The Most Inappropriate 9/11 Items Ever: The ‘Fun’ Superman Wine Flask

AS the anniversary of 9/11 looms, we scout about for the most appropriate gift to mark the murders of thousands of people and the grinding War on Terror. We find a Superman Flask and some wine to fill it:

“Liebs Cellars in Long Island is promoting a wine that was made “using grapes grown 90-miles from the site of the World Trade Center.”

Like The 9/11 Victims, Osama Bin Laden ‘Had It ‘Coming’

OSAMA bin Laden is dead. Well, so they say. The US killed him. The US will hunt and kill Bin Laden’s friends. You can tell something about a man by the kind of friends he keeps. Says The Guardian‘s Michael White:

Plenty of Europeans – including friends of mine – muttered quietly when they watched the twin towers fall in Manhattan that “the Americans had it coming”.

The Death Of Awal Gul: Guantanamo Detainee Dies In Jail

AWAL Gul has died. Glenn Greenwald looks at the death of a man charged who though charged with no crime who spent nine years in jail:

A 48-year-old Afghan citizen and Guantanamo detainee, Awal Gul, died on Tuesday of an apparent heart attack.  Gul, a father of 18 children, had been kept in a cage by the U.S. for more than 9 years — since late 2001 when he was abducted in Afghanistan — without ever having been charged with a crime.  While the U.S. claims he was a Taliban commander, Gul has long insisted that he quit the Taliban a year before the 9/11 attack because, as his lawyer put it, “he was disgusted by the Taliban’s growing penchant for corruption and abuse.”  His death means those conflicting claims will never be resolved; said his lawyer: “it is shame that the government will finally fly him home not in handcuffs and a hood, but in a casket.”  This episode illustrates that the U.S. Government’s detention policy — still — amounts to imposing life sentences on people without bothering to prove they did anything wrong.

World Suicide Week Ends on 9/11 – The Day The Suicidal Became Murderers

WORLD Suicide Prevention Week takes in 9/11 – the day when suicidal loons killed thousands in New York. The week begins on September 5 and ends on the 11th.

World Suicide Prevention Day falls on 10 September –one day before 9/11. The World Health Organisation says:

On average, almost 3000 people commit suicide daily. For every person who completes a suicide, 20 or more may attempt to end their lives.

A suicide makes for a grim statistic. But why did World Suicide Day have to be one day before 9/11? The first World Suicide Day was in 2003, after the attack on the Twin Towers in 2001.

Bar For Islamic Gays To Open Next To 9/11 Mosque

PLANS to build a mosque next to the site of 9/11 are creating a heated debate. Greg Gutfield realises that whatever your isms, capitalism rules:

So, the Muslim investors championing the construction of the new mosque near Ground Zero claim it’s all about strengthening the relationship between the Muslim and non-Muslim world.

As an American, I believe they have every right to build the mosque – after all, if they buy the land and they follow the law – who can stop them?

Which is, why, in the spirit of outreach, I’ve decided to do the same thing.

I’m announcing tonight, that I am planning to build and open the first gay bar that caters not only to the west, but also Islamic gay men. To best express my sincere desire for dialogue, the bar will be situated next to the mosque

This is not a joke. I’ve already spoken to a number of investors, who have pledged their support in this bipartisan bid for understanding and tolerance.

Will the mosque perform gay marriages?

Stop The Manhattan Mosque – It’s In A Muslim Zero Tolerance Area

PLANS to construct an Islamic community centre close to near ground zero have fallen foul of the Anti Defamation League. It’s freedom, for sure, But it is a freedom that might cause offence. Freedom means you have the right to be offended. As the report on Ground Zero (Zero Intolerance)  goes:

Proponents of the Islamic Center may have every right to build at this site, and may even have chosen the site to send a positive message about Islam. The bigotry some have expressed in attacking them is unfair, and wrong. But ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right. In our judgment, building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain –unnecessarily — and that is not right.

So. All Muslims caused 9/11? How close to Ground Zero is it ok to build a Muslim community centre? We need guidance, people. Is it one mile? Ten miles? 1,000 miles?

Sophie Dahl’s Eton Whores And 9/11 Cricket

SOPHIE Dahl hs written Miss Dahl’s Voluptuous Delights. It’s a cook book to go with her cooking show. The Telegraph digests and features Dahl in conversation:

She wasn’t inhibited by having a celebrated literary grandfather, Roald Dahl, from writing her own books…

She’s made of solid stuff. But not of her food is:

Too much rosewater in the rhubarb Eton mess, she warns, produces an effect “like walking into a bordello”.

Daily Mirror Accuses Tory Treasurer Michael Spencer of ‘Cashing In’ On 9/11, Offers Apology

5850522WAS it brave of foolish of the Mirror to take on Tory Treasurer Michael Spencer in an article entitled, “CASHING IN ON 9/11”?

Tory treasure Michael Spencer shamelessly poached key figures from a rival finance firm while it was still grieving the loss of 658 staff in the Twin Towers terror attack.

Grim stuff. The article is equipped with a shot of a beaming Spencer stood by David Cameron, another shot of Spencer holding a bottle of champers and a picture of the Twin Towers ablaze. Subtle it ain’t.

The other firm, readers learn, was Cantor Fitzgerald, a firm that lost its New York staff on that terrible day.

But as they came to terms with the death of their friends in the US, scheming billionaire Spencer was plotting to lure staff to his broking firm ICAP – despite a pledge to Cantor boss Lee Amaitis he would stay away. He even cynically referred to the snatch as a ‘heist’.

Staring Horror For Post-9/11 US Muslims

staringIN commemorating 9/11, the Associated Press remembers the victims of that unforgettable day:

There is the dread of leaving the house that morning. People might stare, or worse, yell insults. Prayers are more intense, visits with family longer. Mosques become a refuge.

From staring.

Eight years after 9/11, many U.S. Muslims still struggle through the anniversary of the attacks. Yes, the sting has lessened. For the younger generation of Muslims, the tragedy can even seem like a distant memory.

Locerkbie Targeted In Britain’s 9/11 Lucozade Bomb Plot

bomberHOW do you describe the Islamists who planned to murder thousands of people, and their plot? Here’s how:

The Lucozade bombers” – The Guardian opts for branding, although the BBC’s re-enactment of what would have occurred featured bottles of Oasis, which sounds far more exotic.

The liquid bombers” – The Mirror shuns advertising.

Britain’s 9/11” – The Independent doesn’t know when the bombs were to be detonated but needs a date to position the atrocity on the West, as media protocol dictates. Foreign horrors are known by their location: Mumbai Massacre etc.

The plot to kill 10,000” – The Telegraph counts the intended victims

althoguh  the numerbs do differ:

“5,000” – The Sun

“1,500” – The Guardian

GUILTY OF PLOTTING SEVEN LOCKERBIES” – the Sun aims to keep things on-theme by indicating that all seven plans would have been destroyed over Scotland, thus ensuring that any guilty parties would one day be released to a rapturous homecoming in, er, Luton.

The Times goes with the 9/11 angle, and has more facts:

* But it took three years, two lengthy trials, a massive surveillance operation and more than £50 million in police and legal costs…

* Counter-terrorist police, the security services and prosecutors spent more than £35 million foiling the plot and bringing Ali to justice…

Pictures of the plot.

Video Of The 9/11 Non WWF Advert

wwf-9-11THE World Wildlife Fund did not endorse the advert of planes flying into New York and killing thousands of people. It reacted to the stills and the video with a statement, which you can read here.

That advert had nothing to do with the WWF. It was an outright denial. And then we get this:

Sergio Valente, president of DDB Brasil, said the ad was presented to the WWF in Brazil in December 2008 and approved; it then ran once in a small local paper.

“When I saw it, I said, ‘Stop running that ad,'” Mr. Valente said.

Can’t see the client liking that one, much. So we then get this apology, which is the good old fashioned non-denial denial:

After the WWF appeared to initially deny approving the ad, DDB Brasil and the WWF hammered out a statement posted in Portuguese on both groups’ Brazilian websites Wednesday afternoon apologizing for the ad and attributing it to “the inexperience of some professionals on both sides, and not bad faith or disrespect toward American suffering.

Indeed, it was made with the best intentions by professionals. No-one is to blame, but everyone is to praise. This is what ahppens when PR and advertisers collide. you get the trusth wrapped in layer upon layer of ambiguous, sugar-coated, 2-4-1 bilge.

But the best part is yet to come. You know who made the advert? Do you? Well, if you do please tell the agency:

A DDB Brasil spokesperson in Sao Paulo said a video version of the ad being circulated on the internet was not done or authorized by the agency or the client. She said DDB execs first saw the video, which features slightly different copy, on the internet and don’t know who created it.

Right now there are rogue agents, shadowy figures producing adverts. And they are every bit as terrible as the ones being produced by the pros. The WWF might not save face but it should save money…

Jaycee Lee Dugard Lived In Britain

jaycee-tabloid-bingoJAYCEE Lee Dugard – Anorak’s look at Jaycee Dugard in the news: With Baby P, Madeleine McCann, Shannon Matthews, 9/11, Afghanistan, War on Terror, Mumbai Massacre, the Asian tsunami and Sue Carroll…

Lest you think the story of Jaycee Dugard is not relevant to you, dear Britisher, that you are just gawping at suffering and sensation, Sue Carroll sets you straight, and engages in a rich game of Tabolid Bingo. See how many stories you can spot being linked to Our Jaycee:

Daily Mirror: “Who’s to say there isn’t a Jaycee Lee Dugard in Britain?”

How ironic that during Jaycee’s incarceration the world has witnessed terrorist atrocities, disasters and war but missed completely the cruelty inflicted on an innocent little girl locked away in a paedophile’s suburban backyard.

9/11. Mumbai. Tsunami. Iraq. Bing…. Wait for it. Sue Carroll has more:

We know enough about the death of Baby P to recognise no stone must be left unturned when a child’s life is in question.

George Bush’s Legacy Marked In George Clooney Film And Wind Power

BARBRA Streisand says George Bush, whom she had just been kissed by, will be remembered for “the ruination of our country”. And – irony of ironies – “But, he was very disarming…”

Indeed, he was disarming in Iraq and Afghanistan. So Bush is war. Or will Bush be remembered for his environmentalism:

The United States overtook Germany as the biggest producer of wind power last year, new figures showed, and will likely take the lead in solar power this year…

BRITNEY Spears naked, Miley Cyrus naked, Angelina Jolie naked, Israel vs Palestine naked, Joe Swash, iPhone, 9/11 conspiracy, Facebook, MySpace, and Anthea Turner clothed.

There, that should guarantee this column gets oodles of traffic. Thanks to the Guardian’s Aida Edemariam for using that top search fodder in her piece, words also used in frowning Charlie Brooker’s Guardian feature.

Not that Anorak saw it, having spent the past week searching for “Joe Swash pots Nicola McLean” in Paddick’s pocket; McLean being the only women to be snookered by her chest.

Celebrating 9-11 With The UK’s Islamists In Residence

REMEMBERING 9/11 with Britain’s Al-Ghuraba movement.

Over a Ramadan fast breaking dinner, members gathered in London for a conference held under the banner, “The September Attacks: Have You Learned the Lesson?“.

Mad mullah John Lennon fan Omar Bakri was there, albeit live-ish from Beirut via a satellite video link up. Good to see Bakri back. Since his departure, the country has been bereft of a gurning, wire-bearded nutter, a face of Islamic fascism we can all relate to.

Can any among the assembled great and good rise to the challenge and be the new face?
