Why It Pays To Leave The Lights, Gadgets And TV On

electricity meter picture 150x150 Why It Pays To Leave The Lights, Gadgets And TV OnDID you know that “Britons Waste $1.5 Billion Leaving Appliances on”.

Bloomberg has the figures, it has down the maths.

Britons waste 900 million pounds ($1.5 billion) a year by leaving lights, televisions and other electrical appliances switched on when they’re not needed, a study for the U.K. Energy Saving Trust found.

Such are the facts.

“It’s hard to believe that in the current economic climate we’re effectively dreaming away this kind of cash,” the trust’s chief executive, Philip Sellwood, said in the statement.

Hard to believe. It’s lot of cash, and here’s the breakdown.

  • There are 60million Britons living in the country
  • There are 365 days in a year.
  • That’s $25 per Briton per year.
  • That’s £15.50 a year.
  • That’s 4.2 pence a day.

A fortune? No. But is it worth turning the lights and the TV off?

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) states that in 2006 the average income for a woman was £20,488 and the average income for a man was £25,896.

  • Taking the mean, that’s an average wage of £23,192.
  • If Mr Norm works for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, he earns £64 a day.
  • If turning off the lights, gadgets and TV takes 5 minutes, it costs 22p to turn them all off.

Which means you’re 500% better off leaving the TV on standby and the lights on…
