Madeleine McCann: Do Libel Laws Damage The Investigation?
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann
IN The New Year, a House of Commons inquiry will investigate press standards, privacy and libel laws.
The cross-party Culture, Media and Sport Committee is now looking for views on a wide range of key topics affecting the press from newspaper publishers and any other interested parties.
The case of missing Madeleine McCann will be high on the agenda.
The Committee will ask why the self-regulatory regime was not used in this case after libel payouts were made to the girls parents, their friends and Robert Murat. All innocent.
The Committee also wants to know why the PCC has not invoked its own inquiry and whether the successful action against Express Newspapers by the McCanns indicates a serious weakness with the self-regulatory regime.
What is the job of the press? And do libel laws prevent a full and frank discussion and an open investigation?
Madeleine McCann: no suspects; no crime; no sign of the missing child…

November 22nd, 2008 at 9:44 am
Sorry Garth , you allegedly coughed, its an epidemic now, not birdflu?
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:02 pm
It could be bird flu, the pigeon(s) aren’t here, perhaps they’ve been took?
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Bty bird flu that is, no-one would abduct nice friendly pretty pigeons would they?
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:31 pm
There is absolutely no evidence of an epidemic - the bird is 103% innocent.
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Oh Gods its Garth-flu then - arrghhh
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
There is no evidence, absolutely NO evidence that Garthflu exists. Is there a doctor in the house to tell us the truth about bird flu and about what happened to the pigeon(s)?
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Well, I do hope the pigeons are not cooped up somewhere…
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Chenier it’s cold out there today, pigeons should be tucked up in their warm doocots, specially if they’ve got bird flu. I wonder who’s serching for them? Perhaps we should establish a fund and get good media coverage, what do you think?

Afternoon my lovelies. My ears were burning then
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
We were a bit worried your poor little frozen corpse had crashed from the skies; it’s a bit chilly round here…
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Don’t worry i’m well ruffled up and i’ve got a scarf on
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Hi Lone, glad you haven’t got bird flu, but then again, are you your brother’s keeper? What about FSBFP?
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
As long as it’s not a small tie you should be ok, though it’s probably a good idea to steer clear of any Nigerian taxi drivers…
November 22nd, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Hi Montaillou
As for FSBFP I think he’s at the races having a flutter
No bird flu around here. I’ve got an imense immune system
I hate those pesky Nigerian taxi drivers. Talking of Africa I had the most vivid dream last night that we were at war against Mugabe. It was ugly…
Mum pigeon to be is having lots of Braxtons today!
November 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm

November 22nd, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Can’t be long now Lone, lots of Braxtons eh? Needs lots of tlc, warm nest etc
November 22nd, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Oh I used to love Lego! we had buckets of the stuff and I was really very good. No PC’s then though.
(wish we were at war with Mugabe)
November 22nd, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Lone and C&C
Mugabe has refused a visa for Kofi Annan, Former President Jimmy Carter and Graca Machel to visit Zimbabwe; he can hardly claim he’s afraid of them launching a coup, given their combined ages, so it’s yet another demonstration that things are so bad that he’s desperate to avoid information about it getting out.
Now there’s a war I would support…
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Sadly Mugabe is only the latest in a series of despots who has destroyed his own country, whilst blaming it on everyone else.
Surely there is someone out there man enough to do his duty.
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Two major reasons the big hitters at the UN will not act: Chromium and Uranium.
Both critical to maintain what is incorrectly termed “Western” Civilisation…more important than oil.
Ah! The duplicity of politicians….Zimbabwe and Mugabe have both.
Difficult to get at but “Die Stem van Suid-Afrika” is also in play…. I translate… The call of South Africa. It has the skills needed and is ready and willing.
So is China and has been for almost four decades.
Chinese submarines still patrol the Mozambique Channel across the Straits to Madagascar. They don’t do that for fun and every other government watches exactly what China lands at Beria to support the ageing and, more than slightly, out of phase despot..
Remember Weapons of Mass Destruction and the deep concern over Iraqi links with Harare? Remember it was never mentioned again in polite circles after the invasion. A war and possible invasion of the type Chenier says she would support would probably immediately involve ALL the big hitters and head-on.
Zimbabwe and it’s peoples would be treated as purely secondary.
That is in my uneducated and humble guess, of course.
Some of us shouldn’t be allowed out at night…..

Hi Folks
With the Economy in meltdown, there is no way any Government would spend yet more money sending troops into Zimbabwe. When the Economy returns so some
kind of normalcy, America will not be the largest , probably China. In fact, I
think America will become very protectionist and not mind another Country taking
over.
November 22nd, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Perhaps everyone is hoping that time and tide shall take care of Mugabe, or does he have Heir Apparent in amongst his henchmen?
November 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Garthflu
here a very very very tenuous connection with ‘Garth’ and ‘flu’, and given he hasn’t been back since his ‘ahem’ this a.m

The other African states could cut off supplies, and the old power bases in the west could apply sanctions in the same way that sanctions were applied to Ian Smith’s regime. Mugabe claims that sanctions worked to bring Smith down; there would be a symmetry in applying them to Mugabe’s regime.
China will rule the world because China will own the world, but any realistic appraisal of the way that China will rule depends on our knowledge of what China does now.
Beijing has for some years allowed a remarkable degree of autonomy to businesses in places like Shanghai; Beijing may pass laws but it doesn’t necessarily enforce them if it would damage the economic base.
If we believe the CIA then China receives only 5.4% of Zimbabwe’s exports, and provides only 8.3% of its imports. That doesn’t look to me as if China would care too much if Mugabe got the chop…

I”m off to the States on Wednesday for 10 days and a few Senators and Political
pundits have been saying that some other Country should take on the Mantle of
policing the World. Of course, we all know the U.S. A. cherry picked those Countries to protect, But I don”t think China wants to dominate the World, they have a massive Labour force which ensures they will always produce cheap goods,
and a Country that has everything.
Barclays Bank in America said the other day that their Board of Directors would not
be taking their Annual Bonus in view iof the current situation. Their CEO was due to
receive $93,000,000.00……….that is truly obscene, no wonder the Banks don”t want to be regulated.
My friend in New Jersy sent me an e-mail recently saying “Whose House is this”?
There were lots of photos of sumptuous rooms just like a Palace, guess who”s it
was, yes President Mugabe!!!!!!!

I think that China hasn’t really got a choice; up to a few weeks ago they weren’t even going to attend the G20 meeting but they have finally concluded that if they are going to bail us out they will have to take the power, if only to ensure that the vast sums of money they are being asked for will be used in a way that doesn’t damage China.
The US hasn’t got the money to fund itself, much less the IMF, so it’s China, Japan and the Gulf States who are being asked to do it.
And in the first time for more than a century relations between Japan and China are thawing; that is a remarkable event which has got very little media coverage. The financial crisis is so vast that people are really, really scared; I am pretty sure that the nuclear option of nationalising banks is under consideration in a lot of countries.
So I doubt that anyone will want to pay for a war just yet, but it took WW2 to enable the US economy to recover; that really is a frightening thought…
