Burying Bad News

‘IT’S a good day to bury Stephen Byers.

‘They come here to bury me’

No! No! No! That’s not what we meant. Mr Byers, the former Transport Secretary, is alive and kicking; to bury him before he’s passed away would be most likely illegal and certainly morally reprehensible, assuming, of course, that he is a mere mortal.

No, we meant it is a good day to bury the story that Byers is in the High Court, where he’s answering the allegation levelled by 49,000 Railtrack shareholders that he and the Government are guilty of “misfeasance in public office”.

As the Times says, Byers and the Government are also

accused of having breached shareholders’ human rights “by killing off the company and expropriating the assets of Railtrack”.

My Byers denies any wrongdoing, telling the court that the allegations are “without foundation in fact and are simply wrong”.

Like all politicians, Byers will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help him God, Tony, Jo Moore, etc etc. etc.

This is a big news story, and on another given day the tale of how the Government is being sued in the biggest class action this country has ever seen would be front-page news.

Only something else has taken precedence. Which means Byers is on page 24. Buried…’
