One Of Our Plaques Is Missing
“LOWEST OF THE LOW,” says the Express. “Scrap metal gang steals plaques of our war dead.”
To Plymouth, where four bronze plaques have been wrenched from a naval memorial that features the names of men and women who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
The plaques can be replaced at a cost of £2,000 each.
Says sculptor Andy Mitchell: “It’s a sad comment on our time.”
Unlike the memorial which is tragic comment on the last century…

Anorak makes an excellent point in conclusion, however, since many died in vain, and not all are commemorated, at least a few should be. I don’t think that they glorify war, just those that died, usually in that local community, and UK war memorials are some of the best, IMHO, since others can be very martialistic (the usual complaint leveled at those by our own soft left).
I’d say however that it’s more symptomatic of the recession, rather than the falling morals old chestnut. Stealing bronze for scrap is a real problem in Latin America (for eg), whole generals on horses go missing overnight, and get stolen again if replaced, the solution became to do clay or resin ones, I hope this does not happen over here.

Plymouths a big place. The plaque from our war memorial was stolen (Stocksfield) northumberland, presumably for scrap. As a small village we can’t afford to have it replaced and the place it came from has been empty for about 3 months.
Truly this country has a good deal of scum.

The buggers’ll nick anything…never mind valuable bronze.
The field at the rear of Mrs Mic’s parents’ house has recently been cleared of an infestation of travellers.
2 weeks later, on returning from holiday, the outlaws found that some bugger had dug up and half-inched their metal washing line pole, concrete base and all.
