Madeleine McCann: The News Of The World’s Sorry Apology For Tabloid Reporting

mccann-news-of-the-world-300x225 Madeleine McCann: The News Of The Worlds Sorry Apology For Tabloid ReportingMADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann

HAVING read “the heartbreaking TRUTH that destroys the lies of Portuguese police”, the oh-so-caring News of The World tells its readers:

“We today offer Kate our immediate and sincere apologies.”

No need, surely..?

The News of the World only published extracts from Kate McCann’s private diary because it cares. It wants to help. It has investigated the case of her daughter’s vanishing and found that the Portuguese police are bungling and to blame.

Yeah, those sicko coppers like Goncalo Amaral who seek to profit from the McCanns agony by publishing books. Not sure how much Amaral’s book costs, but the NOTW is under a pound.

Says the paper:

“We published the extracts in the belief held in good faith that we had Kate’s permission to do so.”

Did the caring NOTW ask Kate McCann to publish extracts from her diary, or just think she would agree to it?

The extracts also appeared in The Sun, the NOTW’s sister paper. How did the paper come by them? A police leak? How the papers hate those:

THE SUN: “McCann cops deny ‘smears’”

The Sun: “Leaks, smears … now plane lies”

How the caring tabloids hate those leaks from the Portuguese police:

Madeleine McCann: Liz Hunt Wonders, The Leaked File And The End

As the NOTW explains:

“It is now clear that our belief was misplaced, and that, in fact, Kate neither approved of nor knew the extracts were to be published.”

“Belief”. Yeah, not fact, just an educated hunch…

That apology in full:

Last week we published extracts from Kate McCann’s diaries and explained in the article that we were doing so to “nail the lies” about Kate created by selective leaking from the diaries by Portuguese police.

No, not to make easy headlines, to keep the story alive and sell more newspapers (surely to keep Our Maddie in the public eye? - Ed).

We published the extracts in the belief held in good faith that we had Kate’s permission to do so. It is now clear that our belief was misplaced, and that in fact Kate neither approved of nor knew that the extracts were to be published.

Misplaced. Not wrong…

Upon learning of our error we immediately removed the extracts from our website and we today offer Kate our immediate and sincere apologies. We have agreed to make a donation to be used in the search for Madeleine. The News of the World remains wholly supportive of the McCanns and their continuing campaign to find their daughter.

Make a donation, or be sued, perhaps…

    Morning all!

Am feeling a bit shell shocked at being awake this early on Sunday, but at least the News of the Screws finally did the decent(ish) thing and copped to wanton stupidity and unbelieveable irresponsibility.

Now all we need to know is which part of Team McCann assured them that publishing the diary was a good and approved idea…

‘The police asked me whether the couple - a tall man who they said might be German, and a slightly shorter blonde woman who was possibly Polish - had come in to eat here,’ said Sally Vincent, a long-time British resident who runs the popular Casa Grande hotel and restaurant just outside Burgao. The couple had been seen in two restaurants near the town’s rock-sheltered beach. After police investigators assembled a sketch from residents’ descriptions, they returned with CCTV stills from the petrol station and interviewed dozens of shopkeepers and others. ‘The pictures showed two men and a blonde woman, but you couldn’t see the faces clearly, so it was impossible to tell,’ said the owner of a souvenir shop about 50 yards back from the beach.

‘They were definitely here in our restaurant - twice,’ said a waiter at A Barraca, across the road. ‘They came in once for lunch and then for dinner on the day before the British girl went missing. I think they may have been Polish - I speak German, so I don’t think they were German - but they spoke very good English. The last night they were writing postcards, and when they left they said “This is our last night, because we’re leaving tomorrow”.’

Throughout last week police with sniffer dogs combed the coastline in both directions from Burgao’s beach but turned up no sign of the missing girl. Similar searches were made by police and volunteer units in a 10-mile radius around the Praia da Luz complex. But police called off the search on Friday, and yesterday were focusing on interviews with Madeleine’s parents, other British families staying in adjacent flats, and current and former staff at the resort. While Portuguese law bars police from making any detailed comment about investigations, they have taken the unusual step of telling local reporters that, despite a 12-hour session with her parents, Kate and Gerry, which lasted past midnight, they were being interviewed only as witnesses.

    Thank you, Brandon.
I wasn’t following the case yet at the time, just thinking the parents were a bit “strange” …

  11. 11 Rasputin Says:

Police have been here 20 or 30 times but not for the McCann case, they asked about the furnace.”

Hoos claimed that police had asked him today about the recent visit of a Polish couple who had brought a large bag asking for it to be incinerated.

He said detectives asked him it if was possible that there had in fact been a baby in the bag which was sent to Lisbon for cremation.

But he claims that he checked and it was a Labrador.

Sorry, we’re having a bit of weirdness on the software; I’ll delete the copy to this.

  12. 12 Rasputin Says:

Thanx Arte, not as weird as the goings on at the dark place now that the DVD that would confirm their prejudgement and prejudices, has done the exact opposite. The dismissal of the dogs alertings by the Portuguese lab appears to have put the cat among the pigeons.

On the locations and the pieces that were marked and signalled by the blood dog, forensics tests were performed, especially at a reputed British laboratory (Forensic Science Service – check Appendixes I and VII – FSS Final Report) but also, some of them at the reputed National Institute of Forensics Medicine (check Appendix I), whose final results did not corroborate the canine markings, which is to say, cellular material was collected that was not identified as pertaining to anyone specific, and it was not even possible to determine the quality of that material (v.g. whether it could be blood or another type of bodily fluid).

    and?

What about Eddie the cadaver dog ?

  14. 14 Watcher Says:

HAH! and PAH! So now what have we got against the McCanns? Not much? What happened to the little girl in Amsterdam?? NOT BELGIUM. The one who spoke English? In Holland?

Oh yes, I know, they left her and her brother and sister and they shouldna!!

  15. 15 Madame Arcati Says:

Are most of the commenters here on sedatives?

  16. 16 Rasputin Says:

Eddie the one that found a smell ? that forensics could not confirm, because they could not and would not confirm that which was non-confirmable. In a nutshell inadmissible, useless whatever semantics you choose, in the end result useless.

  17. 17 Marie Nicholas Says:

    Watcher

“Oh yes, I know, they left her and her brother and sister and they shouldna!!”

In case you find it ridiculous to still mention it, it is also ridiculous to still mention the Portuguese police should have found the child by now, or to mention that the parents were devastated, or to still mention that there were sightings everywhere.

Leaving the children alone is the beginning of the case, without which there would have been no case. So, whenever we speak of that case, we are speaking of precisely that, all of us, you included, unless artificially putting the first act of the play aside, and pretending it has nothing to do with what followed.

  18. 18 sam Says:

marie n, that couldve been the case the previous evenings but perhaps not that evening.

  19. 19 sam Says:

could the notw’s apology be a tad sarcastic ?

As far as I can remember….

The Portuguese tracker dogs led the Police, via a live scent of M., to another apartment in the block, on the probably the 4th, or possibly the 5th May 2007.

This apartment was occupied by two Polish women.

They were seen to leave the apartment, heads covered, escorted by and driven
    away by the Police.

Nothing more had been reported about that in the Press after that.

Pleased to see that some mention of it in the Files though.

  21. 21 Châtelaine Says:

    Thank you, MATT.
Since you have such an excellent file knowledge, do you know who was in apartment 5C? Forgive me if I’m going over old ground, but I still find it strange that a group booking in advance for a holiday out of high season, would not have been together …

  22. 22 Marie Nicholas Says:

    Sam,

    True Sam.

But the parents themselves said it happened that way! Whether we believe them or not, the two facts : “left alone” and “disappearance” are linked, by the parents themselves. So even if it is boring to talk about it, it is hocus-pocus to leave it aside.

At a time, I thought the parents pretended they left the children alone in order to make the disappearance plausible. But since they did it every night, with a few checks, some of them quite cursory, I realise it was their habit to do so. Even though they say it is “what any reasonable parent would do”, I see no harm in saying it isn’t, for the benefit of children whose parents who might be tempted to do the same, as,unfortunately, the McCs have followers. Here, a little boy disappered last week ; his mother left him alone while dining ou nearby with her companion. He had disappeared when she came back. That is how she reported it.

I’ve read about that case. I think your last line is an appropriate addition …

Who was it then who kindly passed the dubious Journal to the NOTW and who

    Clarence or his replacement ? ? :)

Was Dr K being “kept in the dark ” ?
