Here are the Top Ten April Fool’s Joke Fails. Note: The jokes hereunder were misunderstood at the time and many people took them to be fact. Only now can we laugh.
1318 - Berwick-upon-Tweed is captured by the Scottish from the English. No-one notices. The joke is played out throughout history, with dull days livened up by locals being English the one minute then Scottish the next. In 1977, delirious locals celebrating Scotland’s 2-1 win at Wembley are “invaded” and moments later outraged that Scots hooligans have swamped the sacred English pitch.
