A Velvet Curtain Has Fallen Across Eurovision
THE Eurovision votes are in and we can confirm that the toe-tapping hit (insert name here) by (ditto) came bottom.
Says Terry Wogan in the Sun: “You have to say that this is no longer a music contest. Western European participants have to decide whether they want to take part from here on in, because their prospects are poor.”
Wogan rightly poo-poos the notion that Russians can sing better, than, the syncopated Irish (“Drag acts and bad acts and Terry Wogan’s wig
Mad acts and sad acts, it was Johnny Logan’s gig”) or the Maltese (”Vodka that’s the secret word/ VODKA and they want it so bad / VODKA I’ve deciphered the code / Got a rush in the head VODKA / A transparent word.”)
Compare them to Russia’s winning entry, as sung by Dima Bilan, who seems to have taken the “BELIEVE” message held aloft by Manchester United fans in Moscow for the Champions League final and run with it:
As long as I’m breathing
There is not a limit to what I can dream
Cause I’ve got something to believe in
Believing
Mission to keep climbing
Nothing else can stop me if just believe
And I believe me
On the message boards, a “fan” writes: “Pull the plug on it. Now we have the Eastern Bloc competing and voting only for their near neighbours, it’s time for Western Europe to give it a miss.”
A velvet curtain, with bits of silver tassels and a see-through bit by the hem, is falling across Europe.
If we can get a safety curtain behind it, there is every reason to hope that we in the West can spend the next decades feeling superior about our music.
Take it away, Sir Cliff…

…since when have Turkey and the like been part of Europe anyway (either West or East)? …and don’t even get me started on Israel….
I agree Bulldump - time to remove the financial contribution….

i think this may be a case of the world biting the hand that feeds it. germany and england, the 2 biggest financial contributers are guaranteed entry to the finals purley because of their financial input.
Stop the funding, and let individuals have to be sponsored by their governments and maybe this will increase the quality. I WANNA SEE KHAZAKSTAN BLOW THEIR WELFARE BUDGET ON A CELEBRATION

The Anorak team are gathering, have no fear - we just need music lyrics and singers, but our spirit is very willing and we’ll even do without the songs and singers….
