We’ve been acting pretty smug over the case of Josef Fritzl, who raped his daughter in a cellar for 24 years.
Yeah, there’s nothing like an incestuous rape to make us feel superior to those Austrians.
Oh, those Austrians are always locking their daughters up in dungeons, Fritzl is the most evil dad ever and thank God, it could never happen here, are three sentiments I’ve heard…
Austria is not the common link between men and monsters - it’s moustaches. Fritzl belongs to a line of inadequate powercrazed males who spewed forth evil while being too frightened to put a razor above their top lip. Think Hitler, Stalin and Saddam Hussein.
Let’s put Fritzl in perspective. And wasn’t Hitler Austrian? They say Saddam was Austrian and Stalin wore a green felt hat to bed.

Our chancellor has made an announcement that the government plans an “image campaign” showing the world how wonderful Austria is. He’s obviously afraid people are scared of Fritzlland and won’t come to the “Euro” football EM.
How embarassing is that?
First official announcement concerning the tragedy is talking about an “image campaign”?
Crime seems to be a universal phenomenon, but embarrassing politicians, too.

Fritzlland eh? We can hardly talk; we have Shipmanville and Westtown on our consciences! Not to mention Hyndleyham and a good few others! The fact is, wherever you get humans you get human nature, and a small proportion of that will be way beyond abnormal.
Josef F. was known to be a domineering husband and father. No doubt his first family kept their heads down for a quiet life. And as for the hostages, poor benighted souls, the syndromes attached to their situation are well documented.
You try to imagine what you would do if you knew there was absolutely no escape and no end to your suffering, and the responsibility of children to protect. No glib answers here.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Now, of course we can say ’someone must have known’, ’someone must have noticed something’. But who in (or out) of their right mind could have imagined something like this? I couldn’t.

The papers need to lay off. It doesn’t matter that he is Austrian… all over the world there are men and women who are capable of unimaginable evil, nothing to do with race or creed or choice of swimming trunks! Speedos? Aaarrgghh I mean, think Fabio Crapello? remember?
I just had a horrible thought…. supposing Fritzl had been knocked down and killed or mugged and shot or somesuch…. would they would all have starved to death down there? I wonder if he made any written provision with a lawyer? ‘in the event of my death…….’
The thought of that is even worse than what has actually happened. .

On the radio they said that he’d threatened to gas them all if they tried to escape or do anything to him, and that the police were going back to try and establish if he had actually put such a system in place.

In fact he was shielded by laws that were designed to protect Austrian fascists from the consequences of their crimes. Apparently his prior conviction (s) had been expunged from public records. It is hard to believe that no one in his large family suspected something was amiss. It will be interesting to know what Elizabeth’s siblings have to say for themselves. None of them knew he had been raping her from the age of 11? Difficult to fathom.

I also suspect that people were suspicious but did nothing, partly out of fear and partly out of laziness. Most people are afraid to do anything that has a risk of making their own situation worse. When people do stick their neck out they are called heroes, because its not the norm.
So no hero came for Elizabeth. Fritz should get a little credit for finally allowing the dying daughter and Elizabeth out of the dungeon, but that’s all…..

The beast should be tortured right in front of Elisabeth and her children and the authorities should let the other prisoners rape him like he did to his daughter in front of his kids. What a f*ing beast, I want to kill him right away. What are the sick authorities waiting for, and why didn’t Rosemary tell the authorities what a tyrant this beast was. This case has haunted me and I cannot rest, I go to google each days for an update on the beast………..kill him, kill him slow
