Prince Buster Sings The Bernard Madoff Musical
BERNARDÂ Madoff has been sentenced to 150 years in prison. Madoff is to be a musical.
Take him away, Prince Buster and Judge Dread:
Spotter: Cheryl
District Judge Denny Chin issued the maximum sentence to the 71-year-old defendant, who said he sought no forgiveness and knew he must live “with this pain, this torment, for the rest of my life”…
“Here the message must be sent that Mr. Madoff’s crimes were extraordinarily evil and that this kind of manipulation of the system is not just a bloodless crime that takes place on paper, but one instead that takes a staggering toll.”
Hush Up!

isn’t there a sheriff over in the States somewhere who does just that and makes his convicts wear pink….? bring him over here and put him in charge of the justice system and let’s see the job done properly for once.
I am very much of the opinion that if someone is convicted of a serious violent crime like murder or rape, they should lose their human rights immediately, having taken away someone else’s….
I agree with you C&C that 150 years seems like a waste for Madoff, because he is obviously not going to live out his sentence - 20 years would probably have done the trick and you just know that he is not going to suffer any real hardship inside - fed, watered, entertained….
does 150 years make anyone feel any better? maybe, but it smacks of being ill thought out and totally impractical - if he dies in 5 years, does that mean he has got away with it….?

I quite like hard time on a chain gang but sadly if we tried it here it would be against their human rights!

Most of the insulting sentences handed down are over here - perhaps we could rent a jail from the US and dump the longterm shits there….

I definitely wasn’t undermining the crime… if it had been me and my savings I would have wanted his head also or at the very least his body in jail for the rest of his life.
However, when I see sentences (here) for horrendous crimes such as gang-rape and child abuse / murder / battering old ladies to an inch of their lives for a fiver, receiving sentences of LIFE with a mimimum jailtime of errrr five years, I steam. Hence I steam most days!!
It seems to be a worldwide problem. Corporate fraud is on a par with genocide, infanticide is a nuisance.
Give Madoff life by all means but 150 years seems more like judicial grand-standing than punishment. I
Mind you Madoff ripped off a selection of very dodgy people also so I doubt he’ll survive that long anyway!

CoolandCalm, he was charged with violating Federal laws and convicted in a Federal Court. The penalties for violation of Federal Laws can be much more severe than a crime against State Laws. So you really can’t equate what one would get for rape in a state court versus what one gets for commiting a Federal offense. You want to commit a crime, I suggest you make certain it is not a Federal offense before you commit it. Under Federal Guidelines for sentencing there is also a ‘rating’ for the severity of the crime that could lead up to life in prison. I’m trying to remember, I think the ‘off you go for life’ number is in the ’40’s’ ranking - his crimes in total ranked 56 - which was off the board!

He has made a lot of people hoping for a reasonable income completely destitute, and others not much better off

So Bernard ”Madeoff-with-the-cash’ who is 71 is sentenced to 150 years in prison.
Okay, it doesn’t affect me personally, however it always offends me that financial crimes seem to incur far heavier sentences than rape and murder.
We have a skewed view od crime IMO.
