CORONATION Street actress Susan Cleaver stands before the Beak at Manchester City Magistrates Court, and is banned from driving for 17 months after drink-driving.
Yeah, who’s Susan Cleaver? She’s the actress, who plays likeable lioness Eileen Grimshaw – the taxi operator!

She’s introduced herself to the media at large in traditional fashion. Cleaver was driving a Land Rover Freelander when she was pulled over by police less than a mile from her home in Northenden, Greater Manchester, in the early hours of Monday March 29.

In Pictures: The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile Is Golden

THE Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile, on Victoria Embankment in central London, was people running a mile for charity. This is the kind if distance Britain once ruled the world in. But Seb Coe now wears a suit and the Golden Mile is best left to such athletes as former Rolling Stones shagger Jo Wood, pro-am “Paki” dancer Anton Du Beke, Lyvita lady Fern Britton, Eddie Izzard, polo for commoners champion Jodie Kidd, F1 heiress Tamara Ecclestone, eyebrow wrangler Lizzie Cundy, sop actors from Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Eastenders and Mr “If he loses the electisn we are f*****” David Cameron.

No, not John Terry and Ashley Cole. It’s not that kind of sports relief. This is the day for those celebs who realise that marathons should be best left to Ethiopians and the Mile is what makes Great Britain Great…

Coronation Street: Maggie Jones’ Memorial Service Scene In Pictures

CORONATION Street actress Maggie Jones was the subject of a memorial service at Salford Cathedral. Jones died in December 2009. She remains in the soap, albeit visiting a friend. How long can Maggie keep acting? Tracey Lurve famously went to her bedroom as a quiet, well-adjusted child from a broken home. She emerged some years later as a festering sore, a being turned rotten by having no human contact with anyone except a tobacco-stained woman whose idea of living it oop was squinting at Mike Baldwin’s factory ceiling through ocular club boots. Maggie Jones RIP – wait for your cue…

Madeleine McCann: Coronation Street’s Simon Missing And Amaral’s Trial

mccanns-birthday21MADDIE WATCH – Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann: Portugal, Amaral, libel and Coronation Street:

IN Portugal, Kate and Gerry McCann’s legal action against Goncalo Amaral will last three days. As the disappearance of an innocent child became a form of entertainment, a brand for PRs and speculation, Amaral penned Maddie: The Truth Of The Lie, in which he claimed that Madeleine died in her family’s holiday flat on the night she disappeared.

That a detective who worked on the high-profile case should make his claims in a book – even using the tabloid nickname for the child – is pretty much in keeping with a single-thread story that became a chance for viewers at home to play armchair detective, show how much you care by a mawkish display of ribbon wearing and gawp at the girl’s bereft parents.

Hollywoaks Removes Jamie Bulger Storyline

FOR those readers who recall when Madeleine McCann’s disappearance caused EastEnders and Coronation Street to rework plots and stand on a box to shout how much they cared for the child, Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks will not broadcast scenes that feature incidences similar to the James Bulger case.

The soap opera aimed at the hard of understanding, reality TV show bookers and men on registers who live in coastal caravan parks looking for bit of Sunday morning flesh thinks its viewers will take its plots for reality.

The plot was to feature two characters living under false names after bullying a child to death. But James Bulger’s mum complained, and production firm Lime Pictures “agreed to amend certain aspects of the storyline.”

RIP Coronation Street Star Maggie Jones, Your Life In Pictures

RIP Coronation Street actress Maggie Jones. You were Blanche Hunt, Deidre Barlow’s mum. “You need to learn to enjoy other people’s misfortune; otherwise, you’re going to have a very unhappy old age” – that was you.

Says ITV:

“Maggie, who has played battle-axe pensioner Blanche Hunt since 1974, died at the Salford Royal Hospital where she has been treated since falling ill in October. Maggie had been making a slow recovery but her condition deteriorated early Wednesday morning and she passed away peacefully in her sleep.”

HERE’S a sight to make ’em sit up and pay attention at the back . . . it’s soap star Helen Flanagan back in her sexy schoolgirl routine…And she was lucky not to have been kept in after school – because she was a VERY naughty girl.

Can this be the same News of The World that brought us the Shannon Matthews’ story: “SHANNON MAN’S VILE SEX SECRET.

Tony Ball Turns Down ITV – Katie Price Responds On ITV2

tony_ballMORE bad news for ITV as Tony Ball, the former boss of Sky, has no interests in becoming ITV’s chief executive.

In the first half of 2009, the broadcaster made a pre-tax loss of £105m. The only shows worth watching are the X Factor – because it makes money – and soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Without them ITV has nothing.

Time for Simon Cowell to be given full control over the channel, with Katie Price working under him, or just dry humping his chair – oh, the ratings.

In the meantime, here are those ITV schedules in full:

ITV 1: Coronation Street; Emmerdale; Coronation Street; Soap Bloopers III; The Tony Ball Interviews

X Factor And Strictly Come Dancing Go To War

simon-cowell1THE BBC has “let Britain down”, says Simon Cowell, to Sun readers.

Simon Cowell is “STRICTLY SEETHING” with “fury” at BBC “over X Factor clash with Rival show”.

The X Factor is on the telly at the same time as Strictly Come Dancing. This is a crisis of democracy that splits voters between voting for a dumpy stage school also-ran or the part-trained non-dancing celebrity.

Both shows are on at the same as YouTube, which features lots of undiscovered singers who can sing well and any number of nonentities not dancing well.

Cowell said: “It is the wrong decision for the simple reason the public don’t want it to happen. They are the two most popular shows on TV and the fact they go out at the same time is crazy. Everyone knows that.”

Coronation Street Star In Shoplifting Horror

“CORRIE BET IN SHOPLIFT SHOCKER” screams the Star’s front page, trailing a story that “CORRIE legend Julie Goodyear was at the centre of a shoplifting riddle last night over a pack of Nicorette gum worth £13.”

A riddle? More of tongue-twister – “Corrie Bet In Shoplift Shocker, Corrie Bettin Shoplift Shaker… Corrie Betting Shagging Slacker…

Nothing proven. Far from it. No crime committed. And while tempting to add Corrie Bet to Anorak’s celebrity shoplifting special, we consider the facts…

TOUGH times at ITV where Coronation Street’s players are being denied free use of the burger bus.

It’s the “CREDIT LUNCH”, says the Star. The “Corrie Munch Crunch,” says the Sun.

Fergus Shanahan Sees Tony Blair’s Cancer Plot

FERGUS Shanahan, the Sun’s deputy editor, has today’s non-sequitur of the day. It’s stream of consciousness journalism…

Former EastEnders actress Wendy Richard is dying of cancer. Shanahan says Richard reminds him of Pat Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner in Coronation Street, and also died of cancer.

When ill, Pat married Tony Booth, father to Cherie Booth, wife to Winston Churchill Blair.

“I wonder if he [Tony Blair] feels if three Labour governments have made enough progress on improving Britain’s dismal cancer survival rates.”

Journalists used to ask politicans questions, now they just wonder. Perhaps cancer can form part  of a soap opera storyline, and Fergus can investigate by watching..?

Daily Mail On Cheap And Lazy Rehashes

SAYS RICHARD Littlejohn in The Daily Mail:

And finally, ITV says it will have to drop local news bulletins. It can’t afford its ‘public service’ commitments. Frankly, regional news on both BBC and ITV is a disgrace – consisting of on-the-cheap, lazy rehashes of stories nicked out of the newspapers…

Whereas the Daily Mail creates cheap and lazy rehashes of stories from foreign newspapers and the telly. In today’s organ:

The Rosie Fingered Dawn Of Soapy Porn

“And over on ITV, Corrie turns more tawdry than ever,” says the Daily Mail, a fact illustrated by picture of Corrie’s 18-year-old slapper Rosie Webster in her bustier.

It is not the first time Coronation Street has gone for a shock effect using the Rosie Webster character. She was just 17 when scriptwriters cast her last year as a Lolita-style seductress having a sordid affair with her tutor.

How old was he, then? Just for, er, interest’s sake?

Mail readers clack their marmalade-coated tongues and fire off a foamy email:
