MADELEINE McCann Watch: Having re-established Our Maddie as a lead news story, the Daily Express delivers a front-page headline to match anything that has passed as news before:

The key to solving Madeleine McCann’s disappearance may lie within 500 yards of her family’s ­holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, investigators believe.

May. Believe. Facts. And which investigators?

The breakthrough comes after a series of new leads received by private detectives working for Kate and Gerry McCann.

What breakthrough? The tunnels?

And what about Raymond Hewlett, - yet to be interviewed by the McCanns posse? The man who on the word of tourists caused the Mail to label him “Maddie’s Paedo”?

The hunt for the missing youngster has dramatically switched back to Portugal, where investigators last night said they were focusing their probe on a predatory paedophile still living in the area.

What’s their name, then? Scarface? Moon Man? If the name is that of a known paedo, they must have been convicted. So what’s their name? We know Hewlett’s name, so why not this peado’s?

A source close to the investigation said: “All the evidence points to Praia da Luz, not Morocco or Spain or elsewhere. We think the answer to Madeleine’s disappearance lies within 500 yards of the holiday apartment.”

What evidence? Armchair detectives demand more.

They say there is no evidence that a vehicle was used in the abduction, shortly before her fourth birthday, or that she was spirited away out to sea.

What evidence? Well, no evidence of that. Shall we look at some more “no evidence”?

The source said: “Of the four new leads, there is one we are particularly interested in.”

Raymond Hewlett, who says he is innocent?

The detectives identified a suspicious man who was in Praia da Luz at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance and is still living there.

No. Not Raymond Hewlett. No morphine-laced confession from cancer patient Hewlett. So someone else.

The source said: “He is one of a handful of men we are looking at. There are a couple in Praia da Luz and two elsewhere on the Algarve. All but one are British.”

Adding:

The source said: “We are looking at a man. He is of significant interest.”

Yes, looking for a man. Wasn’t that what the Metodo 3 were doing? Although - and get this – aren’t we all looking for a little girl?

Former British police detectives David Edgar and Arthur Cowley recently returned from the Algarve and Germany after interviewing a series of witnesses.

Any news?

Edgar and Cowley were hired by the McCanns to pick up the pieces of the investigation after Spanish agency Metodo 3 failed to find the missing youngster, now aged six.

Edgar and Cowley are The Professionals.

Ex-Detective Inspector Dave Edgar said: “The only people capable of running an investigation like this are those trained as an SIO – Senior Investigating Officer.”

It’s all a matter of rank. If only the McCanns could get or afford a retired Chief Superintendent. Is Ian Blair free?

Edgar and his colleague, ex-Detective Sergeant Arthur Cowley, receive up to 200 inquiries every day from people claiming to have new evidence.

And they check every caller? Is that possible? Can every lead be followed up? What about hoaxers and loons and those who just want to be involved?

An anonymous tip-off/ hunch should be followed up?

Remember the letter to a Dutch newspaper? And a map showing where her body can be found? It was credible. And what about her, she who saw Our Maddie in Morocco? And the “hoax“? And this hoax? And tabloid journalists pointing the finger at innocent men?

A source close to the investigation said: “There are 38 known sex offenders in the Algarve. There have been seven sexual assaults involving the children of tourists in the Praia da Luz area in the past four years. They all have the same modus operandi as Madeleine’s abduction.

“There were attacks on children involving burgling a property and indecent assaults on the kids. Five happened before Madeleine’s abduction, two happened afterwards. One took place a month before Madeleine vanished.”

Was the McCanns’ flat robbed? Were any of the other children molested?

Madeleine McCann is missing – and the speculation remains rife…
