Tim Peake according to the Daily Star: a ginger loser

Major Tim Peake is in spaaaaaace. He’s Britain’s first official astronaut to fly to the International Space Station. The British Interplanetary Society says Major Tim is the seventh person born in the UK to have blasted into the great beyond. The first British astronaut was Helen Sharman.

It’s the kind of news that cannot fail to bring joy and a sense of wonder. The world looks up. And it is glorious.

Unless you read the Daily Star, which bills Major Tim as “FIRST GINGER BRIT IN SPACE”. Surely there have been other ginger Britons before Tim Peake was born? We think of Cilla Black, King Henry VIII and James Hewitt.

major tim 1

Inside, spread over pages 6 and 7, Star readers get more on Major Tim. News is that Tim is the first British astronaut – he isn’t – and was not the first ginger to be strapped to rocket and expelled from the Earth’s atmosphere. Tintin beat him to it. Tintin is a cartoon character. And a Belgian.

tim space man

Some irony that as the country looks to the stars, the Daily Star should get it so badly wrong.

Arsenal balls: Giroud ‘axed’ and ‘threatened’ for his own good

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud is playing very well. Having scored a hat-trick in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Olympiakos in the Champions League, the Frenchman is feeling confident. But the Daily Star has grim news:

Giroud axe

Can it be that Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is threatening his star turn, the man whose goals saved the Gunners’ blushes? Is he axing Giroud, the player who has scored 11 goals in his last 14 matches for Arsenal?

No. It’s balls.

“I think he is in the same league as [the very best],” says Wenger at his Press conference. “He plays for one of the best clubs in Europe and he scores goals. If you look at the number of games and the number of goals, you have to give him credit. I think he’s among the best strikers in Europe.

“He is not only a goalscorer, he’s a guy who puts work in for the team. If you look at his record, I believe he has special qualities that are difficult to find, but of course you want him to be efficient as well.

“Where he has improved a lot is his link play with the other players, and that’s very important in our team. He’s a guy who wants always to improve and he has a positive mentality, and a strong one. I think that’s why he has come back in a very strong way.

“We are in a job where you have to accept that in every game, you are questioned. In his job, as a centre forward, [it’s] even more. If you don’t score for three games, you’re questioned again. That’s part of the job.”

Not threat. No axe. Other than that the Star is spot on.

So how did the Star manage to create the story that Giroud is being dropped from Wenger praising the player’s form and talent? From this?

“He had a breather and came in and out,” Wenger continues. “I think I will have to do that again because it is so demanding now and he has a game that demands a lot of energy. Sometimes you need a breather in that squad.”

Such are the facts.

Legal highs: bad reporting follows the death of a teenager in Bexley

The Star has news of a “Legal high alert as teen dies after ‘inhaling hippy crack at party'”.

Reporting on legal highs has been frenzied. Will the Star stick to the facts and provide a direct link between the nitrous oxide and the tragedy?

Cops said the 18-year-old was believed to have been drinking and taking legal high nitrous oxide at the bash in Bexley, south-east London

We don’t know, then, if the teenager died from the so-called hippy crack. All we know is they he died.

The Metropolitan Police say:

“Next of kin have been notified. A post-mortem will be scheduled in due course. At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained pending the findings of the post-mortem.”

Transfer Balls: Arsenal ands Liverpool sign Khedira from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid

Transfer Balls catches the Daily Star’s news that Arsenal and Liverpool are all set to sign Sami Khedira.

Paul Brown says Arsenal and Liverpool will both try to sign the German player when his Real Madrid contract ends on June 30. Offering no proof that they will, Brown then says Chelsea could afford to buy him. Why Chelsea would want Khedira and why Kehdira would want Chelsea are not things that bother the writer. And readers can also imagine what other clubs could afford Khedira.

Maybe Bayern Munich can? After all it was the Daily Star that rold us Khedira was heading to the German champions:

Khedira Chelsea

But that would be odd because whilst Brown says Arsenal baulked at Khedira’s wage demands, the, er, Daily Star told us that they didn’t:

Screen shot 2015-03-12 at 09.08.29

But then came Daily Star news that Khedira had gone back on that Arsenal agreement and agreed to join Bayern Munich:

Khedira agrees

So. He agreed to Arsenal. He agreed to Bayern Munich. Which brings us to the Daily Star’s news that next season Kehedia will be playing for Manchester Untied, Liverprool or Chelsea:

Giant ginger Scottish rats run amok at Cheltenham

The Daily Star leads with news of rats. Ginger Rats. Scottish Ginger Rats! It’s news you might miss because the Star’s front-page news is squashed between a riot of colourful adverts for horse racing at Cheltenham and the boast that it now the only tabloid with Page 3 Girls:

daily star ginger rats

News is that the “savage rodents have turned a reddish colour after pet rats were released and bred with wild ones. And they can be seen running wild every day in Lochpark Industrial Estate, Hawick, just 20 miles from England.”

And “the rats have been burrowing towards England”.

The entire story is based on the report of eyewitness Colin, who says: “I’ve seen white rats as well as ginger ones. Someone from the council came up but I’m not sure what stage they are at.”

The story continues in the Express, where the ginger Scottish rats are now “GIANT”. But the photo shows a small, cute rodent – because giant rats massed at the border can be hard to spot:

Liverpool balls: Steven Gerrard and the Rochdale paedo

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard apepars on the Daily Star cover. The story is is of a “troll’s sick post” about his daughter:

Daily_Star_Weekend_1_3_2015

What did this sicko say to warrant front-page exposure?

The Rochdale youth player posted the vile remarks under an online snap of the Liverpool captain with his youngest girl Lourdes. Reds ace Gerrard captioned the Instagram picture: “My World.”

But the young footballer then wrote: “I’d bang your girl Stevie.”

Yeah. But what did the “sick troll” say? Oh, that was it.

The comment provoked uproar from fans who branded the youth – a rising star tipped for the top – a paedophile.

This youth player is a teenager. And, you know, teenagers says stupid things. They say things that they hope will cause offence. But in these offence-seeking times teenager’s quip is a police matter:

Police were also called but said they could take no action unless Gerrard reported the incident. The troll, who we cannot name for legal reasons, removed the taunt but his club are close to showing him the exit door.

Wow! Just wow!

A source at Rochdale said: “He’s landed himself in hot water as his comments have brought the club into disrepute. A fair few people were appalled and reacted angrily by ringing the club. There were calls for him to be kicked out but that hasn’t happened yet. He may escape with a suspension and a fine but he’ll be a lucky boy if he does.”

Yeah. Lucky boy. Next time just scrawl it on the toilet wall…

As for Rochdale paedos, well, the outraged might be looking in the wrong place.

Transfer balls: Liverpool to sign James Milner from Manchester City with lower wages than Balotelli

Transfer balls: did you know that James Milner is desperate to join Liverpool. The Daily Express has an “exclusive”:

EXCLUSIVE: James Milner warned by Liverpool to drop wage demands to seal free transfer

James Milner, the Manchester City tyro – still wanted by perennial Premier League title contenders and super-rich club Manchester City – has been “warned” that he could miss out on playing for Liverpool?

Screen shot 2015-03-01 at 07.07.21

John Richardson tells his readers:

The 29-year-old midfielder sees his Etihad contract, worth around £120,000 a week, run down [sic] at the end of the season, making him a free agent.

Talks are at an advanced stage to allow Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, whose side face Milner’s Manchester City today, to add him to his squad next season but the Anfield club have made it clear that they won’t shatter their wage structure to accommodate the former Leeds United, Newcastle and Aston Villa man.

Shatter? This is the same Liverpool who signed Mario Balotelli for £16m and pay him £125,000-a-week:

“I think we have done a really smart piece of business here,” said Reds boss Brendan Rodgers. “This transfer represents outstanding value for the club.”

We’re sure Milner’s agents are worried sick about breaking that Liverpool wage structure. If they don’t where on erath will England internatioanl James Milner find work?

Richardson adds:

If he is prepared to take a pay cut then a deal could be sealed at the end of the season.

Arsaenal Balls: The ‘real’ reason Sanchez chose Gunners over Liverpool is…

So. Why did Alexis Sanchez choose to play for Arsenal? The Daily Star has the truth. The headline declares:

Arsene Wenger reveals the REAL REASON why Alexis Sanchez chose Arsenal over Liverpool

What is the real reason. We thought it was a combination of money, London and Champions’ League football.

Paul Brown writes:

ARSENE WENGER claims Alexis Sanchez chose Arsenal over Liverpool because only the Gunners could match his Champions League ambitions.

Is that what Wenger said? No. He said:

“Transfers at that level take always time to get every detail right, so because it takes time, you think always that somebody else can come in – PSG, Bayern Munich. We met his agent in Brazil a few times and talked about the transfer. In Europe we did it with Barcelona. Once we got the decision he would like to join us we were happy. He had maybe not had number of games he wanted at Barcelona and I tried to convince him I could help him develop the quality of his game, that the way we play would suit him.”

But what is the ‘REAL REASON” Sanchez joined Arsenal. Brown has failed to deliver on the headline.

Over on Arsenal.com, Wenger says:

“I don’t know why he has chosen us and not anybody else, but we are very happy that he has done that.”

Such are the facts…
