Madeleine McCann: Antoinette McGuckin, Drunk Parents In Portugal And Three Maddies
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR: “DRUNK HOLIDAY BRITS’ CHILDREN TAKEN INTO CARE”
A British couple on holiday in Portugal got so drunk their three children were taken into care. Hotel staff called the authorities when the pair seemed unable to look after the two boys, aged six and one, and a girl of two.
Bit judgemental?
Sources said the parents came back in a “drunken stupor” from a “euro-apint” bar in Vilamoura.
But what has it to do with Madeleine McCann?
The town is a 45-minute drive from Praia da Luz, where Madeleine McCann vanished a year ago.
DAILY EXPRESS: “DRUNKEN HOLIDAY BRITONS HAVE CHILDREN PUT IN CARE”
The alleged incident took place on Friday evening at the Mourabel Apartments in the resort of Vilamoura, 40 miles away from where Madeleine McCann disappeared last May.
THE HERALD: “British children taken into custody in Portugal as parents too drunk”
Hotel staff in Vilamoura, in the Algarve, called police after Eamon McGuckin, 34, and his wife Antoinette, 32, collapsed while on holiday on Friday night. The couple, believed to be from Magherafelt, Northern Ireland, were taken to a health centre in nearby Loule while their children, one-year-old Adam, two-year-old Amy and Aaron, six, were taken to the Refugio Aboim Ascensao children’s home in Faro.
Allegedly, of course. It’s shocking. And worse:
The incident happened on the eve of the first anniversary of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, who went missing from her family’s Algarve holiday flat while her parents dined nearby.
DAILY MAIL: “Three British children taken into care after parents ‘drank themselves into a stupor’ on Algarve holiday”
The manager of the Mourabel hotel in Vilamoura, where the family were staying, said: “Fortunately the children were safe - otherwise it might have been not one Maddie, but three Maddies.”
THE SCOTSMAN: “Family in care after parents collapse drunk”
The incident happened on the eve of the first anniversary of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, who went missing from her family’s Algarve holiday flat while her parents dined nearby. Referring to the McCann case, Dr Villas-Boas said: “The press were not around – they were very fortunate in that there was very heavy news from Great Britain that day.”
THE SUN: “McCanns in legal boost”
MADDIE McCann’s parents were boosted last night by a law chief’s hints they may soon be cleared of involvement in her disappearance.
May…
Portugal’s attorney-general appeared to pave the way for the search to be shelved by saying cops should feel “no shame” if they fail to find Maddie.
Appeared…
The comments follow claims the McCanns’ arguido – official suspect – status may soon be lifted.
Claims. May…
GLASGOW DAILY RECORD: Letter to the editor:
I AGREE with Mrs M. Stewart that Madeleine McCann T-shirts should carry a picture of her parents in case the little girl sees one. I’ve tried several times on the internet, etc, to buy a Madeleine T-shirt but they’re always sold out. I will be visiting Australia and Dubai soon and I wanted one to wear when I’m there.
As well as showing support, Maddie could be around the next corner. Every little counts.
THE TIMES: “For endurance, Myleene’s in a different Klass”
Amid the terrible stories from Tibet, Austria and Zimbabwe, and the agonising search for Madeleine McCann, we sincerely hope, reader, that your well of sympathy has not run dry. Dig deep and find some pity, won’t you, for Myleene Klass, M&S model, classical pianist, TV presenter and former member of Hear’Say, whose spirit in adversity should be an example to us all.
Myleene, you see, has had a baby. And she has made the unique discovery that this can sometimes involve stuff that isn’t at all like pouting in a bikini.

Blooming nanny state
First we learn that we can’t leave our kids at home to go cash a giro, now we learn that only one parent can get sloshed at a time.
Soon they’ll be telling us that we have to give them regular meals, make sure they’re appropriately clothed and even (heaven forbid) read them bed time stories.

Next chapter: reconstruction or no reconstruction?
Also, the PJ seems to be learning now? did you read the story about the irish family?
Parents judged for neglect and drinking in front of minors
At least, none of those children have disappeared….I wonder if the mccanns will gert hold of this story as theirs, again?
Why NOT the mccanns then?
“The manager of the Mourabel hotel in Vilamoura, where the family were staying, said: “Fortunately the children were safe - otherwise it might have been not one Maddie, but three Maddies.”
I reminds me of a comment I made about tourism and british toutrist and somebody almost bit my head off for saying what I personally have seen over the years in spain and really is not nice .
In fact the mccanns are not really exceptional:they did what brits do all the time: get heavily pissed, disregarding and dismissing ALL safety rules, for themselves AND others.I wont comment on complete lack of respect as well….
Sorry about this, but it is true and the worse is when something happens,it is someone else fault….

As I was saying………
Way back in the early days, I wrote to K & G telling them of what Christine had said, the things that had come right out of that, and the fact that she - Christine - would gladly give her services for nothing if they could just fly her over to Portugal, with some of the “Find Madeleine Fund” money of course, and she would get on the trail whilst it was still “hot”, she can pick up on stuff centuires old as I can certainly vouch for. Needless to say, she nor I , ever heard anything in return.
Since reading about the Documentary recently, which I could not be bothered to watch, we noted that K & G have kept all letters that they have received in boxes labeled variously “Well-wishers” , “Nasty” and one was labeled “Psychics and Mediums”, now tell me….why have they not gone through THAT box, set out all the common threads, and followed them up ?
I know that it has been said that 150 Mediums contacted the Portuguese Police, probably as many contacted the Leics. Police and there just MUST be something common to all of those from any “worth their salt”, and surely - when grasping at straws in the matter of your child’s disappearance, wouldn’t you try anything at least once ??

I think the story was that 1500 mediums allegedly wrote to the McCann’s
and one Tenth of the contact letters..ie 150..were forwarded to Police.

Really ? then one has to ask, why did they forward them on to the Police ? must have thought something in there was credible enough ?

Jo 7……You’re so right. (never thought I’d say that did you??
) I have said the same so many times but always get shouted down.
Sadly it is pretty much the norm in certain resorts in Iberia isn’t it?
I’ve been in hotels where the children (of all ages) roam the hotels at night causing chaos while the parents drink themselves into oblivion in the bars. I’ve seen them in swimming pools and on the beach unsupervised and in the dark….. and if the youngest can’t walk one of the others pushes it around in a buggy, sometimes till the early hours.
The Iberian Hoteliers Assoc. have discussed it many times but to make too much noise means losing business. Apparently Brits are worst, next come Germans and Dutch….
I wrote a feature on it several years ago for, I think, the Express.
Regardless of Madeleine, come the summer, the same will be going on in the holiday hotspots. Sadly when these particular parents pack their suitcases they unpack their brains and leave them at home.
Lovely sunny day today so am going to sit in the garden and work!

Ah !! different complexion then….but I was about to say, maybe that’s why they searched the dilapidated barn. Christine had given a dilapidated house, a friend in her circle had given a tumble-down shed and so on so maybe some more had come up with enough similarities to make them go up there.

“”"I always got shouted down”
Not quite so, coolandcalm.
I responded to your post re that….to the effect that I considered it not
a justifiable “excuse” for the McCann’s…just because several others are
indulging in risky childcare practices…doesn’t make it right, or safe,
for anyone else to do so.
Not a “shout-down”…more like a reasonable comment on my part I
think.

Now I DO remember that !! trouble is, it has all been going on for so long you tend to forget the salient points but having said that, it just goes to show that Christine was right, the triangulation was done long after she gace that gem to them

May 5th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Matt…. I’ve never said it was a justifiable excuse for anyone, just that it is sadly a fact of life of many Brits on holiday.
So many here said it wasn’t so but it is. I hate it and it I think the law should be enforced.
I’ve never said otherwise.
All I stick with still is that I don’t think the McCanns killed Madeleine or spirited her away or any such thing. I genuinely beleive she was abducted. Yes they enabled it inidrectly but I hate the thought of the perpetrator getting away with it because we are focused on the parents.
