The Death Throes Of Civilisation: Egypt, Tunisia, Libya And Belgium

WHAT we are watching, therefore, is death throes – Tunisia, Egypt, Libya … the collapse always starts at the fringes. But add Belgium, a country that has now broken the world record for the most number of days without a government – and also add Greece. Ireland will follow shortly, and behind that, Portugal, Spain and then who knows … Italy, maybe. Even Germany. Dark things are happening there.

Greece, needless to say, is dead man walking, or more like live country rioting. Violent clashes, in a long line of violent clashes, broke out again yesterday – between protesters and the police. Now there’s a surprise. Police have a punch-up with rioters. Well, I never.

Lara Logan’s Assault In Egypt Gives Daily A Chance To Mine A New Low In Journalism

LARA Logan, the former ITN reporter who was assaulted in Egypt while working for CBS, had it coming. Can this be what the Daily’s Mail’s Ephraim Hardcastle is suggesting?

Nothing excuses the Cairo sexual assault on CBS TV reporter Lara Logan, 39, the former swimwear model but she does have ‘form’ for dressing provocatively in inappropriate locations.

In 2002, she was rebuked by British military officers in Afghanistan for ‘flashing her cleavage’.

Reuters Staff Say They Are As Powerless As Egyptians Under Mubarak

HOSNI Mubarak is ousted in Egypt. The Egyptian Army rejoices that someone else from their ranks gets the keys to vaults and Thompson Reuters uses the moment of history to attack the Newspaper Guild of America:

In a letter circulated Friday shortly after Egyptian protesters succeeded in ousting Hosni Mubarak from his 30-year autocratic rule, the Guild, which represents 420 U.S. Reuters employees (mostly editorial staffers, of which there are 2,900 globally), circulated a letter that seized on the timing of the revolution, which Reuters journalists have been covering.

Egypt Sticks Up Two Fingers To Tony Blair And Peace

EGYPT: Tony Blair goes on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show. He wants us to know that we must avoid “hysteria” about the Muslim Brotherhood. And:

“Despite all those challenges, this is a moment when the whole of the Middle East could pivot and face towards change and modernisation and democracy and that would be a huge benefit for all of us.”

Obama And Other Idiots Suck Up To Racist Muslim Brotherhood: Photos

THERE are people in Trafalgar Square talking about solidarity with Egypt. One man holds up a sign says “Freedom For Palestine”. From what: Hamas or Hezbollah? Maybe both. You can take your pick of all manner of nutters in the Middle East you’d like to be free of. Maybe the Free Palestinians can wave in the Muslim Brotherhood, who are all for a free Palestine: one free of anyone who disagrees with fundamentalist Islam.

As for Egypt’s freedom… Well, what comes next? They are free of Mubarak. Are they free of the US? No. Not yet. Maybe. Obama is vacillating: Obama’s Director of National Intelligence James Clapper tells the House Intelligence Committee that the Muslim Brotherhood is “largely secular“.

Barack Obama Is Freedom For Lunch: Open Sesame, Egypt

BARACK Obama is free for lunch:

TUESDAY
Hummus, falafel, tabouli, yogurt ayran

On Tuesday we say “open sesame” to the delicious healthy cuisine of our peace-loving friends in the Middle East. That exciting region has been in the news a lot recently, especially Egypt. This week we learned that ancient land is much more than just pyramids and mummies – it’s also a place where people get disappointed when they lose their internet connection. While you are enjoying lunch, talk with your friends about Egyptian current events. Who are the ‘good guys’? Who are the ‘bad guys’? What should I do? When you have an answer, write an essay and send it to me. You might win an all- expense-paid diplomacy trip with my State Department team!

Britain’s Armchair Islamists Want Sharia Law In Egypt: Photos Of Unified Intolerance

Egypt Loses Mubarak’s Billions But Cairo Will Always Have Its Fashion Industry

EGYPT In Chaos: ABC News reports that when President Mubarak leaves, the Egyptian economy will be far worse off: he’s worth anything from $40-$70 billion dollars. Of course, most of the booty is kept outside Egypt.

If it’s in British banks, what should Britain do?

Egypt: What No Anti-Israel Protests?

IN Egypt we have seen a few flashes on anti-Israel rhetoric, but the protests have had nothing to do with Israel:

“OK, for years, people who claim to be my intellectual betters on foreign policy (and pretty much everything else), and particularly about the Middle East, have been telling me that the root cause of the problems in the Middle East is the “occupation” of disputed territories in the West Bank and Gaza, and that we won’t be able to make any progress without solving that issue. It is what motivates Arab anger, and animates their protests. Well, surely if this is the case, with all of the apparent anger and ongoing revolt in Cairo, we should be seeing many reports on the ground of protesters with angry signs against the Zionist entity, right? Or have I just missed them somehow?” – Rand Simberg.

Egypt Protest Rules: The Official Guide To Taking On Mubarak

THE Egyptian protests are all about freedom. But that doesn’t stop people trying to tell the activists how to behave. Anorak has come across these protest plans for the Egyptian who wants change. This is a guide on how to protest correctly and safely. You will need the right chant. You will need the right shoes. You will need a hooded top. Problem is that the other side are playing to a different set of rules. They’ve been circulating them by brick

Egypt: The Battle Of Tahrir Square In Photos

IN Tahrir Square, Cairo, supporters of President Hosni Mubarak, clashed violently with protestors looking for regime change. Can the sudden eruption of violent pro-Mubarak rioters be linked to the fact that for days we have been hearing that the police have disappeared from Cairo’s streets? Have the police re-emerged, albeit out of uniform?

Egypt: The Best Protest Signs (Mubarak: The Hitler Jew Rabbit)

ON the streets of Egypt the locals are carrying sings. Many are written in English, revealing an awareness of the TV news cameras. But not all of the signs are good at getting the message across; some just draw attention to themselves by their spelling, phrasing or just plain oddness (Mubarak is Hitler, a Jew and a rabbit?!). We’ve compiled a selection of the best for your perusal…

Biased BBC Says Muslim Brotherhood Are No Jihadis: Well, Not All Of Them Are

EGYPT In Chaos (Photos): The BBC has 50 journalists in Egypt. They also have Simpson and Bowen talking to other BBC journalists while the cameras roll. All agree that the Muslim Brotherhood is a conservative organisation. (Many Egyptians disagree.)

Says Jeremy Bowen on the BBC – and this the same Bowen who said of the Islamists that want to annihilate Israel and every Jew in it: “Hamas is a less conventional organisation”:

The country’s only properly organised mass political movement outside the ruling party is the Muslim Brotherhood, and it would do very well in any free election.

Unlike the jihadis, it does not believe it is at war with the West. It is conservative, moderate and non-violent. But it is highly critical of Western policy in the Middle East.

Egypt: Iraqis Flee To Safety Of Home

EGYPT is now more dangerous than Iraq:

In a geopolitical shift, even Iraq decided it would evacuate its citizens, sending three planes to Egypt – including the prime minister’s plane – to bring home for free those who wish to return. Thousands of Iraqis had once fled to Egypt to escape the violence in their own country.

Volunteers Translate Egyptian Calls Into Tweets

EGYPT: technology and humanity may yet save the country:

“Earlier today, in response to the continued blackout of the Internet in Egypt, Google and Twitter announced that they had set up phone numbers in Egypt for protesters to call into, that would then automatically be turned into voicemail messages, that would then be tweeted out on the account @Speak2Tweet. Of course, the immediate point of this system is not to help organize within Egypt, but hopefully to offer a way for Egyptians to literally speak to the rest of the world.

To further this aim, a number of volunteers outside of Egypt (you know, where the Internet still works) have decided to collaborate online to get those voicemails – which are mainly in Arabic – translated into English.”

It’s amazing when people help each other like this.

Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood Shouted Down By Unity Protesters

EGYPT in Chaos: Will the Islamists take power and seize control, replacing one authoritarian regime with another?

The BBC says Mohamed ElBaradei and the Muslim Brotherhood may already be divided:

However, there have been some signs of disagreement within the opposition, with the largest group, the Muslim Brotherhood, appearing to go back on its endorsement of leading figure Mohamed ElBaradei as a negotiator with Mr Mubarak.

A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Morsy, told the BBC: “The Muslim Brotherhood is much stronger than Mohamed ElBaradei.”

In Egypt One Millions Men March As Thieves Rob Their Homes

EGYPT In chaos: One million people are expected to be on the streets of Cairo and Alexandria today. Given the impression of events on the TV news, nearly all of these protesters will be men. CBA, Sky, The Telegraph, inemc, eyewitnessnews and the FT all agree that one million is the number.

The media also agree that with the police are absent and locals – we have only seen armed men – are protecting their homes round-the-clock with guns and knives.

The Sun delivers a photo of men up to no good and the news:

Hundreds of thieves yesterday swarmed like locusts over a revered site in the shadow of the pyramids – taking advantage of the chaos to ransack the House of the Temple of Osiris.

Greens Blame Global Warming For Riots In Egypt: Mubarak’s A Hero

EGYPT In Chaos: We waited and we waited. and then in came: the troubles in Egypt can be blamed on global warming.  Cameron Scott knows that Mr Mubarak is not blame:

Most major political shifts are caused at least in part by economic pressures. Food prices are now at an all-time high. Those prices have, according to a wide range of analysts, contributed to the political revolts first in Tunisia and now in Egypt… But here’s the kicker: Food prices aren’t just some arbitrary economic statistic. They measure (inversely) the planet’s success at sustaining its human population. And right now, it’s not doing so well. The reason? Erratic weather spurred by climate change.

Only, there are bumper crops – cereal production would be the third-highest on record. Global commodity prices do rise and fall. But there is no direct link in that fluctuation to climate change.

And in Egypt the food prices can be high but, as David Pollock of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy writes, Mubarak tries to keep them low:

But food prices for basic items are heavily subsidized in Egypt … there are rations and subsidized goods of inferior quality available at very very low prices, and these parallel markets for better and more freely available flour or bread or rice or cooking oil that are available at more like market prices.

Mubarak – champion of cheap food! Not much of a slogan to revolution is it? Maybe the Egyptians are upset with him for something else..?
