Environmentalists Warned Australia Of Floods: Others Warned Of Drought

BIG bits of Australia are under water. And the environmentalists told you it would happen. They warned you of the coming flood. Well, maybe not the ones who lobbied for the desalination plant over the damn, but lots did warn of a flood.

Get a load of this from Ian Lowe, head of the Australian Conservation Foundation:

The Queensland floods are another reminder of what climate science has been telling us for 25 years, like the recent long-running drought, the 2009 heatwaves and the dreadful Victorian bushfires. As well as a general warming, increasing sea levels and altered rainfall patterns, climate modellers confidently predicted more frequent extreme events: floods, droughts, heatwaves and severe bushfires.

Jordan Rice Is The Unbearable Face Of The Australian Floods

JORDAN Rice is the face of the floods that have killed tens of people and ruined lives in Australia. In Toowoomba’s flooded high street, Jordan Rice is with his brother Blake and mother Donna. They are stranded. They are on the roof of their car.

A truck driver arrives. He ties a rope to himself. He dives in. He saves Blake. Jordan and Donna take the rope. The rope breaks. Jordan and his mother are swept long. They clamber onto a tree. Jordan cannot hang on. His mother lets go to try and save him. Both drown.

John Tyson is father to Jordan Rice and his three brothers. He’s been Donna’s partner for 30 years. He calls her the “love of my life”.

“(The truck driver) went to grab Jordan first, who said, ‘Save me brother’. I can only imagine the fear coursing through his body,” Mr Tyson, 46, said.

“He won’t go down with any fanfare or anything like that – I don’t think anyone will even wear a black armband for him – but he’s just the champion of all champions, a family hero.”

How The Greens Made The Australian Floods Worse

DID the Green Shirts make the floods in Australia worse?

POSTED originally on the comments to Booker’s column, Dellers has picked up a contribution from “Memory Vault” who lives in Queensland and, with increasing concern, is watching the devastation that has so far claimed more than 70 lives, writes Richard North.

But the issue here – as it was with the horrendous bush fires in Victoria in 2009, is that the disaster could by and large have been prevented, or the effects reduced, but for Greenie intervention. And two individuals are particularly in the frame, the first being environment minister Peter Garrett, who took it upon himself to block a proposed dam that would have prevented it flooding the town of Gympie.

But “Memory Vault” particularly condemns a second individual, Tim Flannery, a professor of earth and life sciences at Macquarie University, chair of the Copenhagen Climate Council, and the 2007 Australian of the Year. It is he, above all, he has managed to convince the state government that the predicable cycle of droughts and floods will no longer happen, and that the state, instead of beefing up defences from the last major event 30 years ago in 1974, should prepare for long-term water shortages.

The Ashes: Sour Aussies Gladden English Hearts With Bitter Chant

THE fifth Ashes Test and England are thrashing Australia…again. This is getting to be a habit. One thing has changed, though: Australia have two songs. The usual song is a cub-scout-style “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, oi, oi!”. The new one – Song 2 – says:

“Four Saffers in your team! You’ve got four Saffers in tour team…”

Australian Boat Tragedy: Let’s Blame The Navy

CAN the Australians be blamed for the deaths of 28 mainly Iranian and Iraqi asylum-seekers who died when their boat from Indonesia foundered on rocks off Flying Fish Cove , Christmas Island? Or should the regimes they flee be examined and the people smugglers who profit from pain?

The Independent knows. It leads with:

“Australia’s hardline refugee policy was blamed for the deaths of at least 27 asylum-seekers whose boat was dashed on rocks…”

But wouldn’t a looser policy encourage more people to try to reach Oz by boat? And wouldn’t that lead to move deaths?

In an alternative world we may praise the Australian Navy whose personnel put their own lives on the line to save 41 people from “waters so rough that volunteers standing on the 100ft cliffs were soaked in ocean spray”.

Toni Collette Works To Kill The Australian Accent

4395472ACTRESS Toni Collette, the American accented mum of The Sixth Sense, is the star of new US series United States of Tara – “Collette plays Tara, a married mother of two who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID), commonly known as multiple personalities.”

The US show is to preview in Australia soon. So what says you, Toni Collette, in 2004?

We don’t want Australian kids to grow up with American accents. We don’t want a country of clones wondering why their world is so different from the one they watch on TV or see at the movies. And that’s what will happen if we allow our screens to be dominated by American product. We have to prevent a diet of vacuous American fodder, which will spoil their, and in turn, our true potential.

Giant Kangaroos Not Wiped Out By Climate Change

giant-kangarooCLIMATE change is not behind the demise of the Procoptodon goliah, the giant kanagroo. No, it turns out that it was the big roo’s enmies what done for it:

It stood tall at 6’5, weighed over 500lbs, had the face of a koala and the body of a sturdy kangaroo. And apparently it was delicious.

Scientists think they have discovered the reason behind the demise of the prehistoric Australian marsupial Procoptodon goliah – better known as the giant, short-snouted kangaroo. They say it was not climate change, as has always been assumed, but hungry Ice Age hunters.

That’s the thing with the media and bad science-  climate change is always assumed…

Of course, transvestites are not the same as transsexuals, and Will ‘Power’, who was born a woman and had a sex change two years ago, dreams of playing for Collingwood. But first, he’s aiming for the Bendigo Football League.
