1960s Horror Food: The Luminous Metrecal Diet In A Can

IN the 1950s and 1960s, Mead Johnson’s Metrecal promised to get you into shape. What that shape was, we people of the future can only guess at – and we guess it was a human form jackknifed over a toilet.

Mead Johnson spotted Sustagen, a composite blend of mix of skimmed milk powder, soybean  flour, vitamins, minerals, corn oil, minerals and vitamins spooned into hospital patients not up to eating solids. Pressing ‘Go’ on the random-name-generating computer, produced Metrecal, the weight-reducing miracle. It looked like baby powder. It tasted like baby sick. But – buy – it sure cured your appetite.

Take a drink and get slim. But do stick to the 900 calories of Metrecal a day.

This advert for the vile goop is from 1965:

The keen-to-be-slim could chow down on Metrecal milkshakes, Metrecal cookies, Metrecal clam chowder (New England style) and Metrecal tuna and noodles. Remember, so long as you kept to 900 calories a day, you’d be thinning. And nothing was better at building the new you than the liquid lunches, dinners and breakfasts.

Tabloid rules: How to starve with Jude Law but not Justin Bieber or the Manchester United and Arsenal squads

nick curtis

NICK Curtis wants to talk about stars, like Matt Smith, Jude Law, James Corden, Benedict Cumberbatch and Damien Hirst. But he needs to find a way to work the celeb beat. So. He talks about diets as well to his Evening Standard readers:

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man in possession of a newly slimline figure must be on the 5:2 diet. That, at least, is the suspicion these days whenever a male acquaintance goes from chunky to chiselled in a matter of weeks, or a star like Colin Firth turns up at the Toronto Film Festival looking a shadow of the wet-shirted Mr Darcy that he once was. Matt Smith, Jude Law and Damien Hirst are among those who have also lost a lot of heft recently, possibly on the 5:2 diet.

We don’t know for sure whether these men ARE on the diet du jour, of course…

Ut with a few hundred words to fill and keywords to hit on Google, it’s useful to guess.

In other news, Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, the entire Arsenal squad, Prince George, David Beckham, President Assad of Syria and Justin Bieber are on the 5:2 diet. Or not…

Does smoking marijuana make you slimmer and control insulin? Does God make you fat?

weed slims

CAN smoking marijuana make you thin?

This report tells us:

The study looked at more than 4,600 people, 12 percent of whom said they were current marijuana users and 42 percent of whom said they had used in the past. Previous research had shown that marijuana users had a lower prevalence for diabetes and obesity, but this was the first study where scientists tried to determine if there was a link between insulin and glucose levels and marijuana usage, Yahoo Shine reported…

The study concludes: “with the recent trends in legalization of marijuana in the United States, it is likely that physicians will increasingly encounter patients who use marijuana and should therefore be aware of the effects it can have on common disease processes, such as diabetes mellitus. We found that current marijuana use is associated with lower levels of fasting insulin, lower HOMA-IR and smaller waist circumference.”

One theory:

Some research finds that highly religious people are less likely to take drugs, but more likely to be obese — perhaps because they’re substituting one compulsive behavior (overeating) for the other (smoking marijuana). So, some of the obese people in the national surveys may be religious folk, who might otherwise be heavy marijuana smokers, but are eating too much instead. That could make it look like marijuana is slimming. Also consider that one of the most popular uses of medical marijuana is to stimulate appetite in people with cancer, AIDS or other diseases. Such patients are significantly less likely to be obese than the general population — so in this case, weight loss would precede or prompt the marijuana smoking.

Is smoking weed a compulsive behaviour?

Dr. Stuart Weiss, a professor and  endocrinologist at the NYU School Of Medicine said, “We’d have to assume that there’s some compound that is involved with this marijuana smoke that causes an improvement in metabolism.”

Other research:

New research from the University of California, Irvine — detailed in the March issue of Cell Metabolism — found that certain brain chemicals with characteristics similar to marijuana might play a key factor in helping you shed pounds without any exercise. A dream come true? Here’s a brief look at the promising discovery…

It’s an endocannabinoid compound called 2-AG. Endocannabinoids, as the name might suggest, share a similar molecular structure to the active ingredients in cannabis. Typically, high levels of 2-AG are found in the brains of mammals, and previous studies suggested that these compounds may make the body crave fat. Scientists think endocannabinoids play a key role in regulating the body’s metabolism, or the energy it makes from food.

Interesting stuff. More studies are needed…

Want moobs? Visit Leeds where 59% of men have them

WHEN men get fat, it is perfectly on limits to mock them. Not women. Just men. If you do it to a woman, you’re spiteful and pressuring women to be a certain shape. If a man puts weight on, you can all cheerily singing “who ate all the pies?!” at them and chuckle away while they go home and cry themselves to sleep.

Nigel Lawson’s Law: All Fat Peopel Want To Look Rich

NIGELLA Lawson would like to tell Mail readers about her husband Charles Saatchi’s “nine eggs a day diet.”

In an exclusive interview with The Mail on Sunday’s You magazine today, 48-year-old Ms Lawson says her husband’s ‘completely mad eggs, eggs and more eggs diet’ now means that he is thinner than her.

Anorak recalls how former chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson, the masculine singular root of Nigella, also lost a shed load of weight.

It seems odd that the two males most associated with Nigella both now resemble the Christmas turkey that got away.
