In marking the departure of a Royal not strapped to a gun carriage, we now look back over some of the now former King of Spain’s meeting with the young Princes William and Harry as they took the water in Majorca with their mum and dad in 1988, the aforementioned Charles and Princess Diana, currently residing on the fabled Sixth Floor of the Harvey Nichol’s department store in central London.

WHAT are we to make of the news that Prince Charles likened Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler? Charles didn’t make his views known in a public address. He was, as the BBC put it, “privately conversing” in Nova Scotia, Canada, where one day he hopes to be head of State. Charles told a woman whose relations were murdered in the Holocaust: “And now Putin is doing just about the same as Hitler.”

A senior Russian diplomatic source tells the Telegraph:

“We are seeking clarification [from the FCO] at a working level. It’s not clear if it is an official position. The response from Clarence House is it was a private talk. We hope there is nothing behind it. But it is unclear to us: what does it mean? He is the future king, after all… It is very serious. Every family in our country lost someone in that war.”

Over 20millions Russian died in World War 2.

As for it being an official position, what does that mean? Charles has no great power. All he does is talk. All he has are opinions.

Labour party MP Mike Gapes says Charles should be mute. “In constitutional monarchy policy and diplomacy should be conducted by parliament and government. Monarchy should be seen and not heard,” he tweeted.

He can’t speak? Gapes added:

“If you are heir to throne or monarch what you say matters. Normal ‘free speech’ argument not relevant.”

Charles is now a non-human, a thing not allowed human rights.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg does not agree with Gapes:

“I have never been of this view that if you are a member of the royal family somehow you have to enter into some Trappist vow of silence. I think he is entitled to his views. But I don’t know whether those were his views because I just don’t think providing a running commentary on what were private conversations is useful to anybody.”

David Aaronovitch takes a view in the Times:

Hitler’s pretexts for the annexation of the Czech Sudetenland in 1938 and the invasion of Poland in 1939 were similar…On September 1, 1939, Hitler made a speech announcing war with Poland, which began with a long prologue of justification concerning the Free City of Danzig, a city with a large majority of Germans and a Nazi government, and the “corridor” of Polish land that separated it from the Reich. “Danzig was and is a German city! The corridor was German and is German! These regions owe their cultural development exclusively to the German Volk . . . Danzig was torn from us.”

On March 18 this year Mr Putin announced the annexation of Crimea to a selected audience at the Kremlin. In a speech punctuated by standing ovations and TV cutaways to women crying with joy, he began by telling them: “Crimea has always been an inseparable part of Russia. This firm conviction is based on truth and justice and was passed from generation to generation, over time, despite all the dramatic changes our country went through during the entire 20th century.”

It was the Treaty of Versailles that robbed Germany of the corridor and divided its Volk. It was the post-1989 chaos that finally deprived Russia of Crimea. “Millions of people went to bed in one country and awoke in different ones, overnight becoming ethnic minorities in former Union republics,” said the Russian president, “while the Russian nation became one of the biggest, if not the biggest ethnic group in the world to be divided by borders.”

In 1938 and 1939 that claim was made in Germany…

In Crimea and elsewhere in Ukraine, said Mr Putin, “time and time again attempts were made to deprive Russians of their historical memory, even of their language and to subject them to forced assimilation.”

Unsurprisingly, the citizens of Crimea “turned to Russia for help in defending their rights and lives, in preventing the events that were unfolding and are still underway in Kiev, Donetsk, Kharkov and other Ukrainian cities”.

Help was forthcoming because “no honourable great power could calmly tolerate such a state of affairs for long”, as Hitler put it. Or, as Mr Putin said: “Naturally, we could not leave this plea unheeded; we could not abandon Crimea and its residents in distress. This would have been betrayal on our part.”

The Guardian ignores that and simply calls it a “gaffe”.

But it wasn’t. He said what he meant. He made no faux pad. His was not a social blunder. He said what he meant. And it’s a view not entirely unsupported by historical fact.

THE Sun says “CHEEKY restaurant staff cleaned up after a visit from Princes William and Harry — by flogging their dirty dishes.”

So. Plates and glasses touched by the princes’s honeyed lips at Memphis’ Rendevous eatery “started a bidding war to the 100-strong crowd outside.”

Are these fans cloners scraping Royal DNA from Wills’ eggcup and Prince Harry Baseball Cap’s highball glass to create an army of Royal offspring not seen since the Dynasty cast fell off the balcony? Some might be. But one was Londoner Victoria Springall who “won 29-year-old Harry’s coleslaw and barbecue sauce-smeared plate”. She said: “It’s going to be like I’m kissing Harry.”

What’s that like, then? Rendezvous owner John Vergos gives a clue:

“Harry ate his food standing up in about two seconds flat.”

Just like his dad.

And it all, of course, what his mum would have wanted:

These articles – except the bullet-holed diary – were found by police in the possession of Ian Ball, 26, who pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to attempting to kidnap Princess Anne, attempted murder of two police officers and wounding two civilians. The diary belonged to shot PC Michael Hills, with the bullet that pierced it still lodged in his liver. On the table are handcuffs, two pairs of which are locked together to provide leg shackles, keys for the handcuffs, gloves worn by Ball during the incident, six spent rounds, three live rounds and 39 spares for the .22 gun and a .38 Astra with five spent rounds and 19 spares. Date: 22/05/1974

ON March 20, 1974, Princess Anne and her husband Captain Mark Phillips were returning to Buckingham Palace along Pall Mall in their Rolls-Royce, driven by Alexander Callender. Rowena Brassey, the Princess’s Lady-in-waiting, was sitting in the car across from the Princess. Next to her was Anne’s armed bodyguard, Inspector James Wallace Beaton.

He won the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for his part in protecting Princess Anne during the attempted kidnap of Princess Anne by Ian Ball. Date: 05/07/1974

Another car approached. This white Ford Escort forced the Roller to stop by blocking their route. A man got out. He was Ian Ball, 26, an unemployed labourer from north London.

Beaton got of the Rolls.

He had two guns. He fired six shots at the Princess’s car. He shot Beaton on the shoulder.

Ball then rushed to the Rolls. He tried to open the rear door, where Anne was still seated. Anne and Captain Phillips held it shut. Brassey crawled out the other door. Beaton crawled back in. Ball fired. The bullet hit Beaton’s raised hand. Ball shot Beaton again.

Callendar got our the car. He confronted the gunman. Ball shot him in the chest. Ball now managed to prise open the rear door. He grabbed Anne’s arm. Ball addressed her:

“Please, come out. You’ve got to come.”

Phillips took hold of her. The men pulled. Anne’s dress tore.

Among them was tabloid journalist, a former boxer, two chauffeurs and three policemen.

Sun journalist Brian McConnell, 46, was shot in the chest by Ian Ball during the fired by Ian Ball during the attempted kidnap of Princess Anne in Pall Mall. Date: 20/03/1974

PC Michael Hills, 22, heard the shots and attended. He was hit in the stomach. Hills radioed for help.

Ronald Russell, a company cleaning executive, was driving home from work. He saw the commotion. He’d seen Ball shoot Hills. Russell, a 6’4” former boxer, advanced on Ball. Russell would later say:

“I pulled over and heard a lot of banging and smashing which I thought was the general rumpus. But then Ball shot a policeman, and I thought ‘that’s a liberty, he needs sorting’.”

The kidnapping was not going to plan.

A second chauffeur, one Glenmore Martin, now parked his car in front of Ball’s rented car.

Sun journalist John Brian McConnell had been following in a taxi. He got out. He told Ball:

“Don’t be silly, old boy. Put the gun down.”

Ball shot him.

As Ball made once more for the Princess, Russell punched him in the back of the head.

Ball ran around the car towards the princess, she jumped back in with Phillips, shutting the door. Ronald Russell then punched Ball in the face. He said:

“Ball had a gun at her head. I lent in to the car and said ‘come this way Anne, you’ll be safe.’ I pulled her out and held her in front of me. Ball got behind me, and I thought ‘if he shoots me in the back it won’t hurt as much’. I turned and we were face to face. He was pointing a gun at me. I hit him fair and square on the chin. He went down and police were everywhere.”

The place was now swarming with police.

Ball ran.

Soon after attempted kidnap of Princess Anne, police officers search among the daffodils blooming at the side of the Mall.

Ball had rented the escort.

When searched, police found the haul you see in the first photograph above: handcuffs, Valium, a ransom letter addressed to the Queen – he would demand £2 million in £5 notes, the money stuffed into 20 unlocked suitcases and sent by plane to Switzerland.

Smithsonian Mag:

Journalists scrambled to pull together theories on how a mentally ill, unemployed man could have masterminded a well-funded kidnapping attempt on his own. An office clerk told a reporter that the police had traced a typewriter that Ball had rented to write the ransom letter. Papers reported that one line of the letter read “Anne will be shot dead.” Days after the kidnapping attempt, a group calling themselves the Marxist-Leninist Activist Revolutionary Movement sent a letter claiming responsibility to The Times of London. Scotland Yard dismissed any connection between that group and Ian Ball. Others recognized a familiar theme in the reported content of the ransom letter, in which Ball had allegedly stated that he would donate the Queen’s ransom to the National Health Services. One month before, a group identifying as the Symbionese Liberation Army had kidnapped Patricia Hearst. In its communication with the Hearst family, the SLA said that they would return the young woman if her family donated what would amount to millions of dollars of food to hungry Californians.

PC Hills joined the Metropolitan Police ‘A’ Division at Cannon Row last may, straight from training school. Date: 21/03/1974

Ball was tried.

A closed police van, with Ian Ball inside, arrives at Bow Street Court. The unemployed 26-year-old, of no fixed abode, was charged with attempting to murder Princess Anne’s bodyguard, Inspector James Beaton, in Pall Mall.Date: 21/03/1974

Ball told the court:

“I would like to say that I did it because I wished to draw attention to the lack of facilities for treating mental illness under the National Health Service.”

ian ball The Murderous Attempt to Kidnap British Princess Anne In 1974

Ball admitted to attempted murder and kidnapping. He was sentenced to a life term in a mental health facility. He would end up in Broadmoor, the high-security psychiatric hospital.

Ball was prosecuted for the attempted murder of the princess’s detective, and various offences under the Offences Against the Person Act, but he was not, perhaps surprisingly, charged with treason; threatening the life of, or kidnapping, the Sovereign’s daughter with the intent of extorting money from the Royal family is not treasonable in the absence of an actual violation.

Ronald Russell was decorated for valour, the Queen pinned the George Cross medal to him and said:

“The medal is from the Queen of England, the thank you is from Anne’s mother.”

Princess Anne seemed fairly cool, telling Michael Parkinson on his TV chatshow:

“It’s fair to say that if anyone was very intent on wiping one out it would be very easy to do.”

Earlier she had said:

“It was all so infuriating; I kept saying I didn’t want to get out of the car, and I was not going to get out of the car. I nearly lost my temper with him, but I knew that if I did, I should hit him and he would shoot me.”

Ian Ball has neither been heard of not seen. He is non-person.

The reporters said they would help. But Royal aides said they could not because of their ‘inappropriate clothing’.

It’s all a bit crass, no? Is this Royal PR so very different to the political grandstanders rocking up to the flooded in their new wellies?

PRINCE William, needed only an A, B and C in his A-levels to get into Cambridge University Normally the University requires an A* and two As. But the Prince is not normal.

All the pretence that he is – the middle-class accent, calling people “guys” and not “serfs” and showing us pictures of his baby (so very Facebook) are just sops to the saps. The boy’s a toff.

Mary Beard, Cambridge University’s Professor of Classics, says Wills should use the jaunt to mix with the riff-raff, telling the Daily Mail: “I very much hope that he will take the opportunity to meet some of our more ‘ordinary’ students, struggling with making ends meet, worried about careers, future and debt.”

If he wants to meet ordinary, he should have used his actual grades to get the actual course they deserved at Coventry University – “Modern University of the Year 2014″ – rather than the place where his brighter school peers end up for a bit.

One thing we can thank Wills story for: introducing us to Tim Squirrell, a natural sciences student (more nominative determinism), who wrote in the Cambridge University newspaper that many would only “assume that he’s been let in simply because he’s posh and rich”.

Come, come. He’s the Duke of Cambridge. He couldn’t very well go to Oxford, could he?

Wills is, of course, studying agricultural management.

Before The War: Europe’s Royal Family In 1913 http://www.anorak.co.uk/378663/royals/before-the-war-europes-royal-family-in-1913.html/ http://www.anorak.co.uk/378663/royals/before-the-war-europes-royal-family-in-1913.html/#comments Tue, 10 Dec 2013 13:36:31 +0000 http://www.anorak.co.uk/?p=378663 WHAT did the Royal Family look like 100 years ago? 1913 was the year before the war to end wars. Were those halcyon days? No.

Women wanted a better deal. In June 1913 Emily Wilding Davison dashed in front of the king’s horse at the Epsom Derby in the name of women’s suffrage. Four days later she died. One month later, 50,000 women massed in Hyde Park, London organised by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies. They would shot  Herbert Asquith, the Liberal Prime Minister, how many women wanted the right to vote.

Sparks were flying in Europe.Lenin and Trotsky were talking of revolution as they toured Europe. At once point, Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud and Stalin all lived in one corner of Vienna.

Empires were on the wane. Nations were the future. Australia and India wanted to move away from Britain. There was turmoil in Ireland. Workers united to push back the drowning tide of grinding poverty in a strike that would become the Dublin Lockout.

In Wales, the  Tonypandy Riots of 1910 and 1911 saw coal miners battle police over pay and working conditions.Home Secretary Winston Churchill sent in the troops.  In Llanelli, soldiers fired and killed two striking railways workers.

And then war was declared. The General Strike planned for 1914 would wait until 1926. Why did it wait? Why did the civil war in Ireland wait until the war with Germany had been fought. The Ulster Defence Force had been massing German-made weapons to fight the British. These men signed up to the war effort to fight with the British. Suffragettes set about recruiting soldiers to take on German aggression. Was this because Empire now stood for nations standing together to fight German tyranny?

The social mortar of deference was changing. But change was not sudden. Virginia Woolf wrote in her 1924 essay ‘Mr Bennett and Mrs Brown’:

On or about December 1910, human character changed. I am not saying that one went out, as one might into a garden, and there saw that a rose had flowered, or that a hen had laid an egg. The change was not sudden and definite like that. But a change there was, nevertheless; and, since one must be arbitrary, let us date it about the year 1910.

The pre-war world was not a halcyon place. There was violence and rebellion in the air. Europe’s royals were in trouble.

Prince Ernest of Cumberland

PA 14944120 1 Before The War: Europes Royal Family In 1913

Ernest Augustus III (Ernest Augustus Christian George; German: Ernst August Christian Georg; 17 November 1887 – 30 January 1953), reigning Duke of Brunswick (2 November 1913 – 8 November 1918), was a grandson of George V of Hanover, whom the Prussians deposed in 1866. The last reigning monarch of the House of Hanover, Ernest Augustus was a direct descendant of Henry the Lion.

He became the Duke of Brunswick:

* HRH Ernest Augustus William Adolphus George Frederick, 3rd Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Being associated with the opposite armies as the Monarchy of Britain, on May 13, 1915, the 3rd Duke of Cumberland was struck off the Roll of the Order of the Garter. The Duke was then deprived of his British peerage titles, British citizenship, and title of Prince of Great Britain and Ireland by the Titles Deprivation Act on November 8, 1917. Lastly, on March 28, 1919, his British peerages were removed from the Roll of Peers by Order in Council. The 3rd Duke died on November 13, 1923.

His only surviving son was Ernest Augustus Christian George, reigning Duke of Brunswick-Lünburg from 1913 to 1918, died on January 30, 1953 and was succeeded by his eldest son.

Ernest August Georg Wilhelm Christian Ludwig Franz Josef Nikolaus, Prince of Hanover, born on March 18, 1914. Re-established his legal right to be a British subject in 1956. He died February 6, 1980, and was succeeded by his eldest son.

Ernst August Albert Paul Otto Rupprecht Oskar Berthold Friedrich-Ferdinand Christian-Ludwig, (HRH The Prince of Hanover), Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, Prince of Great Britain and Ireland, Head of the Royal House of Hanover and Ducal House of Brunswick and Lüneburg since 1987; in whom is vested the right to petition for restoration of the British peerages. He holds the Grand Cross Orders of St. George, Guelph, and Ernst August of Hanover, and Order of Henry the Lion of Brunswick. Presently has residences in Germany and Austria.

* In 1918, the United States’ full scale entry into the war, combined with severe German shortages of men and materials from years of attrition-based trench warfare, led to Germany’s military collapse. Wilhelm was forced to abdicate and went into exile in the Netherlands. Attempts by the victorious allies to extradite and try him for war crimes came to nothing. With Adolf Hitler’s rise to power after 1933, Wilhelm had hopes of being restored but they came to nothing and he died on 4 June 1941.

* Maria Feodorovna Romanova was born Princess Dagmar of Denmark, but through her marriage to Alexander III she became Empress Consort of Russia – and mother of the last Russian monarch, Nicholas II.

* Maria-Feodorovna and her surviving family left Russia in the spring of 1919. They boarded the British ship HMS Marlborough and never again set foot in their country. For a time Maria-Feodorovna stayed in London, the guest of her sister Alexandra and her nephew George V. Eventually she returned to Denmark where she occupied rooms at the royal palace in Copenhagen and spent time at Hvidore. She never accepted the fate of her sons and grandchildren, and in fact continued hoping that they all had managed to survive the revolution. Yet around her, life seemed to have frozen as all her loved ones slowly disappeared. Only the faint memories of her glamorous life in Russia remained, for by the time she died even her looks and mind seemed to be but a memory. Maria-Feodorovna passed away quietly on October 13, 1928.

She remained as Princess of Wales from 1863 until her husband succeeded to the throne as Edward VII. She is the longest serving Princess of Wales in history. She then served as Queen Consort from 1901 until Edward’s death in 1910.

Princess Alice of Greece, wife of Prince Andrew and mother of the Duke of Edinburgh.

PA 1142510 Before The War: Europes Royal Family In 1913

* She was born Princess Alice of Battenberg in 1885 at Windsor Castle, a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and raised as an English princess, although both her parents were German.
Alice was congenitally deaf but she could speak clearly.

Then in 1902, at the Coronation of King Edward VII, she fell head over heels in love with Prince Andrew, a younger son of the King of Greece. As her niece, Lady Pamela Hicks, explains, ‘She was absolutely dotty about him. Really, deeply in love.’

By 1914 Alice had four daughters. But in Greece, revolution was brewing, and shortly after Prince Philip was born in 1921, the Greek royal family were exiled. Aged 18 months, the future Duke of Edinburgh was bundled into a makeshift cot – an orange crate – as the family escaped on a British warship.

They arrived in Paris as refugees, living on handouts from relatives. The strain took its toll on Alice, and her impassioned religious beliefs became steadily more eccentric.  By 1930 she was hearing voices and believed she was having physical relationships with Jesus and other religious figures.

She was diagnosed as schizophrenic, and when treatment in a Berlin clinic failed – on the advice of Sigmund Freud her womb was blasted with X-rays to cure her of frustrated sexual desires – she was admitted to a Swiss sanatorium.

Or:

…after the Greco-Turkish war, Andrew and Alice were kicked out of Greece with their five children – four girls, who would marry Germans who later served under Hitler in the second world war. And Phil the Greek, who served in the British navy, before copping off with our Brenda. Oh, and Alice was back in occupied Greece during the war, rescuing Jews from the Nazis

* Andrew began military training at an early age, and was commissioned as an officer in the Greek army. His command positions were real appointments rather than honorary, and he saw service in the Balkan Wars. In 1913, his father was assassinated and Andrew’s elder brother, Constantine, became king. Dissatisfaction with his brother’s neutrality policy during World War I led to his brother’s abdication and most of the royal family, including Andrew, was exiled. On their return to Greece a few years later, Andrew saw service in the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), but the war went badly for Greece, and Andrew was blamed, in part, for the loss of Greek territory. He was exiled for a second time in 1922, and spent most of the rest of his life in France.

The Austrian Archduke Karl Franz Joseph with his wife the Archduchess Zita.

PA 14996993 Before The War: Europes Royal Family In 1913

* Archduke Franz Karl Joseph of Austria (17 December 1802 – 8 March 1878) from the House of Habsburg was father of two emperors (Franz Joseph I of Austria and Maximilian I of Mexico) as well as the grandfather of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, whose assassination sparked the hostilities that led to the outbreak of World War I, and the great-grandfather of the last Habsburg emperor Karl I.

* Franz Ferdinand (full name: Franz Ferdinand Karl Ludwig Josef von Habsburg-Lothringen) was born on 18 December, 1863 in Graz, Austria. As the eldest son of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria (younger brother of Emperor Franz Josef), there was no reason at this stage to believe he would ever be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. He pursued a career in the army (rising through the ranks from second lieutenant to Inspector General) after a strict education in history and moral character and the pursuit of hobbies such as hunting and travel. But in 1889, with the death of Ferdinand’s cousin Crown Prince Rudolf, and the subsequent death of Karl Ludwig in 1896, everything changed. Franz Ferdinand became the new heir to the throne. His marriage to Sophie Chotek von Chotkova in 1900 was denied by Emperor Franz Josef for a good while because she was considered beneath his station but they were finally allowed to marry on the condition that any children they had would be denied any rights of succession. Franz Josef did not attend the wedding.

Franz Ferdinand’s killer, Gavrilo Princip, was one of seven members of Mlada Bosnia (Young Bosnia), a Bosnian Serb terrorist organisation controlled by military intelligence in neighbouring Serbia. As ethnic minorities in Bosnia, these Serbs wanted to eliminate Ferdinand and the ruling powers because they were desperate for independence from Austria-Hungary, wanting instead to become part of Serbia. In actual fact, Franz Ferdinand was an advocate of Austria Hungary’s minorities having a greater say in matters which concerned them and in providing greater autonomy for the provinces, but only within the framework of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which wasn’t enough for the Bosnian Serbs. All seven members of Mlada Bosnia had tuberculosis, which was a terminal illness in 1914. Under this death sentence, they had nothing to lose by risking their lives for the Serbian cause.

Franz Ferdinand was perhaps unaware of the historical significance of the day he chose, as Inspector General of the Armed Forces, to visit imperial troops in Sarajevo. That particular date, 28 June, was a national holiday there, marking a tragic point in Serb history. St Vitus Day commemorated the 1389 Battle of Kosovo, where Serbia’s Christian Knights had been defeated by the Turks and the country lost its freedom for the next 500 years. Serb nationalist feelings were therefore, running high.

* Queen Mary was the wife of George V and mother to Edward VIII and George VI. She was an austere and regal figure, but this made her more, rather than less, admired, and her strong sense of duty and her steadfastness through both world wars earned her an enduring affection.

This most traditional of monarchs, however, oversaw some of the biggest upheavals the Royal Family has ever seen.

The worst came when, to her strong disapproval, her son, Edward VIII, abdicated the throne to marry the divorced American Wallis Simpson.

She had six children, and outlived three of them as well as her husband, who died 17 years before her. She lived to see her granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, ascend to the throne – the third of her descendants to do so – but died three months before the formal coronation.

She is buried alongside her husband in St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

* Mauretania, transatlantic passenger liner of the Cunard Line, called the “Grand Old Lady of the Atlantic.” It was launched in 1906 and made its maiden voyage in 1907; thereafter, it held the Atlantic Blue Riband for speed until 1929, challenged only by its sister ship, the Lusitania (sunk by a German submarine on May 7, 1915). During World War I the Mauretania worked as a transport and hospital ship. During its long career the ship made 269 double crossings of the Atlantic, exclusive of war work. Its last crossing was made in 1934, and it was broken up in 1935.

Franz Josef left the conduct of the war strictly to his military officials, although by 1916 he believed victory to be impossible and the break-up of his empire likely.

The last significant Habsburg monarch, remaining popular to the end of his life, Emperor Franz Josef died on 21 November 1916 after reigning for 66 years. His grand-nephew, Karl I, assumed the throne until 1918 as the last Habsburg monarch.

* The outbreak of World War One in 1914 temporarily strengthened the monarchy, with Russia allied to France and Britain against Austria-Hungary and Germany. In mid-1915 Nicholas made the disastrous decision to take direct command of the Russian armies. From then on, every military failure was directly associated with him.

With Nicholas often away, Alexandra took a more active role in government. Russia was suffering heavy losses in the war, there was high inflation and severe food shortages at home, which compounded the grinding poverty most Russians already endured. German-born Alexandra soon became the focus of discontent, as did her confidante, the mystic, Rasputin, who had been at court since 1905 and had gained great influence through his apparent ability to treat the haemophilia of Alexis, the heir to the throne.

In December 1916, Rasputin was murdered by a group of disaffected nobles. Then in February 1917, widespread popular demonstrations began in the capital Petrograd (as St Petersburg was renamed in 1914). Nicholas lost the support of the army and had no alternative but to abdicate. A shaky provisional government was established. The tsar and his family were held in various locations, eventually being imprisoned in Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains.

In October 1917, the Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional government. Following a harsh peace treaty with Germany in March 1918, Russia descended into civil war. On 17 July 1918, as anti-Bolsheviks approached Yekaterinburg, Nicholas and his family were executed. This was almost certainly on the orders of the Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin.

Whereas China Town suggests a place top get nicknacks and each crispy duck, Jew Town sounds satirical, like something from The Simpsons, or a slight. There and at other times, as ever, Charles and Camilla were the subjects of some cracking photos.

HOW goes Prince Harry’s plans for a trek with wounded soldiers to the South Pole – the Walking With The Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge?

Bad news. He’s suffered an injury. The Daily Express reports the words of a Kensington Palace spokesman:

“He’s broken his toe but he will still be taking part. It won’t have any impact on him. It’s still very much on.”

Let’s hope it stays on. Still, if H’s is anything like his dad, he’ll have another 11 toes to call upon…

FIRST Prince Harry dressed up a comedy Nazi. Now the Sun reports that another “toff” has donned the feldgrau:

TOFF in a Swastika outfit partied with Prince Harry’s girlfriend Cressida Bonas — but insisted last night: “I wasn’t a Nazi, I was an officer who tried to kill Hitler.”

He dressed as a failure?

Eton-educated financier Alex Stanbury, 34, chose the German military uniform for a zombie-themed bash attended by posh revellers including Princess Beatrice. Cressida, 24, mixed with the Iron Cross wearing reveller — reviving memories of her boyfriend Prince Harry’s Nazi uniform gaffe.

Got that? La Bonas (guffaw) went to a party where a man dressed as a Nazi, you know like “toff” Ed Balls did, and snooty Lemmy and the high-mannered Sid Vicious.

And later she “liked” a snap of the outfit on social media.

You can “like” these.

Alex, 34, insisted he was pretending to be “good Nazi” Claus von Stauffenberg — the German soldier played by Tom Cruise in the movie Valkyrie — who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944.

The Sun should have ignored the Nazis and led with “Bonas Toff Pal Dresses As Scientology Nutjob Tom Cruise”. That would have got him damned to hell.

Speaking from his £2million pad in Putney, South West London, Alex said: “I apologise to anyone that may have taken offence to it, that was not my intention. But in my defence I wasn’t a Nazi, I was Von Stauffenberg who tried to kill Hitler.”

The poor sod. Two mill gets you a studio flat in those parts. But come the revolution…

Up to 1,000 jet-setters including singer James Blunt were invited to the £100,000 bash at Carphone Warehouse tycoon David Ross’s sprawling mansion in Leicestershire. Cressida wore rounds of ammunition slung over her shoulders like a Rambo character. She stuck close to Beatrice, 25, who wore a French military uniform.

Beatrice dressed a French soldier…  Napoleon or Marshal Philippe Pétain, leader of Vichy France? And cressida dressed as Rambo, Adam Lanza or a Call of Duty whacko?

A party-goer told The Sun: “…sadly Cressida wasn’t aware of the implications of partying with people dressed as Nazis.”

What are the implications of that, then? That’s you still read Beatrix Potter?

Weird, no? Selling a card sent on a spiritual holiday for cash is a bit off, isn’t it? Weirder, still, buying the thing.

It’s useful, we suppose, if you are going to pretend the card was sent to you, before carving out a small carer as an expert in Charles and Di in the Daily Express newspaper. The woman you never knew revealed all in the swirls of her penmanship, you’ll say. Also, if you hold the card to the light and rub a candle over the black parts, a secret message appears. It’s a cry for help; a hint at the secret that Diana took to her grave. Read all about it …soon!

This card is from 1993.

HE might be only 3 months old, but shitting hell, Prince George is on a steep learning curve to find out how bizarre the human race is.

Today, third in line to a chair, he found himself being dipped in some water while someone said something about Jesus. Not just any water though. This water came all the way from the River Jordan, presumably purified to the point of Evian.

He was dragged to a huge building where there’s also a load of rotting corpses by a man who sometimes wears bejeweled dressing gowns, massive pointy hats and asks for advice from talking clouds.

The poor little sod.

Not only does little George have to deal with all that, but someone called gordon Summer, Chief Engraver for the Royal Mint, made a coin so special and commemorative, that no-one will actually ever spend it, thereby making it the most pointless money in the whole wide world.

On top of all that, George found himself going through tall this while dressed in a lace frock, which was a copy of a skirt that was worn by Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, first used in 1841. They could’ve bought him something nice and new, but that’s not the world George resides in. He lives in a world of peculiar humans with even more peculiar habits.

So weird is George’s life, that one newspaper wrote about what is ostensibly a baby being carried into a corpse festival, noting that he ‘appeared to wave at The Queen’, when it is clear that babies don’t wave at people they barely recognise at 3 months old. Little George is too concerned with eating and crapping it all out.

All the while, people pointed and stared at his mother and father, taking huge amounts of notes and telling everyone what clothes they were wearing. A procession of people followed the child, including a man who wants to be a leader of an organisation that can only be achieved by the death of other family members.

George would probably think that all sounds a bit macabre if he wasn’t too busy soiling his silken nappy.

George’s family read out loud from a book where a man who may or may not exist, before singing songs to this man – not to George – in a language no-one uses anymore. One of them was called ‘Be Thou My Vision’, which isn’t about the miracle of eyesight.

Weirder still, was that some complete strangers to the family camped outside the palace for more than 24 hours to obtain a good vantage point of a child being covered in some water, waving flags, which are sheets of plastic on a bendy stick which signify a collection of post codes and some anecdotes about a war none of us fought in.

Poor little Prince George. This world is only going to become more confusing for you. Wait ’til you have to put a sword on someone’s shoulder because they’ve been good, and they stick a golden hat on you that doesn’t even keep the rain off your head.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
