Firefighters cover wrong plane in foam ignoring burning jet

Safe

Safe

The good new is that the jet next to the one on fire is now covered in protective foam. The less good news is that the Air China jet sat smouldering on the runway at Fuzhou Changle airport continues to burn.

The right-hand engine of a Boeing 737, Air China Flight CA1822 to Beijing caught fire at around 8am. Crew on the plane behind, Fuzhou Airlines FU6577, spotted the flames and notified the Air China captain. The Air China aircraft closed down the engine and then called fightfighters.

Eight fire trucks arrived. They surrounded the Fuzhou Airlines aircraft and sprayed foam all over it. They then noticed the burning Air China aircraft.

You have nothing to worry about.

Politician wants pedestrians to give drivers the finger when crossing roads

road crossing

In the drawer marked ‘What could go wrong?’ we find Norm Kelly, Councillor for the City of Toronto, Canada. He wants pedestrians to give motorists the finger while crossing the road.

Kelly wants walkers to extend their arms and using their index fingers point in the direction they want to walk when using crosswalks. At which point the driver will see the walker, wonder what they are pointing at and turn their heads to see. The walker will step into the road and get a closer look at the car crash.

Says Kelly:

“Three per cent of pedestrian injuries and fatalities in Toronto occur at marked crosswalks. This is a statistic which could be significantly reduced if pedestrians make the effort to point, pause then proceed. Getting the attention of motorists before crossing the street eliminates the possibility of a collision.”

With them, yes. With other cars, shop windows, cyclists and walkers not trying to cross the road, the jury’s out.

TransAsia ATR 72-600 death toll is a sign of God’s love, miracles and destiny

When a passenger plane crashes anywhere in the world the news is delivered in facts: flight number; number of passengers; the dead; the survivors; and departure time.

Soon after the talk turns to the black box flight recorder. Will it tell us what really happened?

And so it is for TransAsia ATR 72-600, which yesterday crashed shortly after take-off from Songshan airport in northern Taipei, striking an elevated road as it banked sidelong towards the Keelung River.

It was captured on camera.

So much for the facts. What about the stories?

The Toronto Sun makes it sound like a moment of childlike joy:

At least 23 dead as Taiwan plane cartwheels into river after take-off 134

Trucker pulling his own tooth caused dramatic accident

truck tooth

Next time just don’t wear a seatbelt:

The accident, which happened just before 10:30pm, was caused when a self-employed tractor trailer driver took his hands off the wheel to pull a loose tooth from his mouth. “The driver stated he lost control when he was pulling a tooth with his hands,” the report reads.

“He had the tooth in his shirt pocket as proof.” The truck left the roadway, travelled down the slope leading into a ditch then jack-knifed into nearby trees, according to the report.

It sounds like a great way to loose your teeth…

How to Survive A Helicopter Crash: grab the clip and don’t let go

In Airspace Mag you can learn How to Survive A Helicopter Crash. The simplest way, of course, is never to get inside a helicopter. I once took a trip to an oil rig. After a spot of training, in which you slide down a chute into a deep swimming pool, get tipped upside down and around before punching the release clip on your safety belt and wriggling free, you get to fly.

Yep, exactly, the old hands press the releases clip as soon as trouble looms. And once aboard the helicopter you soon learn that the old hands invite you sit in the middle of the seats rows – furthest from the doors. You then spend an hour or longer with a hand on your own clip, like they do. You know, in case.

James R. Chiles:

At least a quarter-million people have passed through helicopter escape schools worldwide, mostly as part of offshore-oil employment. The degree of realism (and stress level) varies from school to school, as does the equipment. Why the focus on rotorcraft? Helicopters fly lower and slower than airliners, so when they hit the water, their cabins are usually intact enough to trap people inside. And because the heavy machinery (engines, transmission, and main rotor) is up high, helicopters tend to roll over quickly.

Over five decades, dozens of military and oil field transports have crashed in the water with passengers, and of the deaths that resulted, drowning has been a common cause. In one eight-year span, two big transport helicopters crashed into English waters, killing 74.

Manchester Smoker ‘Blown Up’ In Hospital: Tobacco Safer Than Digital Ciggies

PAUL KEAVENY has news of Jean Booth, known to tabloid readers as “e-cigarette grandma Jean Booth”.

 Screen shot 2014-04-14 at 08.36.41

“Heavy-smoker” Jean was in Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital for a hip operation when the oxygen supply she was using to ease her breathing caught fire. He head and face were badly burnt. She is “fighting for life”.

Terrible. Did the e-Gigs ‘blow her up’?

Further down the story we get facts:

“…an investigation tried to discover whether an e-cigarette found near her was responsible for the blaze.”

A relative adds:

“Now Jean is a smoker, don’t get me wrong. She’s been in and out of hospital for the past two years but she has never ever attempted to light a cigarette in there. She has never done that.”

Smoking tobacco is terrible for your health, but it’s better than being blown up.

Nurse Nancy Lennox smilingly lights a cigarette for James Blair as he lies in bed today (Sunday) at Bangor Hospital, County Down, Northern Ireland, after being rescued from the disaster to the British Transport Commission's MV Princess Victoria (2,694 tons). The ship foundered in a severe gale five miles off the County Down coast with the loss of over 130 lives. There were about 170 persons aboard.

Irish Bomber Blows Himself Up: Forgot About Putting His Clock Forward

dublin bomb idiot

THE Telegraph has the headline that we can all take a minute to appreciate:

Irish bomber blew himself up after device went off too soon ‘because he forgot to put his watch forward’

Our hero had placed a bomb beneath a Volvo SUV. Kaboom!

The suspected bomber was seen fleeing the area in Dublin with “blood dripping down his face” .

A police source told the Mirror:

“This certainly was a high-grade explosive used in this bomb. It wasn’t garbage stuff. It would appear the bomber got his timings wrong. It could be a case where he didn’t put his watch forward on Sunday and the timer went off too soon. If anyone had been in the car or walking near it at the time then they would have been killed.”

Supt Dave Taylor ads, lest the most simple fact escape us, as it seems to have escaped the cretinous villain:

“It is quite obvious that the car was the object of this attack.”

The owner of the vehicle, a local businessman, has offered no comment.
