Madeleine McCann: Kate And Gerry McCann May Sue Express Newspapers Over Coverage
AS Anorak readers told us days ago, the Daily Express may be preparing itself for legal hostilities with the McCanns.
READ: Is Madeleine McCann Disappearing From The UK Press?
For days on end the Daily Express led with news - and no news - of Madeleine McCann. And they stopped all mention of her. No longer story big enough for the nationals?
If the McCanns sue the Express, what could it mean for the paper that “strands for decency”, as the adverts say, and for the McCanns who maintain they are innocent in their daughter’s vanishing?
Lawyers for Kate and Gerry McCann are considering taking legal action against British newspapers whose coverage they feel to have been incorrect and unfair.
Principally they are looking at the publications in The Express Group: The Daily Express, The Sunday Express, The Daily Star and The Daily Star Sunday.
Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for the McCann family, confirmed that their lawyers were in discussions, but denied that any writs had yet been issued.
“It’s wrong to say that we’re actually suing, but our lawyers have been assessing all articles, in all papers.
“We are extremely unhappy with The Express Group’s coverage. We always said it was the worst amongst all the tabloids.”
Anorak has been following the media’s treatment on the vanishing of a child. A feeding frenzy over a child missing. A child not here…

So, the questions now for the McCanns threatening to sue the Express group, are:
Are they trying to scare other news groups into keeping quiet after the Judiciary Police interviews have been completed?
Or are they simply greedy profiteers hiding behind “be compassionate at us, we the victimized parents”, hoping to cash in quickly for the depleted fund?
It strikes me that the British press, the Daily Mail, the Sun or the Mirror, have been publishing identical stories, many fed by Clarence Mitchell, so why are they going after these Express group newspapers in particular?
As always with the McCanns everything is about the money: the fund for the house, the expensive Extradition and Defence Lawyers, the website, the Metodo3 ‘detective agency’, the film and book deals, the paid documentaries and interviews…
Madeleine it’s not a little girl missing anymore, it’s a trademark registered by her parents…

I think it’s a mistake for them to antagonise the press - all they’ll do is make enemies.
March 7th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
It’s a misplaced energy and effort, which could be used for a better cause.
March 7th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Now the press might do some digging!!!!!!!!

Hope they do sue, then there will be a court case where the Mc Canns will have to prove that what they said was libellous, so they will have to prove that what they said is not trud. That should be interesting.

The McCanns are always threatening to sue……………admittedly the Express was writing something about Madeleine every day for months, always “sources”.
Wouldn”t the McCanns be treading on dangerous ground considering they are still
“Suspects”.
I think it is a ploy by CM to frighten the Press in view of the re-interviews, which
should take place soon.

Val I think you’re right. The Express stuff is mostly either Clarrie’s spin or copied from Portuguese tabloids, are they going to try to sue them too?

I think the press will definitely start to dig, if they don’t watch out.
I can’t do links and it was ages ago - but I read in one of the newspapers that some hacks resented Kate and Gerry for the slick way they put together the P.R. campaign within days of Madeleine going missing.

The best thing the press could do is to ignore them. They should not fuel their mania.

If I felt ashamed of every disgusting thing some Scottish man got up to - I’d never show my face in public again.
I mean - we’re the nation that gave the world Ian Brady, Denis Nielsen and Robert Black.
