Audrey Barfield Emerges From The Toxic Soup

There will be a film made about Audrey Barfield, who led the battle to prove that her son Dylan was poisoned by an “atmospheric soup of toxic materials” created by the redevelopment of Corby’s former steel works between 1985 and 1999.

What was once Western Europe’s biggest steel works shut in 1980. The council contested the notion of a link between renovation work and the disabilities endured by 18 young people. It lost.

Says Audrey Barfield: “I am over the moon, absolutely over the moon.

Her son Dylan South endured medical treatment every day for the first five years of his life.

I found out that his foot was all bent over. He had two operations, and it wasn’t until he was older that we realised that his leg was already a lot shorter, but we didn’t realise the affect it was going to have on his whole leg…

“When he goes through his growth spurts he’s getting a lot of pain. It’s just wait and see, we still don’t know how it’s going to affect him as an adult.”

For ten years she fought he case.

“You don’t know the whole technicality of it, there are scientific reports and you don’t really understand it so it’s just what you can pick up. It’s just been a waiting game.”

And now she’s won. Compensation should run into millions. The poisoned will not be made well by the money, but they will have less worries…

Note: Anorak is not one for emoting but that picture is almost unbearably touching…
