Casual anti-Semitism creeps into a Times story on BBC pay: Claudia Winkleman and Vanessa Feltz are Jews

Kevin Myers writes in the Sunday Times:

I note that two of the best-paid women presenters in the BBC — Claudia Winkleman and Vanessa Feltz, with whose, no doubt, sterling work I am tragically unacquainted — are Jewish.

Good for them. Jews are not generally noted for their insistence on selling their talent for the lowest possible price, which is the most useful measure there is of inveterate, lost-with-all-hands stupidity.

I wonder, who are their agents? If they’re the same ones that negotiated the pay for the women on the lower scales, then maybe the latter have found their true value in the marketplace.

Ouch. How did that one slip past the editors?

Update: The Times online has removed the article.

PS: the Jewish Chronicle notes:

When the BBC reported on its list of highest-paid broadcasters on its News at Ten last night, it said there was no one from an ethnic background in the top 20.

Which was wrong (well, wrong depending on your definition of ethnic minority). For the top 20 included two Jewish women – Claudia Winkleman and Vanessa Feltz.

The Strictly Come Dancing presenter has since issued a statement:

“Our daughter was involved in an accident on Friday night while celebrating Halloween. She is having the best care possible and we are hopeful of a full recovery. We would like to thank everyone that has been so supportive and particularly the NHS doctors, nurses and staff who have been absolutely incredible. We would like to take this opportunity to remind anyone taking part in fireworks parties or Guy Fawkes celebrations to be vigilant about the dangers of candles, open fires and fireworks and to be please have the appropriate safety measures in place and to hand.”

Sony Radio Awards: BBC Wins And Loses And Frankie Sanford’s Washing Tattoo

Sony Radio Awards: FRANKIE Sandford’s harness tattoo says “Sunshine and Showers”. Is this a promise to anyone reading the thing up close as they take it to “Maidenhead” with Amanda Holden?

At the prize giving, BBC 6 Music and BBC Asian Network won three gold Sony Radio Awards on Monday night. Yep, the two stations the BBC has earmarked for closure. Oh, how terrifically embarrassing for the Beeb.

Well, not really. Aside form the Rising Star award, which is voted for by the public, the other gongs are voted for by judges appointed by the Radio Academy, including Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt and former Blur bassist Alex James. Yeah, a radio awards show that voted for two earmarked-for-the-chop stations to win top prizes. What are the odds, eh?

Paloma Faith, Kevin Spacey And Other Liggers Launch The Samsung 3D Tell: Pictures

WITH the wondrous Paloma Faith to the Samsung 3D LED TV launch at the Saatchi Gallery in London. Because a telly is art. Well, no. It’s a telly. Also there to watch the telly were Alexandra Burke, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Tamara Ecclestone (what colour is she – we say ‘Tuscan slate’), Zoe Salmon, Hofit Golan, Claudia Winkleman, Laura Bailey, Chelsea FC’s Florent Malouda and for reason no-one can fatham Kevin Spacey…

In Pictures: Pamela Anderson Vibrates, Vivienne Westwood’s Elizabeth I Impression And Charlie Brooker Goes Native At British Comedy Awards 2009

Vivienne Westwood and Pamela Anderson at the British Comedy Awards 2009 at London Television Studios. Westwood does her impression of Queen Elizabeth I.

THE British Comedy Awards 2009, that AGM for funny men and the odd funny woman, is an odd thing where the rebels, those sayers and doers of things “out of the box”, “left field” and way cray-zee arrive on stage to collect an award. Like all awards do, these are awards for media compliancy, for being acceptably funny and funny enough to be on the telly.

And they came to chuckle: Vivienne Westwood went for visual gags with her Quene Elizabeth I impression, Pamela Anderson raised a smile, Griff Rhys Jones, Ash Attalla, Beth Cordingly, a child with a descriptive funny name – Tyger Drew Honey – Keith Allen, Tom Felton, Rob Brydon, Claudia Winkleman, Peter Capaldi , Lee Majors and his wife Faith, Pixie Lott, funny looking Katie Price, Steve Benham, Leigh Francis, critic gone native Charlie Brooker, Sir Terry Wogan, Simon Bird, the great Harry Hill, Joe Calzaghe and Kristina Rihanoff, Alice Beer, Davina McCall, Jane Goldman, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Armando Iannucci, John Thomson, Paul Kaye, Jack Dee and comedy singing act JLS all battled whether to go for the GQ cover pose (suit, tie and serious face) or jaunty jig pose?

And everyone laughed and laughed and lauged until their heads fell off…
