Spotting The Difference Between AIDS And Hipster Fashion In New York

hipster Spotting The Difference Between AIDS And Hipster Fashion In New YorkHOW can you spot a genuine hipster from a non-genuine hipster, a square or an Aids victim?

Very tricky we know. But Lisa Pryor, writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, knows how.

Think hard. Is someone close to you at risk of being considered a hipster? An art student riding an old Malvern Star along Bourke Street while wearing skinny jeans, a khaki anorak and heavy-framed glasses with massive lenses could almost certainly be diagnosed as one.

Sounds like an AIDS victim. No?

A guy who wears a $2 second-hand flannelette shirt while typing out plot points for a short film he describes as “edgy” on a $2000 laptop in a cafe on Abercrombie Street, is an open-and-shut case.

Open. Shut. Move on.

Hipsters are hard to describe because they are so full of contradictions. But like a toupee or AIDS-related wasting, you know it when you see it.

Unless, you’re wearing the toupee or have a fatal disease, in which case you try to be cool and ignore it…
