Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann’s ‘Life Sentence’
MADELEINE McCann Watch: In which Our Maddie on on the telly and forgets her name…
Daily Mirror: “KATE AND GERRY: IT’S A LIFE SENTENCE – Hunt for Madeleine will never end”
Well, surely it will end when she is found?
Rod Chaytor has the front-page “exclusive”.
Kate and Gerry McCann are doomed to spend a lifetime hunting for their missing daughter Madeleine, a friend revealed yesterday.
The friend is…
Film director Emma Loach, who spent eight weeks with the couple for a new TV documentary, says they will never give up.
Emma Loach whose work will be broadcast on Channel 4. Does the subject matter influence the PR?
Says Emma:
“This is a life sentence for them. They will never be able to move on and the deep scar will not heal until they have an answer… either Maddy comes home or they know what happened to her.”
So not what the Mirror’s headline said. The hunt will end when the child is found. And as for that “exclusive”? Well, Anorak readers read that yesterday…
Such are the facts.
In other facts, the Mail and Sun hear from Professor David Canter:
The Mail delivers:
Madeleine McCann may have forgotten who she was, claims top criminal expert - Madeleine McCann may not remember who she is two years on from vanishing during a family holiday to Portugal, a British crime expert believes.
More facts?
The British girl, just three when she disappeared, could have a new identity and speak a different language, according to the top criminologist…
‘You could call out Madeleine to her and she wouldn’t respond. She doesn’t remember being that child,’ he said.
Professor Canter said Maddie could be anywhere in the world, speaking a different language and looking completely different to how we know her.
We’ve heard from Professor Canter before:
DAILY MAIL front page: “Five top British crime experts went to Portugal to examine the Maddie case. What is their verdict…?”
A verdict? No body. No arrest made. No court case. Just a verdict. And from “crime experts”…
Pages 18 and 19: “THE MADDIE FILES – Five of Britain’s top crime experts were sent to Portugal to give their verdicts on the McCann case. Here they reveal their deeply disturbing conclusions…”
Who sent these sleuths? The British police? Richard Branson? The Pope? No – Channel 4’s Dispatches. The Madeleine McCann mystery is a media circus, so what more fitting than the TV as a courtroom and arbiter of justice?
The Mail’s Roger Graef presides. He says that under Portuguese law, the age of consent is 13 (“between couples of the same age”). It’s not, yer honour. It is 14. “Portugal has many more paedophiles than it cares to admit.” How many? We do not know. It pains Graef to divulge the hideous details. But there have been two cases of child abduction in the past 15 years over there
The crackers are THE CRIMINAL PROFILER (David Canter), THE SEARCH EXPERT (Gary Lig), THE FORENSIC ANALYST (David Barclay), THE SOHAM DETECTIVE (Chris Stevenson) and THE MEDIA HANDLER (Matt Tapp).
They unearth no new clues, no new evidence, no new ideas. But they get to be on the telly and in the papers. And then they return to the UK to crack other cases, like the murder of Rhys Jones, the whereabouts of Suzy Lamplugh, the capture of Osama bin Laden, the wheabout of the UK’s most wanted Paul Bures “wanted in relation to multiple charges of Rape and Sexual assault on male children aged 13-16 years. He currently resides in Spain”) and…
Madeleine McCann is missing - but if you wait long enough the story will roll around again…
Two years of news here.

They really are trapped. They have to keep up the pretence of believing that MM is alive, or not only does the whole edifice of their non-involvement in her death come crashing down, but the Fund will be shown to have been a cynical ploy from the start.
So they have to keep on making these statements, and diverting the attention of people who should be thinking more clearly and critically about the affair”.

Gerry - bless his heart - is hilarilous… but in Britain ‘a bit of a joke’ doesn’t mean funny - it means they’re a laughingstock, a farce, not to be taken seriously… like our politicians… eg. Gerry talking about the ‘wider agenda’ within a few weeks of her going missing… not to mention the presidential-like world tour, the Edinburgh Festival appearance, the relentless claims that she’s alive and with a family…
I don’t have any kids… but I’ve never even left my dog alone in an unlocked apartment… and if I did I’d be too hysterical to make excuses for myself… which despite their shock they were quick enough to tell us it was just like being at the bottom of their garden… oh, and the window was jemmied open… aparently…

“They can’t even let it fade away and retreat to quiet obscurity as parents grieving for a dead child.”
Digging to the bottom of the barrel, Petermac, to get your conviction! How many missing children’s cases did you work on as an investigator? The McCanns and every parent whose child is missing don’t “retreat to to quiet obscurity as parents grieving for a dead child”; as when your child is missing and no body found there is that contant hope that your child is alive out there somewhere and you never stop your search. You don’t grieve for a ‘dead child’, you grieve for your missing child and move heaven and hell to find them.
Prove she was abucted? Even those first jokes for boys in blue couldn’t prove there was an abduction or wasn’t an abduction. If you were an investigator, as you claim to be, then you know full well that abductors of small children don’t leave ‘calling cards.’ Where is your proof she wasn’t abducted?
Where is your proof the Fund was a cynical ploy?

So they have to keep on making these statements, and diverting the attention of people who should be thinking more clearly and critically about the affair.
And there is no way they can ever stop.
They can’t even let it fade away and retreat to quiet obscurity as parents grieving for a dead child.
This will go on for years, and one day one of the group will say something which gives the game away.
Or KM could tell the police the evidence she has that there was an abduction.
Now there’s a thought !

Karen, you are finding any part of this ongoing tragedy ‘a bit of a joke’? A child is missing; her parents are going to any lengths to try and find her, including putting themselves, once again, in the public spotlight desperate for help from anyone who may know what has happened to her or have information. No doubt they were fully aware that by going on TV there are those still out there who will use this against them to twist their reasons for appearing on nationwide TV and really international TV.
I’m curious, Karen, any of your children ever been missing (if you have any)? How articulate, clear thinking, able to speak every thought in your mind without it coming out all jumbled do you think you would be in the state of shock of finding them missing?
May 5th, 2009 at 1:33 am
I know the situation is terrible, they’re probably feeling bad… but how can they not crack you up??? They say the most stupid things… one of my favs. being Gerry’s musings about the twins not waking up… it made him wonder if they had been drugged… wonder? He’s a bleedin’ doctor! Why wasn’t he checking them anyway - since right from the start they were convinced they’d been in the same room as an abductor?
I feel sorry for MM - but her parents are a bit of a joke.

Hi again,
Yes, I agree papers have to be very careful what they say but this article is much warmer than it need be just to avoid problems of that sort. As I said, it may be genuine or simply reflect what the papers now know the public wants, as well as the caution you mention.
I’ll be watching Oprah of course. She has a huge following here and great respect, although I myself have only seen snatches of her shows. Sadly, I think it’s unlikely that there will be the response they want but stranger things have happened. I hope I’m wrong, for their sake, but I have to say I think it’s more likely some info may turn up by accident in years to come. And in some cases, eg. Ben Needham, nothing at all ever comes to light….though that case isn’t actually over as such, of course. No case ever is really, unless and until a clear solution emerges.
At least she seems to have given them support and understanding.
Your last sentence is intriguing….I can make a couple of guesses!
All the best. Until today, I’ve only posted once since last summer. I don’t really want to get involved again but it was lovely to see you again today…and still talking common sense! And Stig too.
Bye for now.

Maria, nice to see you again. Trust all has been well with you! To be honest, I have read the latest in the newspapers over there but…rather cynical part of me figures what else would they write considering monies paid in the past …What is interesting is to listen and watch them talk and hear directly from them what they have to say, not to have to depend on some newspaper to report their version of what the McCanns said. Agree many people would never have left their children unsupervised but, as you know and said, many have in the past. However, some people prefer to overlook those people who have left their children alone in their rush to judgment of the McCanns.
No parent whose child is missing ever gives up looking for them. Kate McCann confirmed to me what I always suspected why their hope or belief there daughter is still alive when she said about other cases of missing children being found alive. She also made another statement, which was so glaringly obvious back then, that when they were told they were suspects she knew they were not looking for her daughter.
There is one other person I would give anything to watch Oprah question them …

Hi Cheryl!
Read the Daily Mail article I posted. It’s very fair and the journo expresses real regret for ever having publicly doubted the Mcs and great admiration for their sheer determination to keep going and maintain the search, especially in the face of the vilification they once suffered. The article may be very genuine, but even if you take the more cynical view that the Mail just panders to public opinion, it reflects the fact that the public IS overwhelmingly sympathetic to the Mcs……here in the UK as well as on the other side of the pond!
People here also know very well that countless parents have used arrangements similar to those made the Mcs. Stig’s post is very interesting. Of course, many parents would never have left their children, even for short periods of time. Many would never have used room-listening services, or arranged their own, as the Mcs and friends did, but very many others have certainly done just that. That’s the very reason why so many parents were horribly shocked on the 4th May 2007, in a “There but for the grace of God…..” way.
The Mcs’ failure to provide the correct, unbroken supervision for their children on that tragic night will haunt them forever. However, it doesn’t let them off the hook in terms of their duty to her now. In that respect they have NOT been found wanting; it seems they will not give up the search while they remain ignorant of what happened to their daughter.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
Real Stig and Dr Eggman, watch the Oprah show, since I understand it will be shown in Europe tomorrow. Hopefully, it will make many hang their heads in shame but others will still prefer to believe every negative story written in the newspapers, ‘evidence’ manufactured against them in people’s minds on internet sites. As Oprah said to them “the newspapers have villifed you …”
Damn shame they had to come to the US to get a ‘fair hearing’, isn’t it!
May 4th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Bob, you are getting a bit carried away there.
Are you aware of the ‘Room Listening Service’ that Mark Warner resorts used to offer - until this incident - at some of their other resorts? The same sort of service was in use in Butlins camps in the UK for decades. How come it was never questioned and labeled neglect?
“Room listening service
Each evening our nannies tour the rooms to check on your children so that you can relax over dinner. This free listening service is available between 8pm and 12 midnight at all our resorts (except Pedras D’el Rei, Portugal where we offer a drop-in evening creche service) to all children under the age of 13 years.”
May 4th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
She could be ‘brain washed’ over the year(s) but deep in her unconsciousness her memories remain and will resurface one day. Her parents will spend their lifetime looking for their daughter, as all parents do whose children are missing!
Bob, this is not to condone in the slightest the McCanns leaving their wee ones alone, but thousands of parents do it but most don’t pay the ultimate price that the McCann’s have paid. They are now living in a hell that every parent lives in whose child has gone missing, why punish them further by taking away the other two or putting them in prison? That is the ultimate punishment!
Percy, Police don’t charge someone with a crime if that person honestly thinks a report they give is being helpful in solving a crime. Too many questions in my mind, Percy, as to the way that case was handled from the first night that young child went missing until some months later and really by then I think it was too late.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Bob, can understand your frustration. Even those of us who remain “pro” McCann wonder at how they could be so stupid, but I think that’s all it was. Sheer stupidity. People somehow feel “safe” on holiday. How many times have you been abroad and heard someone has been robbed within hours of getting there. I’ve heard it every damn’ time I’ve been away. And kids go missing every day because their parents let them roam the streets. I was involved in a search for a six year old on my local estate who was allowed to walk to his mate’s house but disappeared (he’d gone to a different mate’s house) These people are far, far worse. As wrong as it was, at least there was a degree of supervision with the McCanns et al. I guess they can’t serve at Her Maj’s request because her jurisdiction doesn’t reach to Portugal, but I guess you just mean why aren’t they banged up?
May 4th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Of course the McCans feel guilty. And so they should; the neglected her when they were out getting pissed. They will live with that moment for every single day of their lives. The moment they chose themselves over their daughter.
But their are still questions that have to be answered. Why haven’t social services taken the other two kids away from these clearly abusive parents? And why aren’t they both now incarcirated under her majesty’s pleasure for the crimes they have commited?

…but be careful..because you will probably be the one being arrested for peering like a perv at some other parents little princess…and remember…..wasting police time is also a crime.
May 4th, 2009 at 11:40 am
…and don’t worry if the little girl you are looking at is not blonde …or look like her…or speak English…or know her own name is Madeleine…..if she looks suspicious…it could be her…….you can never be too careful when it comes to kids…they can be cunning…so call the cops.
May 4th, 2009 at 11:23 am
….still no sight of Madeleine….but give it time and someone is going to believe they have seen a blonde girl somewhere….just wait till the summer holidays…it’s bound to happen.
