Madeleine McCann: Porn, Liverpool For McCanns And Libel
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE INDEPENDENT: “Saga of the McCanns is not yet over”
Says Richard Ingrams:
No one can feel too sorry at the thought of Express owner Richmond Desmond, who has made a huge fortune out of pornography, having to shell out a fraction of his profits to the needy McCanns.
No, not climate porn, the Independent’s apocalyptic visions of climate change, but real flesh and hair porn - the porn that has given Richard Demsond “huge profits”; which must mean many not only enjoy porn and are happy to pay for it. Would “no one” feel sorry for Mr Desmond if his fine curtailed his porn output?
The Story of the McCanns and Express Newspaper was broken by Anorak
All the same, the story is puzzling. The Express was undoubtedly guilty of libel. But the suggestion that the McCanns might have been in one way or another responsible for their daughter’s death did not originate with the newspaper. It was the Portuguese police who long ago branded the McCanns as suspects. And officially they remain so. It has never been explained why they were so convinced of the McCanns’ guilt when all the facts seem to point the other way.
Facts? There is only one fact: Madeleine McCann is missing.
But, following this week’s libel settlement, there was general agreement that as a result of the Daily Express apology the McCanns had finally been cleared. But that isn’t so. They are still officially labelled arguido, or suspects. The Portuguese police are even anxious to re-interview the McCanns’ friends, the so-called Tapas Nine. So all those who were hoping they had heard the last of this story are likely to be disappointed.
General agreement by whom? And if the Tapas Nine are the McCanns’s friends aren’t they the Tapas 7, or the Sangria 7? Mr Ingrams is right to note that the case still open, those who thought they had heard the last of the story will be put out. But these days Madeleine McCann is no longer on tabloid front pages; she appears in comment pieces in the largely unread Independent. She is also missing.
LIVERPOOL POST: “Call for boycott of two newspapers in support of Madeleine McCann
Guardian journalist Roy Greenslade, former editor of The Mirror, suggested the idea on his blog.
Has the city of Liverpool so taken Madeleine McCann to its heart that it will boycott the Sun and Star, as it has the Sun? Of course, with the internet, locals can read such organs in privacy, behind closed curtain and locked doors.
Speaking to the ECHO, he said: “This isn’t good enough compensation, I feel that one editor should resign and proper action taken. These papers carried out a lengthy campaign and treated the McCanns very shabbily. For a multi-millionaire to be told to pay £550,000 is not a great deal of money.
“Lawyers were giving these papers due warnings during the coverage. No journalist has paid any price, but they will have been forced into the position and write these stories. There should be a boycott. Liverpool is a shining example of a city that refuses to allow bad journalism to go unpunished.”
Is there a special link between the McCanns and Liverpool?
Today, Susan Healy, Liverpool-born Kate’s mother, said that the untrue stories had caused great hurt to the family and friends. She added: “Kate is quite bitter about it as you’d expect. To see all those headlines again this week shocked me. It shouldn’t be legal. It was a diabolical time and I don’t know how anyone who gets satisfaction with writing lies like that.”
But the case is not over. Madeleine McCann is missing.
Clarence Mitchell, the McCann’s spokesman, said: “Kate and Gerry are pleased that the Express Newspapers apologised as fulsomely as they did. Immense distress was caused to the couple and their wider family and any action by people in the Liverpool area always helps to keep newspapers aware of their responsibilities and their requirements to stay within the law.”
Is your take on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann shaped by your region. Fact: 100% of Liverpudlians believe the McCanns are innocent; but just 56% of Cheltenham locals agree?
LEICESTER MERCURY: “MORE LIBEL SUITS TO COME?
Madeleine McCann’s family have not ruled out further court action following their £550,000 libel settlement. Kate and Gerry McCann’s lawyers are said to be holding a file of stories that could be acted upon, if they feel it is the right thing to do.
Kate and Gerry McCann are innocent. They have not been charged with any crime. Robert Murat is innocent. He has never been charged with any crime.
Says Clarence Mitchell:
“We are keeping all options open, neither ruling in further libel actions nor ruling them out. The lawyers have got a very large file of coverage they were unhappy with. We felt the Express group did it on a more defamatory basis, but there are other reports that gave the family cause for concern, not just in the UK. If action is taken it will be taken at a time of their choosing. This is a couple who have lost their daughter, who are not accused of any crime, yet who have been vilified unfairly and unjustly. They will act when they feel the boundaries are overstepped. We need to see how the dust settles.”

This site (and posts from its members on previous sites) make incredible claims about the McCann’s actions, beliefs, practices, careers, sex lives, veracity and general character that would offend the person in the street. Such defamation would never be allowed in the general media. The level of discussion is juvenile and the main emotional feel is that of people engaging in a dirty act seeking to find peer support for their nasty little secret. One feels that there is some pseudo-sexual satisfaction gained by these people in their web of negative and defamatory statements about one of the most compelling and obviously erroneous lines of reasoning is a dedication to the normal conspiracy theories that are all over the web.
This starts out with a half believable statement that the McCann’s protection comes from their middle-class status and support from the medical profession. This quickly degenerates into conspiracy theories- Gerry McCann serves as a Government advisor on Nuclear Fuel, hence it is a nuclear conspiracy, or that he is somehow linked to New Labour (is his secret father a Labour MP of old?) and is holding a great secret over the head of Gordon Brown, forcing Government support, or that because Gerry McCann is a Mason (is he?) then Branson and all the other supporters are engaging in a Masonic cover-up, aiding their brother.
Apparently, according to many threads, the Government is totally controlling the British and Overseas media and stopping the discussion of any negative material about the McCann’s. If only the Government had had such control of the press last October, there would have been no ‘wobble’ and Labour would still be high in the polls now.
It is not long before the Illuminati, the Bilderberg Group and even David Icke and his Saurians raise their ugly heads- all apparently responsible for the dreadful miscarriage of justice that is this case.
In olden days these people would have been gathering the farm implements and searching down the witches to burn. Modern laws about libel and harassment stop this outflow for their murderous animus and so their effluvium is found on a nasty little backwater of the internet. Look at it and wonder about the moral degeneration of our society.

“McCann Suspect Given Back Seized Items”
Updated:01:12, Sunday March 23, 2008
Portuguese police have returned computers and other possessions they seized from Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat, he has said.
Murat in PortugalHe described the move as a “very positive sign” - but is still waiting to be officially cleared of involvement in the British girl’s disappearance.
Mr Murat, 34, lives just yards from the holiday apartment in the Portuguese seaside resort of Praia da Luz, where Madeleine vanished on May 3 last year.
Detectives took him in for questioning 11 days after the child went missing and made him the first “arguido”, or formal suspect, in the case.

“After all, we don’t know which questions, if any, they didn’t answer.”
If Mrs. McCann ever felt the need to answer some of the questions she initially refused to answer, she would have submitted the answers in written form. We know that the McCanns’ lawyers made several requests to the investigators, as to naming witnesses etc. They have certainly given Mrs. McCann advice as to which answers if any she should submit in her own interest.

“it should have gained further credibility if Garth dismissed it”
That’s why I started discussing it with him. It was a pity he didn’t react / reject it more stronger!
I even thought about posting something like “rattling the cage” but considered that to be to obvious. Pity Daisy gave it away too. I bet some people [lurkers] have been reading all about it. We could start some interviews about it soon!

BTW I found Garth’s reaction quite reasonable. Given the fact that there was never any suggestion at all that DHMO was linked to the McCanns, he was quite right not to care at all what it means.
I was glad he at least bothered to recommend to dismiss it, because it should have gained further credibility if Garth dismissed it.

Yes, two addicts in one house it too much! And you have to make clear who’s the boss, isn’t it? mrT is allowed to control the remote control of the tv, I’m in charge of the computer[s]!
To stop him talking to the press makes no sense imo. He already signed a “secrecy” statement as a translator. He obviously wants to get rid of the status. They could imo have made a deal with him about lifting his status and him keeping his mouth shut until the pj says its’s okay to talk.

Yes, that’s true.
But then, as Totje says, if they’re all part of a cover-up, none of them would tell the truth anyway!
The only reason to question them and not the McCs is if they think the friends will tell the truth and the truth implicates K and G.
ade
I’m sure the PJ want to interview them again. I accept Ferdinand’s point that they’ve probably already said everything there is to be said but police often question people over and over again, don’t thy? (Don’t know from personal experience!)
I’m not sure how true it is to say they didn’t cooperate. After all, they stayed on for months and months, even after G really wanted to come back to start working again. (Mortgage!) They only appeared not to cooperate once accused of killing Madeleine. (Kate was accused, apparently, of the actual killing, and Gerry of helping her to dispose of the body. At least, that what the media reported……….) After all, we don’t know which questions, if any, they didn’t answer. They’ll have followed legal advice on that one anyway. Their Portuguese lawyer was with them.
However, your point is right. They are still arguidos.
