Democrat Says Global Warming Caused Black Hawk Down And Dafur

REP. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) is chairman of the House (Select) Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee.

He tells high school students gathered at the U.S. Capitol that climate change caused Hurricane Katrina and the conflict in Darfur, which led to the “black hawk down” battle between U.S. troops and Somali rebels.

“In Somalia back in 1993, climate change, according to 11 three- and four-star generals, resulted in a drought which led to famine,” said Markey.

Barack Obama’s Poor Phrasing

BARACK Obama, the man who would change the world, is a victim of “poor phrasing”:

Says LGF: “He’s very obviously giving in to the enormous pressure from pro-Palestinian groups.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said on Sunday he used “poor phrasing” in a speech supporting Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel.

“You know, the truth is that this was an example where we had some poor phrasing in the speech. And we immediately tried to correct the interpretation that was given,” he said in an interview aired on Sunday on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria — GPS.”

“The point we were simply making was, is that we don’t want barbed wire running through Jerusalem, similar to the way it was prior to the ‘67 war, that it is possible for us to create a Jerusalem that is cohesive and coherent,” Obama said.

Obama’s campaign has issued similar clarifications since the candidate’s speech to pro-Israel lobby group after he clinched the Democratic presidential nomination early last month.

In the speech, Obama told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee that if elected president in November, he would work for peace with a Palestinian state alongside Israel. “Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided,” the Illinois senator said. Palestinian leaders reacted with anger and dismay.

So what does he mean, if anything?

A Bronx Cheer For David Remnick’s New Yorker Cover

THE New Yorker magazine’s cover portrays Barack Obama wearing a turban and fist bumping his gun-toting wife. The Stars and Stripes burns in the fireplace. A portrait of Osama bin Laden takes pride of place on the mantelpiece.

It’s not a photo. It’s a cartoon. Obama campaign spokesman, Bill Burton, takes a look:

“The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama’s right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive –- and we agree.”

A press release says the artist Barry Blitt “satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign.”

Prime Minister Hands Out Cash In Street

EAT yer dinner and Gordon Brown will pay:

It is a politician’s dream: Handing out cold, hard cash to people on the street as they plead for help. Iraq’s prime minister has been doing just that in recent weeks, doling out Iraqi dinars as an aide trails behind, keeping a tally.

The handouts by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and a handful of other top officials are authorized _ as long as each goes no higher than about $8,000, and the same people don’t get them twice. Aides say they are meant merely to ease the pain a bit, and are motivated by a belief that better conditions will lead to more security.

Ok, not Gordon. Not yet…

Only Two Kevin Ruuds

KEVIN Ruud – pikc ‘n’ tell:

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd is a foul-mouthed politician who launches into expletive-ridden rants in his office when things go wrong, according to the author of an explosive new book…

Dr (Peter) van Onselen (said)….”There are two Kevin Rudds. There is the Kevin Rudd that his staff gets to see and there is the Kevin Rudd that the Australian public voted for – and they are very different… Some of his staff are angered by the hypocrisy of him criticising others who use foul language when he does so himself behind closed doors.

“What’s interesting about this is that it was Mr Rudd who kicked people out of the Labor Party for use of foul language.

“Union boss Dean Mighell was kicked out of Labor by Kevin Rudd because he used foul language…”

News Of Margaret Thatcher’s Death And The End Of Terror

“ULTIMATE HONOUR FOR LADY THATCHER,” announces the Mail on its front page.

What’s it to be? An Audience With Maggie, live on ITV, with the Iron Lady fielding questions from other 1980s stars, like TV’s Dirty Den, radio’s Kid Jensen and laughs with Freddie Starr, culminating in a duet in which Mike Yarwood plays Ronnie Renee-gan to Maggie’s Renato?

Barack Obama’s Bad Speech

JAY looks at Barack Obama’s Bad Speech:

Quote: “Don’t assume that because I don’t agree with you on something that it must be because I’m doing that politically.” Barack Obama, quoted in Reuters.

Figure of Speech: cacosyntheton (cak-o-SIN-the-ton), the bad speech. From the Greek, meaning “badly composed.”

When the silver-tongued Obama speaks badly, it’s news. He shows real discomfort in rebutting liberal accusations that he has flip-flopped on:

  • Iraq (he is slightly backing off his original pledge to withdraw troops),
  • Gun control (he tepidly praised the Supreme court’s recent decision uphold the Second Amendment while ignoring the “well ordered militia” part), and
  • The right to privacy (he supports expanding the feds’ wiretapping authority).

Rod Liddle Thanks David Cameron

ROD Liddle thanks David Cameron for pointing things out:

Good for David Cameron. There was a grotesquely fat woman in front of me in the checkout queue at Sainsbury’s this week, so fat I couldn’t see the car park; she looked like 26 Ethiopians, if you put them in a blender, added some bleach and gelatine and then allowed the result to set for 38 years in the fridge. Her trolley was full of prepackaged brown filth, tramp-semen-flavoured nacho chips, pasta shaped into an approximation of Shami Chakrabarti’s face, smothered in sugar and vinegar and tomato sauce and shoved in a tin, and carbonated sugary drinks that would make Jesus belch. Meanwhile, causing a ruckus by the entrance, was her vile lardy brood, a clutch of under ten E.S.N. thromboses waiting to happen, even the youngest of them with a pierced ear. How did they find a sleeper large enough to get through all that earlobe fat, I wondered — through all that reconstituted crispy chicken nugget and salt and sugar and saturated gunk?

Before David Cameron’s speech in Glasgow East I would simply have shrugged my shoulders, looking at this hag, and maybe sighed — ah, yes, this is Britain. But now he has told these awful people it’s all their own fault that they are hideous, poor and stupid…

Sterilisation by crisps…

Civil Marriage: The Right To Discriminate

DIZZY looks at the Christian registrar who refused to perform same-sex civil partnership unions because she believes that gay marriage is “sinful”. She has won her claim for discrimination:

And so it came to pass that on the seventh day identity politics was shown to be the most absurdly contradictory and inherent upholder of all that it seeked to destroy. If you’re wondering what I’m talking about it’s the news that an orthodox christian registrar in Islingtom has has had her claim of discrimination on religious grounds upheld by a tribunal after the council said she could not refuse to carry out same-sex civil partnership because she considered them sinful.

The gay rights movement is inevitably outraged by this. Outrages Peter Tatchell that it was not a victory for religious liberty but a ‘victory for the right to discriminate’. Meanwhile Stonewall’s head says that because the women is public servant she can’t choose what public services she will do. Thus we now have two distinct identity groups claiming discrimination and each wanting to discriminate. Whoever had won the other side would be claiming the right to discriminate had been upheld for the winner.

What makes no sense is how nobody seems to be able to see this absurdity or dares to question it. What has happened to this country?

So very, well, Christian of her…

Andrew Gold On The Beatification Of Nelson Mandela:

ALAN Gold on the beatification of Nelson Mandela:

Since he stepped down from the leadership of a nation with rising tides of crime and infection, his legacy can be divided between the man who ended white racist rule and the failed leader who left South Africa far worse off than when he was elected.

Yet he is still elevated to near sainthood by a largely unquestioning West… Because of the reverence in which he is held, few in the media ask him why it is that he has made a profession of befriending and supporting those dictators who are the declared enemies of the West.

During his time as president, Mandela was a strong supporter of Uganda’s insane dictator Idi Amin, of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, of Hafez al-Assad of Syria, of Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, of Fidel Castro of Cuba, of the theocratic leaders of Iran, and many other dictators. This may be viewed as guilt by association, but when he became president and apartheid was demolished as an instrument of government, Mandela rarely publicly acknowledged that it was the sanctions and disinvestment by Western governments and corporations, and the voices of men and women of conscience in the West, who had been largely responsible for the overthrow of white rule.

Yet despite his nation’s debt to America, Europe and nations that went out of their way to oppose apartheid, Mandela has been hugely critical of the West, associating instead with its enemies.

Celebs form an orderly queue…

Toyota Employee Worked To Death

A SENIOR car engineer at Toyota died from working too many hours. He succumbed to ischemic heart disease in January 2006.

The 45-year-old man was developing a hybrid version of Toyota’s successful Camry line at the time of his death. A victim of global warming?

In the two months leading up to his death, the man averaged more than 80 hours of overtime per month, his wife’s lawyers said. Workers in Japan often put in very long hours and “sudden death from overwork” is referred to as karoshi.

John Prescott, non-hybrid Jaguar driver, is 70.

Gordon Brown Heathcliff

GORDON Brown is Heathcliff – Don’t come home:

However, in the interview, Mr Brown says it is “absolutely correct” for people to compare him to Heathcliff. He then adds: “Well, maybe an older Heathcliff, a wiser Heathcliff.” Many MPs were openly questioning last night whether Mr Brown could have even read the book to make such a comparison.

Andrew McCarthy, the acting director of the Bronte Parsonage Museum in Yorkshire, told The Daily Telegraph: “Heathcliff is a man prone to domestic violence, kidnapping, possibly murder, and digging up his dead lover. He is moody and unkind to animals. Is this really a good role model for a prime minister?”

MyLifeMyId.Org Is

A NEW site by Jacqui Smith:

Fresh from its success in selling ID cards to the aviation industry, the Home Office has moved straight on to young people with a ‘have your say’ online forum, mylifemyid.org. The site is fronted by a video of Home Secretary Jacqui Smith getting down with the yoof of Shooters Hill College.

Or at least it was – the site went down for “maintenance” before we got as far as the end of that paragraph. But from memory, we can tell you that the initial response from users has been positive, with comments ranging from (we paraphrase slightly) ‘how can we stop this nightmare scheme’, through ‘you’re going to spin the results of the survey anyway’, to ‘patronising guff.’

The Yoof are all right…

George Bush Thinks Climate Change Is A Joke, So Does India

GEORGE Bush’s parting remarks as he left the G8 food fest in Japan:

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.”

He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

Meanwhile:

India issued its National Action Plan on Climate Change in June 2008 disputing man-made global warming fears and declared the country of one billion people had no intention of stopping its energy growth or cutting back its CO2 emissions …

The report declared: “No firm link between the documented [climate] changes described below and warming due to anthropogenic climate change has yet been established.”

The report made clear that India has no plans to cut back energy usage. “It is obvious that India needs to substantially increase its per capita energy consumption to provide a minimally acceptable level of wellbeing to its people.”

We’ll miss Bush’s sense of humour…

Barack Obama For Plus Ca Change

BARACK Obama is all about change:

“Iran is a great threat. We have to make sure we are working with our allies to apply tightened pressure on Iran… I think what this underscores is the need for us to create a kind of policy that is putting the burden on Iran to change behaviour, and frankly we just have not been able to do that over the last several years” – Barack Obama

Let’s Bomb Iran!

“I’m convinced that a liberated Iraq will be — will be important for that troubled part of the world. The Iraqi people are plenty capable of governing themselves. Iraq is a sophisticated society. Iraq’s got money. Iraq will provide a place where people can see that the Shia and the Sunni and the Kurds can get along in a federation. Iraq will serve as a catalyst for change, positive change” – George W Bush

What Is Wrong With International Socialism Explained

BLOODY hell:

Where would a socialist be who decided their political attitude to Malcolm X on the basis of his reactionary religious beliefs as a member of the Nation of Islam, to Bob Marley on the basis of his belief in the divinity of that old tyrant Haile Selassie or even to Hugo Chavez on the basis of his self-proclaimed Catholicism and admiration of the pope?

Unfortunately some would-be socialists who have no difficulty grasping this in relation to Chavez or Marley, under the pressure of intense bourgeois propaganda are unable to apply the same approach when the religion in question is Islam.

To put the matter as starkly as possible: from the standpoint of Marxism and international socialism an illiterate, conservative, superstitious Muslim Palestinian peasant who supports Hamas is more progressive than an educated liberal atheist Israeli who supports Zionism (even critically). [My emphasis]

– John Molyneux, writing in International Socialism, a quarterly journal of the Socialist Workers’ Party.

Does anyone believe this stuff?
