Tahrir Square protesters say they plan to march Friday to the presidential palace in Heliopolis unless the army makes its stance clear. Al Jazeera Reporters Arrested In Cairo: Times Reporter Beaten

AL Jazeera is on the scene in Egypt. Americans are realising that their hot air news media lacks insight:

:

“If you’re watching Al Jazeera, you’re seeing uninterrupted live video of the demonstrations, along with reporting from people actually on the scene, and not “analysis” from people in a studio. The cops were threatening to knock down the door of one of its reporters minutes ago. Fox has moved on to anchor babies. CNN reports that the ruling party building is on fire, but Al Jazeera is showing the fire live.”

Egypt responds by arresting six reporters with the news group. Al Jazeera correspondent Dan Nolan live-tweeted their arrest (see picture).

Egypt Is No Hell For British Tourists: Just Ask the Israelis

EGYPT: As the British tourists arrive back in the UK, the Sun screams from its front page: “30,000 Brits in riot hell”.

(If anyone can find a traveller who left Tunisia for the calm of and Egypt, get in touch.)

But is it hell for tourists in Egypt? No tourists have been attacked. And if you want a barometer as to how dangerous it is for holidaymakers, look to how Egyptians are treating Israelis – not as hated as Algerian footballers, agreed, but still representatives of a traditional foe:

“We are in Cairo and have no plans to return to Israel sooner,” Israeli tour guide and Arabic teacher Amos Abidov said Sunday while leading an Israeli tour group visiting Egypt…

Egypt’s Troubles Delight Algerian Football Fans

ADRIAN Chen has piece on how Egypt’s football fans are fomenting change. Forget the Muslim BrotherhoodWikileaks, the death of Khalid Said and Elsaid Bilalmummies or whatever else is being attributed as being behind the protests, Chen wants us to look at the country’s football fans and their readiness for battle.

These guys are better at tangling with cops than just about anyone.

Egyptian blogger Alaa abd El-Fatah tells Al Jazeera:

“The ultras – the football fan associations – have played a more significant role than any political group on the ground at this moment.”

Egypt Revolution: Country On The Brink As Tanks Roll Into Cairo (Photos)

IN Egypt the protesters have responded to the presence of tanks on the streets and outside the main TV building in Cairo by climbing on them. This is no Tiananmen Square where the lone figure stood before the tanks symbolised the struggle for individuality against the machine. This is a revolution that might really happen. At one moment a soldier left his lines to go over to the crowd. They hoisted him high on their shoulders.

These mass protests against the three-decade rule of President Hosni Mubarak may yet achieve the change the protestors crave.

Egypt Erupts: Ayatollah Khomeini’s Sermons Are Now On Twitter

WHAT next for Egypt? With President Hosni Mubarak ousted, the people would be free to be heard and live without fear.

From Cairo, the BBC’s Yolande Knell writes:

Ordinary Egyptians appear to be losing their fear of direct confrontation with the security forces. There have been bloody and drawn out clashes all over Cairo and in some of Egypt’s main cities.

Or:

“In my opinion, the Islamic Republic of Iran should see these events without exception in a positive light,” said Mohammad-Javad Larijani, secretary general of the Iranian High Council for Human Rights and one of the most outspoken figures among Iran’s traditional conservatives.

He made it clear that he hoped that the “anti-Islamic” government of Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, who was ousted in Tunisia, would be replaced by a “people’s government,” meaning one in which conservative Islamic forces would gain the upper hand, as they did when Iranian people overthrew Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, establishing a quasi-theocracy.

Ibrahim Eissa On Egypt’s Sick Dictatorship

IN Egypt, there is no freedom of speech:

Ibrahim Eissa, editor of the independent daily al-Dustor, was originally convicted in March and sentenced to six months on charges of reporting and publishing false information that questioned the health of 80-year-old President Hosni Mubarak. The judges at the time ruled that a series of articles he published threatened national stability and caused foreign investors to pull their money out of the country.

What money?
