Arsenal’s £80m ‘blunder’ that let Suarez wallow at Liverpool

Arsenal were beaten by Barcelona in last night’s Champions League match. The result never was really in doubt. Arsenal are a decent side, who could have nicked a goal; Barcelona shimmer. Over in the Daily Mail, Arsenal obsessive Adrian Durham tells readers about Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s “biggest blunder” in a coruscating carer. It was not buying Louis Suarez, now starring for Barcelona:

“What a blunder from Wenger. [He] gets a tip off that Luis Suarez has a £40m release clause in his contract, decides to offer £1 more than that figure to trigger the release, fails to realise the player needs persuading to move to Arsenal.”

The tip-off was sound.

“In a million years, will a player who values himself highly just walk out on one club failing to compete for the very top honours, to join another club failing to compete for the very top honours, simply because that new club values him just £1 more than his release clause?”

No. That’s not what happened. This is what Luis Suarez said about Arsenal’s bid for him in August 2013, which you can also read in the Mail:

“Last year I had the opportunity to move to a big European club and I stayed on the understanding that if we failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season I’d be allowed to go. I gave absolutely everything last season but it was not enough to give us a top-four finish – now all I want is for Liverpool to honour our agreement. I am 26, I need to be playing in the Champions League. I feel I have done enough to be playing in the Champions League at this stage of my career. Now there is an option for me to do that and I want very much to take it.”

Durham ignores the facts. But he does offer some advice for whatever fee the Mail pays him:

Some Gooners have defended Wenger on this one, but ultimately he had the chance, but failed to sign a player who would have transformed Arsenal overnight. Offer £80m – what he’s worth – make the player feel truly wanted.

Pay double the asking price. Genius!

Arsenal Balls: Adrian Durham Is Shouting At Pigeons

THE Daily Mail’s Adrian Durham continues his routine attack on Arsenal with a tour de force. Ignoring facts – many of which are stated in his own paper – Durham focuses on three Arsenal players involved for Germany in the World Cup final. Rumours that Durham rehearses his columns by sitting in the shopping   precinct and shouting them at pigeons cannot be ruled out.

This week’s highlights are:

The FA Cup gave the fans a great day out, but seeing Arsenal players win the World Cup is a reality check for Gooners who are letting Wenger get away with it.

After waiting all this time they should demand more. And in fairness to Gooners they do want more. In fact they are so desperate for more, they have hijacked Germany’s World Cup success as some sort of trophy for Arsenal.

Andros Townsend Watch: better than Bale and Lennon, the Spurs legend made Arsenal buy Ozil

PA-16001988

ANDROS Townsend Watch: the Spurs winger is being hailed as the greatest England prospect since…well, the last one. One match and he’s a superstar. In the Mail, Adrian Durham has more to say:

Does Andros Townsend really need a huge pay rise? Does he deserve one? He’s had a decent start to the season and very good game for England and now Spurs are apparently ready to hike up his wages.
I can only hope money doesn’t change him because he seems like a decent lad from a good family.

From a good family? Is Durham now a godly social worker?

One question remains though: Roy Hodgson said Townsend really caught his eye on loan at QPR last season. Makes you wonder doesn’t it? If AVB had more faith in Townsend and kept him at Tottenham, they might have made the top four. And Ozil would never have joined Arsenal. What a massive mistake.

Spurs: Andre Villas Boas and Gareth Bale owe it all to Harry Redknapp?

HOW much does Spurs wonderboyo Gareth Bale owe Harry Redknapp? Bale is having a fantastic season. He’s a match winner whose getting better. Redknapp didn’t sign him for Spurs from his old club Southampton (corrected). Martin Jol did. Adrian Durham tells Daily Mail readers:

“There are some Spurs fans who refuse to credit Harry Redknapp. Instead they point to Harry’s alleged wish to send Bale out on loan.”
