Russell Brand and his dog introduce apricots and cinnamon to the working man
You don’t need to like Russell Brand to see that he’s rather good at what he does. And what he does well is media with a lot of ‘me’. It’s made him wealthy and famous. Yesterday Brand went on twitter to talk about his dog, an Alsatian called Bear. He told us that two working-class men ‘independently described him in surprisingly poetic language. “Apricot” coloured said one. “Cinnamon” said another.’
Moose Allain nailed it:
Who would have guessed apricots are one of the working man’s five a day and the lower ranks have experienced cinnamon? Maybe they glimpsed the exotica in Brand’s walk-in larder when they were fixing his yurt?

Why dogs stick their head out of car windows
Why do dogs stick their heads out of car windows? Because they can and you rarely ride with a tiger or a ferret on the front passenger seat? Nah, Truth is it’s all about the smalls.
“Dogs receive more olfactory stimulation with their heads fully outside the car versus inside the car. And even having the windows down only a few inches seems to provide enrichment and stimulation that dogs will seek out,” says Natalie Zielinski, director of behavior services at the Wisconsin Humane Society…
“When sticking their head out the window, they can smell every person in the street, every trash can they go by, every patch of grass, restaurant and other dogs. It’s like watching TV for us,” says Jennifer Cattet, an animal behavior researcher and owner of Medical Mutts, a service dog training center in Indianapolis.

Data proves that owning a bulldog is for idiots
Thanks to David McCandless we know which dogs make the best pals. Considering six facts – intelligence, costs, longevity, grooming, ailments, and appetite – McCandless crunched the numbers and concluded that bulldogs are not worth the effort an expense.

Judge orders puppy killer to carry photo of it in his wallet for 2 years
John Garrett Burrow, 24, pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals. In 2014, the soldier tied up Riley, an 8-month-old Lab mix puppy, with parachute cord and threw it into McFadyen Lake in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The dog drowned.
The Fayette Observer says “Kelsey Burrow, 21, the soldier’s wife, awaits judgment for misdemeanor accessory after the fact for false Facebook accounts saying the dog died during surgery to repair a broken leg as part of a Go-Fund-Me money solicitation to pay for the surgery cost [Defense Attorney David] Courie said was about $2,500.”
Superior Court Judge Jim Ammons sentenced Burrow to 30 days in jail, 100 hours community service and ordered the dog killer to spend two years on probation, during which Ammons ordered him to carry a photo of Riley in his wallet.
The judge told Burrow: “What you did was horrible. Absolutely horrible. I don’t want this to be the ruination of your life, but I hope Riley’s legacy will bring awareness to animal abuse. There’s way too much abuse of animals. Animals need to be treated humanely.”
The judge is right. But the wallet order is nonsense. What 24-year-old carries wallet?
PS: there is evidence that dogs’ brains react similarly to human brains:
Although we are just beginning to answer basic questions about the canine brain, we cannot ignore the striking similarity between dogs and humans in both the structure and function of a key brain region: the caudate nucleus. … In dogs, we found that activity in the caudate increased in response to hand signals indicating food. The caudate also activated to the smells of familiar humans. And in preliminary tests, it activated to the return of an owner who had momentarily stepped out of view. Do these findings prove that dogs love us? Not quite. But many of the same things that activate the human caudate, which are associated with positive emotions, also activate the dog caudate. Neuroscientists call this a functional homology, and it may be an indication of canine emotions.
The ability to experience positive emotions, like love and attachment, would mean that dogs have a level of sentience comparable to that of a human child.
Animal cruelty is a heinous crime.

Dog gets stick stuck in his urethra (photos)
Basil the elderly Jack Russell was out walking in Chapel Hill, Lincolnshire, when a shaft of plant got wedged up his urethra.
“He was walking like John Wayne when he ran back to us so I knew something was wrong,” says owner Jill Larcombe. “So I checked him and when I saw it I did a double take. I thought ‘oh my goodness, it can’t be’ – there was this stick-like shaft sticking three inches out of him. I tried to give it a little pull but he went ballistic.”
A vet, drugs and lubrication saved the day.

Smiley the therapy dog with no eyes brightens people’s lives
Smiley, a golden retriever, was born without eyes. He lives in Stouffville, Canada, working as a St. John’s Ambulance service dog. Smiley’s owner, Joanne George, rescued him from a puppy mill, when he was about 1 year old.
She introduced him to a deaf Great Dane named Tyler: She says:
“He was very scared, [the dogs] had never been out of that barn… Tyler was so bouncy and crazy and happy go lucky and [Smiley] turned into the same dog. He came out from underneath the tables where he was always hiding.”
She thought Smiley would make a good therapy dog.
“There was this man Teddy, [he had] no speech, no communication at all. [The staff] had never seen Teddy smile before. [He] smiled when Smiley got into his vision.”
If that doesn’t make you feel better about your day, nothing will…

The Hideous Story Of The Liverpool Man Eaten By His Neighbours’ Status Dog
SOME stories are so terrible they need repeating.
Clifford Clarke, 79, was cooking a meal in his Liverpool home. He opened the back door to let in some fresh air. Outside was a dog. Charlie was not his. The Presa Canario cross-breed had escaped from the garden of his neighbours Hayley Sulley, 30, and 29-year-old Della Woods. Charlie was one of the couple’s three dogs. All big dogs. All status dogs.

Council Snatched Pet Dogs As Owner Sat On The Toilet
“I WAS running and thought `oh my goodness’ I really need the toilet’,”said Patricia Abel, a 28-year-old out for a job on the Darwin foreshore. “I’ve been unwell and had a funny tummy, probably because of changing water, so I was quite desperate to get to a toilet and it could not wait until I got home. I’d jogged past the last public park toilet and it was a few hundred metres back, so rather than take Pepper all the way back with me I tied her to a bollard thinking she would be fine for a few minutes. I just thought I wouldn’t be able to make it in time if I had to drag Pepper all the way back to the toilet with me. By the time I got back she was gone.’
