Tim Worstall On The Tax Credit Mess

TIM looks at tax credit, which are all but impossible to fathom:

It might just be simpler to raise the personal tax allowance, wouldn’t it? So that we’re not taxing and subsidising the very same people, with the bureaucracy taking its chunk on the way around?

    Don’t be silly.

That would require the Chancellor to leave out the bit about ordinary people and how he’s going to help them in each and every Budget from now until Doomsday.

    Budgets are boring.

They are only interesting to people who know what they are actually about and, since there are very few people who know what they are about, politicians inevitably succumb to the desire to make them interesting.

    And relevant.

And important to you, the voter!

I am applying for an allowance for the wear and tear to my nails filing down 50p pieces.

This is clearly wholly and exclusively for the purposes of my profession as a freelance commentator on other people’s blogs, and the Chancellor should waste no time in introducing measures to encourage the people’s journalism.

    This is democracy at work…

Seeing as how we are not bringing back National Service just yet and we don’t need the cannon-fodder until Iran- Koreagate - why the fuck are we continuing to finance other people’s kids?

I have never been in the privileged position where I had enough money to be able to rear children.

Yet I have to keep every other fuckers - just in case there’s a War!

Widows and widowers should get much more money than they are currently getting paid and the people who need to claim tax-credit should be given legal aid to batter their partners into submission; to train up for better-paid work or sent on courses to learn how to stop fucking breeding.

My Mother’s side of the family were Catholic so I know what I’m talking about.

Alternatively - people should be allowed to sell surplus children to childless couples.

I would draw the line at selling children as slaves - unless they are over 14yrs old and wear hoodies and have few prospects.
