Robot wars: driverless Uber kills pedestrian

Uber car arizona

To Arizona, where a pedestrian has become the world’s first person killed by an autonomous vehicle. A human was behind the wheel of the Uber cab but the vehicle was self-driving when it hit the walker, reports KNXV. Early news is that the victim was walking outside of the crosswalk. There were no passengers in the Uber. The make a of car? A super-safe Volvo.

Can it be right that experimental technology is operating heavy vehicles that can travel at speed on public roads? And like all accidents, doesn’t this one contains a deep vein of human error?

Would you be happy to ride in an automated car?

Be quick. Here come the robots.

Referee Tony Chapron admits mistake after trying to kick player in Nantes v PSG match

Ligue 1 referee Tony Chapron took a starring role in Nantes’ 0-1 home defeat to PSG on Sunday night. Chapron cut across  Nantes defender Diego Carlos while sprinting after Kylian Mbappe and fell to the ground. He then aimed a kick at Carlos. To put the tin lid on thing, Chapron awarded the blameless Brazilian a second yellow card. He was off.

We have video footage of the incident.

The French Football Federation (FFF) says Chapron will be “withdrawn until further notice” .

Now Chapton has issued an apology, albeit wrapped in a sympathetic backstory. Humility ranks low in his statement to AFP, translated via the BBC:

“During the Nantes-PSG match, I was barged by Nantes player Diego Carlos.”

Victimhood established.  (What happened: You cut across him. Your legs tangled. You were not barged.)

“As a result of the impact, I felt a sharp pain from a recent injury. I reacted badly by moving my leg towards the player.”

Victimhood. Low level acceptance of blame.

“I have sent a report to the (LFP) disciplinary commission so that the [second] booking received by the player can be withdrawn, because having seen the images his action did not seem deliberate.”

Fairness. It did not seem deliberate. But it might have been. (It wasn’t. But your kicking out was.)

The LFP has rescinded the card. Chapron is recovering.

Man shoot self and wife at church debate into gun violence

jesus guns church crime

Thoughts turn to 81-year-old Wayne Reid who while attending a Tennessee church for a “gun-violence at houses of worship” chat, accidentally shot himself and his wife, Kathy, 80. He did so after telling fellow worshippers, “I carry a weapon with me everywhere.”

The man removed the magazine and cleared the chamber to show the pistol to the others. He then reloaded it, put a round in the chamber and put it back in his pocket, Parks said.

When another person asked to see the pistol, the man took it out of his pocket and his finger accidentally hit the trigger. The bullet struck his right hand and then went through his 80-year-old wife’s abdomen and right forearm, according to the police chief.

The man and his wife are at the hospital. Guns in church is an ecumenical matter. “As far as I know, he’ll get to keep it,” says Police Chief Russ Parks. “No one who was in the church is wishing to press charges, and we in the police department think they’ve suffered enough.”

Doctors retrieve 40-year-old toy from patient’s lung

Playmobil man cone

Ever lose a toy when you were a child? Maybe you didn’t lose it. Maybe you’ve been taking it everywhere with you. Doctors have recently removed a plastic traffic cone from a 47-year-old British man’s chest. He got the Playmobil cone for his seventh birthday. And then it vanished.

In later life the man developed a nagging cough. Medical tests revealed a shadow on his lungs. A tumour? No. A small traffic gone he’d swallowed all those years ago.

A cautionary tale, indeed.

And what goes down, can also go up, right. At Bedtime Heaven you can buy an Extreme Cone Butt Plug. If that gets lodged in your insides, tell the doctor it only hurts when he laughs.

How not to handle a tank slapper motorbike crash – but survive (with added Peppa Pig)

Youtuber Erica Hoff shares this video of a motorcyclist having a very bad day.

This guy merged onto the I-80E (Sacramento, CA) on his motorcycle as we were driving in the fast lane. As he merged, his bike would shake and wobble. He sometimes would only have one hand on the handle bars while it was shaking!! We couldn’t figure out why it was shaking, but we noticed it would only do it once he hit high speeds. We paced him for 5-10 miles after watching him “almost” loose control (about 5 or 6 times), so I got my phone out, thinking “its only a matter of time before he crashes” and I wanted the video as evidence in case anyone else got hurt. Sure enough the very moment I get my phone out, happens to be the time he loses control. We pulled over immediately…..called 911, and help the man (and his bike) off to the side of the road as quickly as possible. He did walk over to the right shoulder by himself. His face was really mashed up (his nose looked broken) and arms covered in blood. Crazy road rash!!! I still wonder how he’s doing 🙁

Oh, and the sirens you hear in the background aren’t because he’s being chased by the cops….my kids were watching peppa pig… was just a coincidence 😉

This is called a tank slapper. Nasty.

Canary Islands ferry tests out sea defences by ramming sea wall

How do you test sea defences? In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, you set the ferry to ramming speed and go for it:

Videos and photos of the accident appeared quite serious, although no injuries have been reported.

The ship involved was the Volcan de Tamasite and, according to information received by The Canary, 140 passengers were on board at the time, though nobody seems to have been seriously hurt, some reports have mentioned up to four people with minor injuries.

Looking at the state of the wall inspires little confidence.

Matador gored in the anus gives thumbs up and eyes return to the ring

When Matador Antonio Romero was impaled on a bull’s horn at a bullfight in Mexico City, we all winced. The bull’s horn went straight up Romero’s backside. News emerging from Mexico is that Matador Romero’s anus is “completely destroyed”.

thumbs up bullfighter anus

See you in the ring

Does it hurt? Only when he laughs – the Press is having no little sport with Antonio’s destroyed anus. The Mail says he’s looking forward to “getting back into the ring”. No. Not the bull. Antonio.

“BULLSEYE,” cheers the Daily Star alongside a photo of Matador Romero becoming a novelty horn ornament. “A bull sticks its horn right up matador Antonio Romero’s backside.”

But the matador’s on the mend. “I have faith and hope to feel again and show that I want to be someone important in the Fiesta Brava,” Antonio tells the Daily Star.

Right now, though, Antonio is like so many bulls bred for bullfighting: he’s well-and truly f*****.

Mother gets ‘keepsake’ vibrator stuck up her anus

Emma Phillips, Wallasey, Wirral, is the trainee teacher who got a large dildo stuck in her anus (?). This is no secret. Emma has not been exposed or outed in some way. She wants to tell us all about her “embarrassing” accident because it is a “taboo” we need to be warned about.

She’s told her story to Mercury Press, who have sold it to the Daily Mirror. How you prove the story of the vanishing viby is a moot point. Emma just wants to tell us about it. And we are all ears.

And no giggling as “Emma offers a thumbs up from her hospital bed”. Let’s hope she washes it first and removed any false fingernails.

women with dildo stuck in vagina

One day her child will get to read about the tale of “Mum-of-one Emma Phillips”, her partner Lee Miller, 29, and the the 7 inch sex toy that “disappeared”.

Highlights are:

When she leaned forward she could feel it vibrating inside her bottom wedged behind her hip.

Lee tried to extract the toy with a fork handle and BBQ prongs before calling for an ambulance.

In Wrexham hospital Emma underwent the “minute-and-a-half surgery which involved placing a camera down her throat and the surgeon pressing on her stomach before manually extracting i”.

And “Doctors offered her the toy as a keepsake but she decline”.

Next week: I got a BBQ stuck inside my vagina.

Woman comes out of coma when medic accinbally touches her toe

When its the right time to switch off the machines keeping a patient alive? On July 20, Sam Hemming, 22, a Bangor University graduate and keen sportswoman, was a passenger in her boyfriend’s car when it crashed on the M6. The car flipped over. Sam Hemming banged her head hard on the window.

sam hemming

At hospital, after six hours of operations doctors placed the badly injured woman in a coma. They told her parents Emma had no chance of recovery. For 19 days she showed no sign of brain activity. They were all set to tun off the life-support machines when Emma’s toe moved when a staff member inadvertently brushed it with an ice-cold wipe.

“The computer showed some brain activity,” Ms Hemming’s mother, Carol, tells the Times. “It was amazing. She would have had the heat and cold test before they switched the machine off but they brushed it across her toe earlier than expected and it saved her.”

Eight weeks later Emma returned to her parents’ Hereford home. She has learnt to talk and walk.

“Doctors are totally in shock,” Mrs Hemming adds. “You see the specialist surgeons, paramedics and police and they look at Sammy and their mouths fall open. Why her condition is different is that part of the brain has developed her speech and movement. That is why all the neurosurgeons were getting so excited as it is very rarely seen. She is a walking miracle.”

Says Emma: “My talking is fine and I just want to get better now. Before the accident I wanted to be a solicitor and that ambition hasn’t changed. I still want a career in the law.”

Medicine is amazing. (The legal profession, less so.)

IKEA balls: customer who said he got testicles caught in stool comes clean

When news broke that Claus Jorstad had got a testicle trapped in an IKEA stool, he laughed. “Haha, part of the story is a lie,” he tells Altaposten. “What is true and less true I won’t go into here.”

It was his penis that got trapped as he sat on the stool in the shower?

IKEA testicles stool

Passing a stool

“I sat there and discovered all of a sudden that stool use could have unfortunate consequences for a man,” says Jorstad. “So decided to warn Ikea about what potentially could happen in future.”

Thanks, Claus, for the public service announcement. Others have been even more selfless, like herhimhim and him. And mind out in the hardware ssection:

Dr. Kevin Klauer, an E.R. doc based in Canton, Ohio, still remembers the day he dealt with a patient who was trying to fix his roof when he fell off and impaled himself on a shovel. You can see the shovel sticking out of what appears to be the rectal area. Even when you’ve seen a lot of bad injuries, this is really a cringe moment. Turning somebody to examine them while they have a shovel impaled in their rectum is not something anyone’s been trained to do. You have to work as a team.”

IKEA is not for everyone. Take care in there.

Firefighters cover wrong plane in foam ignoring burning jet

The good new is that the jet next to the one on fire is now covered in protective foam. The less good news is that the Air China jet sat smouldering on the runway at Fuzhou Changle airport continues to burn.

The right-hand engine of a Boeing 737, Air China Flight CA1822 to Beijing caught fire at around 8am. Crew on the plane behind, Fuzhou Airlines FU6577, spotted the flames and notified the Air China captain. The Air China aircraft closed down the engine and then called fightfighters.

Eight fire trucks arrived. They surrounded the Fuzhou Airlines aircraft and sprayed foam all over it. They then noticed the burning Air China aircraft.

You have nothing to worry about.

Politician wants pedestrians to give drivers the finger when crossing roads

road crossing

In the drawer marked ‘What could go wrong?’ we find Norm Kelly, Councillor for the City of Toronto, Canada. He wants pedestrians to give motorists the finger while crossing the road.

Kelly wants walkers to extend their arms and using their index fingers point in the direction they want to walk when using crosswalks. At which point the driver will see the walker, wonder what they are pointing at and turn their heads to see. The walker will step into the road and get a closer look at the car crash.

Says Kelly:

“Three per cent of pedestrian injuries and fatalities in Toronto occur at marked crosswalks. This is a statistic which could be significantly reduced if pedestrians make the effort to point, pause then proceed. Getting the attention of motorists before crossing the street eliminates the possibility of a collision.”

With them, yes. With other cars, shop windows, cyclists and walkers not trying to cross the road, the jury’s out.

TransAsia ATR 72-600 death toll is a sign of God’s love, miracles and destiny

When a passenger plane crashes anywhere in the world the news is delivered in facts: flight number; number of passengers; the dead; the survivors; and departure time.

Soon after the talk turns to the black box flight recorder. Will it tell us what really happened?

And so it is for TransAsia ATR 72-600, which yesterday crashed shortly after take-off from Songshan airport in northern Taipei, striking an elevated road as it banked sidelong towards the Keelung River.

It was captured on camera.

So much for the facts. What about the stories?

The Toronto Sun makes it sound like a moment of childlike joy:

At least 23 dead as Taiwan plane cartwheels into river after take-off 134
