Madeleine McCann: Selling Books

welsh-mccann2-150x150 Madeleine McCann: Selling BooksMADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann

Madeleine McCann has become the benchmark for all mention of paedos and missing children in fact and fiction. After Ben Affleck’s film, the press now has books by Irvine Welsh and Catherine O’Flynn to conjure with…

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: “’What Was Lost’ by Catherine O’Flynn: Masterful mystery draws shivers with tale of missing girl”

It is no great surprise that in 2007, when Britain was obsessed with the Madeleine McCann case, a novel about a missing child should resonate with readers there. What Was Lost won Catherine O’Flynn the prestigious Costa First Novel Award and made her the British book trade’s “Newcomer of the Year.”

IRISH HERALD: “Maddie link put Welsh’s new book on hold”

TRAINSPOTTING author Irvine Welsh has revealed that he stopped writing his new book ‘Crime’ after Madeleine McCann went missing because of similarities between the case and the plotline of his story.

The writer said his book nearly didn’t happen because he was unnerved by the coincidence. His book tells the story of Detective Inspector Ray Lennox who goes to Florida to escape from a horrifying child murder case in Scotland.

But while there he ends up trying to save a young girl from a paedophile ring.

“When Madeleine McCann disappeared I just stopped writing ‘Crime’. It just seemed too horrible to go on,” said Welsh.

I’ve written two books with storylines of child-abduction. One especially has seen a bit of a surge in sales this year despite being written in 2003. Did I see the future??

  7. 7 Rasputin Says:

Fact or fiction, that is the undeniable question.

  8. 8 coolandcalm Says:

Rasputin…. definitely fiction but the subject matter was well researched!

Having been away, I am trying to catch up with the news, the woc thing.
    Strange!

I have been interviewing some Portuguese living in France about their feelings about the case ; they said we would never know the truth, for political reasons. They thought Amaral was taken out of the case because he was too near the truth. In the MC couple, they think she is the leader, and he follows. They seem to be sure it was the little girl’s blood that was found under the tiles in the living room. They aren’t specially in the know, but they have kept close links with their country of origine. It was interesting to hear their views. They could have talked about it for hours.

  10. 10 Marie Nicholas Says:

I am trying to understand the quilt and tapestry quotes in the other thread, by Ferdinand and Coolandcalm. Are they implying that they are in the know? Or is it me misunderstanding?

So, there are people in the know - apart from the family who might also be in the know. The question is, in what know are they?
