Daily Express never forgets Alzheimer’s: Grapes fight memory loss (in rats)

The Daily Express explains to its readers why they can no longer recall why they buy ‘the world’s greatest newspaper’ and fail to spot the same stories appearing year after year on its cover: they lost their grapes.

grapes

Inside the paper, this front-page news becomes: “Red wine and peanuts can help boost your memory say scientists.”

RED grapes have emerged as key in the battle to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, research shows.

The Express has a keen interest in Alzheimer’s, the illness featuring on its front page 14 times in 2014. Back then readers were told that coffee, spicy food and drugs ‘BEAT’ Alzheimer’s. Now it’s grapes.

As readers set about replacing the sugar in their mug of coffee with two spoons of chicken vindaloo and a glug of Thunderbird, the Express notes:

Scientists have discovered that the fruit – found in a daily glass of red wine – and peanuts both contain a wonder anti-oxidant called resveratrol.

The compound, which protects cells against damage and helps prevent age-related mental decline, also mops up chemicals responsible for causing blood clots – the primary cause of coronary disease. Experiments showed that giving older rats the compound led to apparent improvements in learning, memory and mood.

Back to that front-page headline, which now reads:

GRAPES FIGHT MEMORY LOSS IN RATS

The story adds:

The research said resveratrol may even be able to help people afflicted with severe neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s, for which there is no cure.

And that’s from the Express, which told us:

But so long as you Express-reading rats have not eaten your grapes, you won’t remember any of that…

78-year-old prosecuted for having sex with his Alzheimer’s afflicted wife

henry rayhonsBest hurry with that Alzheimer’s cure:

An Iowa state lawmaker says he loved visiting his wife at a nursing home before her death at age 79. But prosecutors have filed felony charges against him, saying that her Alzheimer’s made her unable to consent to his sexual desires… Henry Rayhons, 78, now out on a $10,000 bond, has declined to run for a 10th straight term in the state House, saying his reputation is ruined.. “My wife just died and you’re charged with something like this because you prayed by her bed,” he says, sobbing. “It hurts. It really hurts.”..

The daughters had Donna placed in the home, where Rayhons visited often and wanted sex once or twice daily, one of the daughters said. “Henry likes this a lot,” Donna reportedly said while pointing between her legs, and staffers were said to be “sickened.” Rayhons was given a physician-approved document saying that Donna couldn’t consent to sex, but he allegedly continued and may have admitted as much to a state investigator. “It was not a regular thing,” Rayhons told him, saying he “never touched her when she didn’t want it and I only tried to fulfill her need when she asked for it.” Iowa state law doesn’t help him, stating that sex with a permanently mentally ill lover is illegal unless that person “is both a spouse and cohabiting,” the Post notes. Charged with third-degree sexual abuse, Rayhons is scheduled to begin his trial on Jan. 28 in Garner.

Faces of The Day: John O’Keefe Might Prevents The Alzheimer’s Horror

PA-21114947

FACES of the day:

Joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine professor John O’Keefe, a dual U.S. and British citizen, laughs as he is interviewed by The Associated Press in an office he uses at the University College London (UCL), in London, Monday, Oct. 6, 2014. The U.S.-British scientist and a Norwegian husband-and-wife research team won the Nobel Prize in medicine Monday for discovering the brain’s navigation system -— the inner GPS that helps us find our way in the world -— a revelation that one day could help those with Alzheimer’s. The research by John O’Keefe, May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser represents a “paradigm shift” in neuroscience that could help researchers understand the sometimes severe spatial memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s disease, the Nobel Assembly said. Who says Mars Bars can Cure Alzheimer’s?

DID you know that chocolate can stop dementia? The Daily Express leads with Jo Willey’s report. We are told:

A daily does of cocoa could be the secret to halting Alzheimer’s, researchers claim.

That front-page headline looks a little shaky, no?

Scientists have found that the potent ingredient in chocolate can dramatically improve cognitive impairment. Experts say pensioners should have some cocoa every day in a bid to keep dementia and Alzheimer’s at bay.The key lies in health-boosting flavanols which are abundant in the sweet treat.
