It’s the Third Summer of Our Maddie, and the Sunday Express senses hope in news that a child, now aged 8, has been found in Panama?
“New hope for girl as McCann kidnap girl returns after 6 years.”
People can come back. But is the link to Our Maddie relevant or just a cynical ploy to spin the story and create front-page sensation?
The eight-year-old girl in Ecuador is believed to be a Panamanian kidnap victim who was taken from her home as an 18-month-old baby in 2003 by Ecuadorean woman Maria del Carmen Medina, who then registered the child as her own daughter.
She is Panama’s Our Maddie. Typhaine Taton is France’s Our Maddie.

In this case, Medina later moved to Spain and left the girl with her sister. Police found the child following a tip off form a person in Madrid.
This news is said to give hope to Gerry and Kate McCann they may yet be reunited with their missing daughter. As surely it must. But the Express’s question is specific:
“Will Maddy now be found?”

I STILL THINK THE MCCANN`S HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE, WHY AREN`T ONE OF THEM WITH THE INVESTIGATROS LOOKING FOR MADDIE, THEY ARE JUST SITTING IN THEIR CHAIRS WITH THE HANDS BEHIND THEIR HEADS RELAXING AND SOMEONE ELSE HAS GOT TO DO THE WORK FOR THEM. I THINK WHEN THE ABDUcTORS HEAR OR SEE THAT THEY ( 2 MCCANN`S ) ARE ACTUALLY THERE AND HELPING WITH EVERTHING THEY WILL LET MADDIE GO BECAUSE NOW THEY DON`T EVEN SHOW THEY ARE WALKING THE STREETS OF SPAIN OR MOROCCO or ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD THEMSELVES, IT IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE. THEY SHOULD GO OUT AND DO IT THEMSELVES AND THEN GOD WILL START LISTENING !!!

Thank you for your comments. It is a fact that if parents are found to be neglectful it has happened in the past but just did not come to anyone’s attention until something happens. It is similar to domestic violence which can be going on unnoticed - it is only when the spouse is seriously injured or killed that the abuse comes to light and the authorities move in. Also there is evidence that this was an ongoing thing as there were reports of the children crying for their parents before that tragic night. Unfortunately they were in a foreign country in a vacation resort where they got away with it “almost”. Under the laws of Portugal they could have been charged with child neglect and the other two children removed and is that not why they hightailed it out of there pdq after being made arguidos. The McCanns in my opinion are doing a great cover up job. The best defence is offence but I as a parent and I am sure most would agree that if one of my children disappeared I could never leave the others alone for a minute and flying off to sit on an Oprah Winfrey interview would be the furthest thing from my mind unless I was trying very hard to convince others of my “innocence”

WOMAN CONFESSES TO NABBING BABY MICHAELA
After a gruelling two-year police investigation, a 25-year-old
woman has confessed that she stole baby Micaela Hunter from her
natural mother, police spokesman Eugene Opperman said on Friday.
Michaela, now two-years-old, was stolen when she was just one day
old from her mother Allison Hunter at Marymount Hospital on May 4,
1994, allegedly by a woman who miscarried at another Kempton Park
hospital.
After the woman was arrested, the child was given back to her
natural parents Allison and Bruce Hunter.
“Obviously they are very happy,” Opperman said.
On Wednesday the woman’s boyfriend handed Micaela to Benoni
police because he suspected the girl was not his girlfriend’s
child. Police arrested the woman on Thursday in Kempton Park.
The baby, described as a “beautiful child with curly blonde
hair and blue eyes”, was found unharmed and in good condition.
“After she (the suspect) spilled the beans she felt very
relieved and happy,” investigating officer Capt Hutch Hutcheons
told reporters at a Johannesburg news conference.
“She wanted to give the child back to her parents but didn’t
know how,” he added.
The woman is to appear in court on Friday. Police said they
would seek a court order prohibiting photographers from taking her
picture because the investigation was still pending.
Opperman said although police were sure that the child was
Micaela Hunter, the suspect still had to be subjected to an
identity parade and DNA tests had to be conducted on Micaela, the
suspect and Mrs Hunter.
There was no indication that the Hunters knew the woman.
Opperman said the woman could spend anywhere from six months in
prison to 15 years, depending on the magistrate’s discretion.
Her boyfriend, according to Hutcheons, was lured into the
alleged crime under “false pretenses” and would not be prosecuted.
Responding to criticism that the police investigation into the
kidnapping had failed, Hutcheons said they had questioned couples
applying for adoption and women who were in Marymount at the time,
but in the end they had depended on the public for information.
“In the future, we can just go and speak to and give lectures
to hospital personnel to take more precautions so this doesn’t
happen again,” Hutcheons said, adding that the case had prompted
stepped-up security in hospitals around the country.
According to a Johannesburg newspaper, the woman’s boyfriend
realised that Micaela was not his girlfriend’s when he tried to
adopt the child and could not get a birth certificate for her.
Opperman refused to elaborate but said, “it was realised
through an argument” that the baby was Micaela.

Veronica, you’re right, of course, but why would they have done that? There’s no evidence to suggest that MM and her siblings were neglected, so far as I know, before the events of May 2007. But I take your point.

South African has also a case…it happened in the late 1980’s… she was kidnapped as a newborn baby and found a few years later..I think about 3-4 years later. Her name was Michaela.

Well here’s the thing….. If Social Workers had of removed Madeleine McCann from her parents for negligence she would most likely be alive and well today. This is not a figment of my imagination or a cheap shot at anybody it is simply the truth.
I respect and applaud the work the social workers who have to do what they think is the right thing under terrible conditions and duress. And it appears that no matter what they do it is never the right thing.

I couldn’t agree more about the Mail! Social workers can’t win. Ironic, in the light of recent high-profile cases, that they’re now being demonised for being over-zealous in taking children away from their parents.
And, of course, whatever the case, we never know all the facts, and certainly won’t be given them by the press!
Mistakes happen. Social workers have workloads which are scandalously heavy and, by the way, are not paid accordingly. Hope the Mail will lead the campaign to get them better salaries for the vital work they do.

The Express and the Mail were always alternatives to each other but now the Express is absolutely downmarket and often economical with the truth for sensationalist reasons and the Mail is rampaging ahead on a v. right wing agenda with a thing about Social Workers.
‘How dare they take that baby away from its parents?’
‘How dare they leave that baby with its parents?’ .
Sad really, because a light tabloid NEWSpaper is a good thing for those with not enough time to plough thru the braodsheets.

I feel sorry for the Express, a newspaper that will surely fold sooner or later (excuse the pun). Readers of Private Eye will know how bad things are alleged to be at that place under the current ownership.
