MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “Much has been made of Tommy Tiernan mentioning Madeleine McCann on Friday night.”
Much has been made of it in the Irish Independent, here and here.
Both Sean Hughes ["You've got kids? What'd you do, tell them you were off to a tapas bar?"] and Patrick Kielty ["If the McCanns wanted to dispose of the body of their daughter, they should have checked her in as luggage on a Ryanair flight"] have already gone down this road, making the subsequent tabloid frenzy rather ridiculous. Tiernan made no mention of the offensive gag at the show I caught on the Saturday.
Want to know what the joke was? Want to use one to get publicity for your act? The Irish Independent will not dignify it with a mention. But on the paper’s message boards, we learn:
He was talking about his new baby daughter and mentioned that now, when he wants to have séx with his wife, he gives the child a half bottle of Calpol to shut her up - a tip he learned from the McCanns.
DAILY RECORD: “Charity boss facing sack over Madeleine McCann joke”
A CHARITY boss is facing the sack over a sick joke about Madeleine McCann.
Senior manager Lynn McBain has been suspended after referring in a staff newsletter to “McCann oven chips” disappearing from her oven after she left them there for 20 minutes .
More tabloid outrage and jokes - here, here and - the one decent joke - here…

Had you bothered to read the case law referred to you would probably have found it incomprehensible, but at least it would have given you some clue as to why the McCanns have claimed apparently from the start, with no evidence to support it, that a dastardly villain stole their daughter
___________________________________________________________
What would you know about what I may or may not have read? Also, how crass of you to insult my intelligence. My simple point is that inane chit-chat has choked this last remaining discussion forum. The next thread has 31 replies only and these are 98% chat so anyone logging on to the topic could well infer that all interest in MM has died.
—————————————
Had you bothered to read the case in question you would be aware that I was not insulting your intelligence.
Their Lordships can write with pellucid clarity on a wide range of topics, but this wasn’t one of them.
The Borstal Boys judgement threw a large spanner in the works of negligence claims in this country; the ratio decidendi is more or less incomprehensible.
On occasions the Courts decide what the right answer is and dispense with providing a rational way to get there; much easier to do if it’s the House of Lords when there was no-one to argue with them.
The fact that you cannot be bothered to read the case says rather more about you than it does about Anorak; there’s no shortage of informed discussion here, on a very wide range of topics.
Regrettably from time to time there is a surplus of people who imagine that their role in life is to reprove us for our shortcomings whilst making no contribution to the discussion; informed or otherwise…

I would have thought, on reading the post again, that Leeza is making a point against the posters, not mods and admin.
I’m sure that the posters are more than capable of responding to Leeza’s comments politely and inclusively?

Indeed, Coolandcalm, she was complaining about the posters, we don’t take kindly to posters arriving with nothing to say other than offering abuse regarding other posters offerings.
Leeza apparently feels that the forum should be more informative for her benefit.
If she wishes to complain that the forum is not sufficiently informative for her then she should complain to the editor - not the other posters.

………………
Leeza, IMO forum has been running for a long time and many posters have got to know each other (virtually) so it does inadvertently become cliquey sometimes and posters post even when there’s no news on Madeleine mcCann.
Best thing to do is not comment negatively and scroll the rude posters. Makes for an easy life all round!

Leeza, I think you are labouring under several misapprehensions here.
Anorak is not a dedicated Madeleine McCann Forum, it is a satirical news site. We have been here for 12 years now in our present format.
There are several dedicated Madeleine McCann sites around that you might be happier with. Some of them are totally humourless and very intensive.
If you do not like our format, can I suggest that you move onto a site that you do like, rather than abuse our posters who are generally a pretty cheery and witty crowd.
If you merely wish to complain about the way in which this site is run, would you address your remarks to editor@anorak.co.uk - rather than to our other posters.

Tosh.

That is the hole they are trying to wriggle out of; they think they’ve found a way to avoid the negligence charge in this country.
Unsurprisingly they really don’t want to test their theory in Court…

I am screaming mad about what happened to Madeleine, and what happens to other children all over the world every single day. BUT, if I couldn’t find my way to have a SENSE OF HUMOUR (take careful note Leeza and Cheryl), they would have to come and take me off to the funny farm permanently - ok, I’ll go clean the house now

I had hoped to celebrate June’s Birthday by sleeping in, as befits a fellow owl.
But, specially in her honour I have woken up early.
Well, actually it’s more of the Great British Common Cold which has woken me up early.
In June.
Happy Birthday June!

I am going to feel bad for the rest of the day now ….. but I cant stand childishness in adults
***********************
I can live with the childishness, but it’s all the ones who come on here and preach to us as to how we ought to run this web site who get to me……….do you think they go round other peoples houses telling them how they ought to run their homes?
Can you imagine going into a pub and loudly complaining that they should sell more coffee and please get all these people drinking alcohol out of here?……….but then I suppose that is what the non-smokers did effectively……aah the joys of a nanny state.

Listeners call for the censorship of a book because of the disappearance of Madeleine
In the United Kingdom, the radio show “A book at bedtime” (Book at Bedtime) on BBC 4, which claims to soothe his audience by reading a novel before they go to sleep, was flooded with complaints about the choice of the book “Without Person” (Helpless) by the Canadian writer Barbara Gowdy. According to the auditors, following the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the choice of a work which deals with a case of paedophilia was “totally inappropriate”.
The work, according to his publisher, “is a psychological thriller, but also table an intimate immense distress already expressed by its title, which summarizes the lives of many within our major cities.”
In “Sans Personne ” the young Rachel, nine years, was abducted one night storm, during the absence of his mother. Thus begins a singular case of missing child.
“The subject is bland and gaving the society in which we live, totally inadequate. I can not believe that you have chosen to submit the details of the sinister obsession that haunts an adult to a child,” accuses a listener.
Barbara Gowdy, who got the biggest literary prizes in Canada, is the author of seven novels and books translated in many countries, including France and Belgium

Those comedians should have come to Anorak - there have been far better jokes on here.”
The best one for me so far is “We have been assured that everything we did was within the bounhds of good parenting.”
Brilliant script writing. The timing was superb, and the hideous comic put-on regional accent with the whiny nasal trang just added to the humour.
