Thought Crimes And Adultery In Second Life
MORE on thought crime now as web enthusiast David Pollard uses his Second Life avatar to perform sexual acts on a “busty two-dimensional hooker”.
“SECOND WIFE,” puns the Sun. But it is not so. Mr Pollard has not married the computer image. He has married only one woman, the very real Amy.
David and Amy met in an internet chatroom five years ago. And now Amy walks in on her husband to discover him using his virtual self (David Barmy) to shag the aforesaid virtual other.
Amy applies for divorce. She cites her husband’s “unreasonable behaviour”. Says she:
“He never did anything in real life. But I had my suspicions about what he was doing in Second Life.”
Later she caught him “cuddling a woman on a sofa in the game”.

I wonder what her real reason is for seeking a divorce and using the opportunity for great publicity by claiming he is guilty of what? nothing but fantasies is how I see it. Dairy, sounds like something is gravely lacking in that marriage if he finds more enjoyment having a normal man’s desires and needs with an avatar on an internet game. It makes me question if it shouldn’t be him seeking the divorce not her.

“The virtual woman is just an exhibit of what is going on in Mr Pollard’s mind”: ummm, no. There was a real person behind that virtual woman, and he was interacting in an amorous way with that person, albeit over the net. It’s less like someone imagining sex as it is like someone having phonesex with someone else, or even (if we want to turn the clock back still further) exchanging hot passionate letters with someone else. The presence of the “someone else” is pretty important here, I think…

…that’s one sad individual if he can only get it on with an avatar…

Well, if Nick Bostrom’s right her husband could be a computer simulation, getting in touch with his inner programme…
