Costa Concordia: Will the hero who ground her in shallow water be found?

COSTA Concordia: Is Captain Francesco Schettino a coward who fell into a lifeboat? Is Captain Francesco Schettino a hero who saved lots of lives and only fell into the lifeboat when the ship was almost evacuated. Is Schettino just one of us who got unlucky? Kevin Maher wrote in the Times:

Whichever way you read it, there is something fantastically human, and humanly fallible, about Schettino’s alleged overconfidence on the night, and his alleged use of the Concordia as his personal 114,000-tonne Ferrari, whizzing close to the island of Giglio in order to impress both an old buddy on shore and, allegedly, a foxy lady on board. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve done this in my own life — made stupid mistakes in a bid to impress.

Has Maher ever been responsible for other people’s safety? Did he choose a career that necessitated sobriety, discipline and routine?
