Voyage Of Discovery

sts85discovery Voyage Of Discovery‘AMID all the American bashing, the Telegraph reminds those of us that need to be reminded that the USA possesses that rare ability to truly inspire.

‘Did you cancel the papers?’

The paper’s front-page picture of the Discovery space shuttle blasting off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, yesterday is a great photograph of a wonderful event.

It was, as the paper says, the first shuttle flight since the Columbia rocket fell to bits on re-entering Earth’s atmosphere two years ago, killing seven astronauts.

Inside the paper, there are more shots of the take off, and a picture of the shuttle crew heading for the launch pad.

Looking at it, it’s hard not to feel a little envious as Commander Eileen Collins leads five Americans, one Japanese and an Australian onto the space ship.

To fly in space is the stuff of dreams.

We are not often given over to upbeat emotions, but there are few things more sensational than watching a rocket take off for space.

We should celebrate it and the people who make it happen…’
