Watch Bob Dylan’s TV Singing Debut In The Madhouse on Castle Street

PA-8661116

IN January 1963, an unknown young Bob Dylan got some work in a (now lost) BBC play The Madhouse on Castle Street. He sings The Ballad of the Gliding Swan. The Sunday night play also features Dylan’s first televised performance of Blowin’ in the Wind.

He was paid a fee of 500 guineas to play the role of Bobby.

* While in London, Dylan stayed with Martin Carthy, who helped introduce him to the burgeoning folk club circuit and who remembers chopping up a piano for firewood to counter the effects of that long cold winter. Dylan became a regular figure on the folk scene and even found the time to cut an LP in a record shop on Charing Cross Road, under the pseudonym of Blind Boy Grunt.

Dylan’s stay also resulted in a burst of original songs (Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright, Bob Dylan’s Dream) which were heavily influenced by his exposure to traditional English folk music.

How would John Lennon & Bob Dylan fare on The Voice?

PEOPLE who sneer at shows like The X Factor and The Voice often wonder how singers of the past would fare. Would Screamin’ Jay Hawkins get Simon Cowell’s approval? Would someone like Nina Simone stand a chance against Olly Murs if it all went to deadlock?

The fact of the matter is, no-one should really care because the 60s were a completely different time where record companies had loads of money to take loads of chances and, most importantly, X Factor is to music what WWE is to sport – it’s just telly!

Either way, over in the States, The Voice USA have made a video where John Lennon and Bob Dylan appear… and you know something? It’s funny than 99% of the jibes spat out by detractors!

Bob Dylan takes a shower with Jonah Lehrer, who gets an early bath

THE Johann Hari School of Journalism calls New Yorker staff writer Jonah Lehrer. He’s the author of Imagine: How Creativity Works. In that book, Bob Dylan takes a shower and tells Lehrer:

“‘It’s a hard thing to describe. ‘It’s just this sense that you got something to say.’”

Lehrer analysed it:

Quite Obvious Former Smackhead, Bob Dylan, Admits He Used To Take Heroin

TAKE one look at Bob Dylan – who just happens to be celebrating his 70th birthday tomorrow, despite looking and sounding like a 70 year old since around 1964 – and you think, there’s a man who used to like bags of heroin disappearing up his puny arms.

Even the photographs of him in his youth look like he was a smackhead. Of course he was! Just about every singer in the ’60s and ’70s was strung out on the horse at some point!

In Pictures: Hop Farm Festival 2010

DEBBIE Harry of Blondie and Dr John were the big acts at the Hop Farm Festival, Paddock Wood, Kent. Before Madonna and Lady GaGa, there was Debbie Harry, siren of teenaged bedroom walls. Also on the bill of what looks like a real ale festival: Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Ray Davies, Mumford & Sons, Peter Doherty, Laura Marling and The Magic Numbers, and Seasick Steve…

Kate Garraway’s Superman Baby And Derek Draper’s Four Leaf Clover

7575650GMTV’s “lovely” Kate Garraway and husband Derek Draper would like to present her “BABY BOY BILLY” to OK! readers. But take care with the little love, because as Kate says:

“WE LOST BILLY’S HEARTBEAT FOR THREE MINUTES.”

Had it slipped own the back of the GMTV sofa? Had Derek Draper, Kate’s charming husband, blogged about it?

“At one point the baby was very active and wriggling around and slipped to the back of my back which meant the midwife suddenly couldn’t hear his heartbeat.”

So she moved the stethoscope to your back and found it..?

“It was only for three minutes but to me it felt like an hour and I just thought, oh God.”

But Billy Draper is special. Having survived that trauma, he now hears dad Derek Draper explains just how special Billy is:

“When he came out, the midwives were like: ‘Ooh, there’s a knot in the umbilical cord! Apparently it’s just finding a four leaf clover.”

Albeit a four leaf clover covered in blood with a baby on one end, an ex-Labour blogger in the middle and a GMTV presenter with legs akimbo at its root. Best not to pick it. Leave it to the Red Rag experts, like Derek:

“Anyway I cut the cord with scissors and kept them as a reminder.”
