Ian Tomlinson: Pc Simon Harwood, the Met escapes and the Sun’s lies

PC Simon Harwood will keep his police pension. Make that former Pc Simon Harwood, the copper sacked for gross misconduct. Ian Tomlinson’s family may well laugh. In Tomlinson was the man who died at the G20 protest in London back in 2009. Harwood was filmed hitting Tomlinson and pushing him to the ground. Tomlinson was on his way home from work. He was minding his own business. His hands were in his pockets. He was facing the other way.

An inquest ruled that Mr Tomlinson had been unlawfully killed. Dr Freddy Patel’s initial verdict was that Mr Tomlinson died of natural causes. That was wrong.

The Killing Of Ian Tomlinson In Photos

Harwood admitted using unnecessary force. He was acquitted of manslaughter.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Maxine de Brunner of the Met Police says Hawwood cannot lose his pension because he was not convicted of a criminal offence in relation to death of newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson. She says:

“Simon Harwood will retain his pension when he reaches pensionable age. I’m unable to remove his pension because he has not been convicted of a criminal offence…We must remember on April 1, 2009 Ian Tomlinson lost his life. I take full responsibility for Simon Harwood and I would like to offer my sincere apologies and condolences to his family. Today’s hearing has resulted in the maximum penalty that was ever available to the panel – dismissal due to gross misconduct. That leaves no ambiguity as to how the Met views the actions of Simon Harwood.”

She takes full responsibility. Good. Sack her as well, then.

Harwood did not work alone. Here is why his bosses at the Met should be charged, too.

Ian Tomlinson, Mark Duggan And Learning To Love The Brutal Police Again

REMEMBER when the hated police were being attacked for flogging stories to the News of The Word, being institutionally racist, stomping on freedom, killing the music and having spa treatments? That was – oh – about three weeks ago. Now the people are cheering for them to crack heads with extreme prejudice.

David Cameron, fresh from touring Croydon and standing in what must be safest street in the UK, tells Parliament:

To the law-abiding people who play by the rules and who are the overwhelming majority in this country, I say, “The fight back has begun. We will protect you. If you’ve had your livelihood and property damaged, we will compensate you. We are on your side.” To the lawless minority, the criminals who have taken what they can get, I say: we will track you down, we will find you, we will charge you, we will punish you. You will pay for what you have done.

We need to show the world, which has looked on, frankly, appalled, that the perpetrators of the violence we have seen on our streets are not in any way representative of our country, or of our young people. [You sure about that, Dave – allegedly?] We need to show them that we will address our broken society and restore a sense of stronger morality and responsibility in every town, in every street and in every estate. A year away from the Olympics, we need to show the world the Britain that does not destroy, but that builds; that does not give up, but stands up; that does not look back, but always looks forward. I commend this statement to the House.

Ian Tomlinson: It’s A Crime That Pc Harwood Is The Only Copper In The Dock

WAS Ian Tomlinson murdered? No. But he was unlawfully killed. Pc Simon Hardwood, an officer with the militia-styled Territorial Support Group, hit him with baton and pushed him over.

Tomlinson had his hands in his pockets. He offered neither threat nor reistance.

Harwood used “excessive and unreasonable force”. Was that violence typical of the man and the police?

Before he pushed Tomlinson, Harwood had been twice investigated over his alleged aggressive behaviour.

While working for the Metropolitan Police, Harwood was, allegedly, involved in a road rage incident in the late 1990s.  He had been due to face a misconduct hearing. But the heating never happened. Before it could, Harwood resigned from the force on medical grounds. So. That was the end of his police career? Obviously not.. He rejoined the police, working as a civilian computer worker. He was back in the system. In May 2003, Harwood applied to join Surrey Police as a PC.

Ian Tomlinson Was Killed By A Rogue System: Harwood Is Just A Product

PC Simon Harwood, a member of the Metropolitan Police’s Territorial Support Group, used “excessive and unreasonable force” against Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests in London, a jury has decided, write Richard North.

Image: Paul King (centre), the son of Ian Tomlinson, and his widow Julia (2nd right) speak to the press after the inquest into Mr Tomlinson’s death was delivered as an unlawful killing.

To reach an unlawful killing conclusion, says The Guardian, the jury were required to have been satisfied to a higher burden of proof than the other possible verdicts, which could have been reached “on the balance of probabilities”. They had to be convinced “beyond reasonable doubt“, the same threshold used in criminal trials.

Ian Tomlinson Death Inquest: Simon Harwood Is Here To Help The Family

ONLY the Guardian leads with the inquest into the death of Ian Tomlinson. Its front-page headline tells us:

“Officer who shoved Tomlinson at G20 protests: ‘I feared for my life.”

The officer is PC Simon Harwood, part of the Met’s specialist Territorial Support Group. Mr Harwood is on trial. Indeed, the coroner Peter Thornton reminded him that he was under no obligation:

“I’m sure that you know, and no doubt will have been advised, that you are not obliged to answer any question tending to incriminate you. It may well be that I shall repeat that warning to you later.”

Ian Tomlinson Death Inquest: Was He Drunk And ‘Vacant When The Police Attacked?

THE televised death of Ian Tomlinson has a new episode. A new video shows his final moments.

The death inquest into how Ian Tomlinson came to die at the G20 protests has begun. Mr Tomlinson died on 1 April 2009. The jury, sitting at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in Fleet Street, London, will review the evidence.

Judge Peter Thornton QC, sitting as assistant deputy coroner at the central London hearing, says that Dr Freddy Patel’s initial verdict that Mr Tomlinson died of natural causes will be examined. Dr Patel’s opinion was contradicted by pathologists Nat Cary and Kenneth Shorrock who said Tomlinson died of internal bleeding. Says the judge:

“There is likely to be controversy too about the finding of Dr Patel in the first post-mortem of the presence of fluid in the abdomen and to what extent it contained blood. But I will say no more at this stage.”

Pamela Somerville Was Assaulted By Police But Unlike Ian Tomlinson She Is Middle Class

PAMELA Somerville fell asleep in her car. The car had broken down. The Mail says she has degree is microbiology. This might be the most spurious fact ever. We shall see. She is 59. She is 5ft 2in. She is in Melksham, Wiltshire. She is not wearing a Millwall football shirt. She does not smoke. She is not Ian Tomlinson, who died after being assaulted by police at the G20 protest..

The facts keep coming.

Captured on film, a burly police sergeant flings an innocent 5ft 2in woman on to a concrete floor, knocking her unconscious.

Me is Mark Andrews, He is 6ft 3in. He is a former soldier Mark Andrews. He is stood before the Beak at Oxford Magistrates’ Court.

The Mail tells its readers:

The incident… will inevitably stoke debate about the deteriorating relationship between the public and the police following the death of newspaper vendor Ian Tomlinson, pushed to the ground by a police officer during last year’s G20 protests.

Oh, yes, Mr Ian Tomlinson, who at the time of his death was sleeping in a shelter near Smithfield market. He had no degree in microbiology.

What did the Mail have to say on him? Stephen Glover offered us:

We don’t yet know how drifter and alcoholic Ian Tomlinson provoked a policeman to attack him minutes before he collapsed and died of heart failure.

Not if. How. But that is mild compared to the treatment dished out by the Mail’s Amanda Platell:

However, there is a second aspect of this story, which, I fear, gives another unpleasant insight into modern Britain and it concerns the way Ian Tomlinson’s grieving family relished the media spotlight.

A man died. He was not wearing a suit when he died.

Of course, I am not suggesting that the family are not grieving, but the facts of Ian Tomlinson’s recent life must lead one to question the depth of their grief.

Ian Tomlinson: PC Simon Horwood, Dr Freddy Patel And A Televised Police ‘Cover Up’

IAN Tomlinson died shortly after a policeman called Simon Horwood hit him. Ian Tomlinson was making his way home from work during the G20 protest in London 2009.

He was bitten by a police dog. He was hit by a polcie baton. We saw him hit no-one.

The police investigated the police. The Crown Prosecution Service, what is termed an independent body, found that no copper had any case to answer. That assault you saw on the telly didn’t happen.

There will be no chance for a judge to decide is the police non-assault led to the death of Mr Tomlinson. There is no case to answer. It never happened.

We have not heard from PC Horwood. His everyone of events is unknown to us. But had it gone to court, we would have heard PC Horwood’s side of the story. Has he been deprived of the chance to clear his name of the stench.

But It Was Manslaughter?

* Police complaints investigators recommended that the riot officer filmed pushing Ian Tomlinson to the ground before he died at the G20 protest last year should be charged with manslaughter, according to the dead man’s family.

This revelation has added to controversy over the decision by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) not to bring any charges against the police officer in question, PC Simon Harwood. The recommendation was included in a report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for prosecutors last August.

Yesterday, the CPS rejected that opinion and ruled out any criminal charges, including lesser offence of assault or misconduct in a public office.

PC Simon Harwood

That’s him on the video of Mr Tomlinson being struck with a baton and pushed over from behind (see pictures below). PC Harwood’s identity number is covered up and he has a scarf across the lower part of his face. Were it not for his uniform, you might mistake him for a thug seeking anonymity in the mob. But he did NOTHING wrong. Although, while the investigation went on he was suspended from a job looking after the public and keeping law and order.

* A second pathologist, Nat Cary, has challenged the CPS decision to drop criminal charges saying Tomlinson suffered injuries that would support an acutal bodily harm (ABH) charge. Mr Cary said the injuries were “not relatively minor” and that they were “consistent with a baton strike”.

What do we know about PC Harwood:

The married 43 year-old had been due to face a misconduct hearing over the alleged road rage incident, understood to have happened in the late 1990s, but instead retired on medical grounds.

So. He was no longer a copper?

A few years later, the father of two rejoined the Met as a civilian computer worker before applying to Surrey Police for a job as a police constable in May 2003.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: “He applied to become a Pc with us in 2003. Following our vetting procedure, liaising with the Met Police and passing a medical examination, he was accepted.”

Following this? There’s more:

Pc Harwood spent a year and half working in Surrey before applying to be transferred back to the Met in the autumn of 2004.

By which time that original road rage allegation was no longer an issue?

The Experts

* Dr Nat Cary, who carried out a second examination concluded that Mr Tomlinson fell on his elbow, which “impacted in the area of his liver causing an internal bleed which led to his death a few minutes later”.

Prosecutors admitted there was evidence that Ian Tomlinson had been assaulted by the riot squad officer. But they said he could not be tried for manslaughter or even assault because of the results of the first post-mortem by controversial pathologist Dr Freddy Patel.

* The expert, who has previously been disciplined by the General Medical Council and is now under investigation again, decided Mr Tomlinson died of a heart attack.

However, two further post-mortems by different experts ruled the 47-year-old father-of-nine died because of internal bleeding.

Dr Freddy Patel – aka Dr Mohmed Saeed Sulema Patel

* The expert is now facing fresh claims that he bungled four post-mortems between 2002 and 2004. The GMC is examining 26 charges of sub-standard practice. He is accused of giving questionable verdicts on the causes of deaths, several of which later turned out to be suspicious and has been under investigation since 2005. He was suspended from the register last summer and barred from undertaking post-mortems in suspicious deaths.

Dr Patel Again

* Inquiries into the doctor began after the Camden Ripper Anthony Hardy was caught in 2003. Dr Patel ruled a naked and bruised woman found in Hardy’s flat a year earlier had died from a heart attack. Hardy went on to kill two more women. Dr Patel denies the misconduct charges and insists he was not criticised over the Hardy case.

The Family Reacts

Paul King, Ian Tomlinson’s son, says:

* “Words can’t describe how we feel, we feel very let down, very disappointed… You haven’t heard the last of us yet… It’s outrageous. We feel like it was not a full investigation from the beginning. It’s a big cover-up. They knew that if they dragged this out long enough, they would avoid charges. They knew just what they were doing. They’ve pulled us through a hedge backwards – now we have to go on living our lives.

Tomlinson’s widow, Julia, told reporters last night:

“The decision not to charge him came as a particular shock because the IPCC [the Independent Police Complaints Commission] told me they had recommended charges of manslaughter when they sent the file up.”

The police do not always keep the peace. Sometimes they get stuck in. Anyone who has ever been to a football match will know how the police can antagonise a volatile situation by looking hard and menacing. They challenge you to have a go.

But if you hit a man, perhaps an off-duty policeman, and he soon after dies… If you assault a man with a baton… If you strike the first blow… If it is all captured on CCTV… If you are not connected… Well, if you do that you are in the police station and then in court on a charge. But if you are in a uniform and the thing is captured on a private camera, the evidence is not to be trusted, the rules are changed and it is deemed that nothing happened.

Although a man is dead. Here’ the visual evidence:

The Life And Death Of Ian Tomlinson: In Pictures And Casual Police Violence

IAN Tomlinson died at the G20 protests. Ian Tomlinson walking home from work in London. He did not fast enough for the police’s liking. They pushed him. They hit him from behind. He did not hit them. He did not see them. He fell. Later he died. The police said he died of a heart attack.

The Crown Prosecution Service has looked at the pictures and video and found that the office has no case to answer. No charges should be brought against him.

In Pictures: Who Killed And Covered Up Blair Peach?

WHO killed Blair Peach? He was the special needs teacher who died on April 23 1979 after an altercation with police during an anti-fascist demonstration against the National Front in Southall, London. Scotland Yard released files confirming he died as a result of a blow to the head inflicted by an unnamed officer. He was killed by The Specials.

In all, 14 witnesses said they saw Mr Peach being hit by a police officer. The internal report concluded that officers conspired to cover up the truth. Commander Cass, a former Scotland Yard officer, wrote a report. It was secret.

In Pictures: The Memorial And Death Of Ian Tomlinson

ONE year ago Ian Tomlinson died. He was 47. He died on a London Street. He was pushed to the ground by a policeman – a British policeman at the G20 protest. Ian Tomlinson had his hands in his pockets when he was pushed. He had his back to the police. He was hit with a police baton on his way home from work. Today Ian Tomlinson’s widow Julia Tomlinson placed flowers at a memorial in London. Politicians, campaigners, lawyers and academics have signed a letter to the Director of Public Prosecutions which criticises the “intolerable” delays surrounding the investigation into the death at the G20 protests of Ian Tomlinson. One year on and nothing. Nothing. It looks like the police look after their own. It looks like the police aren’t all that keen on justice. Ask yourselves this: had someone struck a policeman from behind with a metal rod – and had that policeman died a short while later – what would have happend to the perpetrator?

Images 7 onwards for the assault.

Delroy Smellie Not Made To Pay For The Death Of Ian Tomlinson

SGT. DELROY Smellie is cleared of striking Nicola Fisher with baton. Mrs Fisher did not turn up at court. “I stand by what I said,” says she. But not in court.

When we bash one policeman we are bashing the Force. When we take on one copper we are taking them all one. But what if the one you are gunning for is innocent? Are we going for Smellie or are we after justice for the murder of Ian Tomlinson?

Make one of them pay – it matters not which one. They all look the same, don’t they. And, indeed, they all look the same by choice. And Delroy Smellie chose to smack Nicola Fisher about the legs with a metal rod.

G20 In Pictures – The Death Of Ian Tomlinson

District Judge Daphne Wickham says Smellie had 7 seconds to react when ran in front of him “hurling abuse at a vigil held on 2 April to mark the death of newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson at a previous demonstration“.

Would she hurl abuse at a copper were he walking in the street? Would she dare?

G20 In Pictures: Sergeant Delroy Smellie Versus Nicola Fisher, Not Ian Tomlinson

POLICE SERGEANT Delroy Smellie arrived at City of Westminster Magistrates Court, London, charged with assaulting one Nicola Fisher during the G20 protests of April 2, 2009. Smellie – the more you say the better and better it sounds – has pleaded not guilty to a charge of common assault. Climate protester Nicola Fisher has already given evidence to the Home Affairs Committee in London. Sergeant Delroy Smellie has not.

Is that fair?

But wait: At City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the alleged victim, protester Nicola Fisher, is reportedly, “unwilling” to attend court. Why?

Yeah, Smellie. Oh, nominative determinism.

The G20 summit has long stopped being about politics, and now exists only for the media as a chance for the uniformed police and banner waving poverty fans – hoods up, kids – to go for it in scenes missing from our TV screens since all-seater stadia erupted all over football.

G20 Protest Death: Ian Tomlinson’s Head Injuries And Chinese Police Techniques

chinese-torch-team1FLICKING through the Chinese police training manual, Practices of City Administration Enforcement, we consider tips on the best way to beat up citizens.

“In dealing with the subject, take care to leave no blood on the face, no wounds on the body, and no people in the vicinity.”

Had only the Chinese had the common decency to leave the manual behind when they were jogging through London with the Olympic torch aflame in their hands our brave Bobbies would not have to deal with Sky News’ picture of dead newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson’s head injury.

ian-tomlinson-headTomlinson was pushed onto the pavement by a policeman and beaten about the legs by the police during the G20 protests. And now Sky zooms in on head injury.

Had the Boys In (Black and) Blue been as properly trained as their Chinese counterparts, they would have bene protected from the likes of Tomlinson.

Says one officer, who has removed his number:

“I told the lads that we can’t go on forever waiting for a flight of stairs to trip people up and injure them about the legs, back, shoulders and knees. People have flats these days and lifts.”

A cop by the name of PC Ward is allegedly telling pals on his Facebook page he “couldn’t wait to bash some long-haired hippies” at the G20 protests.

Says our whistleblower:

“Facebook! We need a Not In The Face Book before it’s too late.”

The case continues…

Ian Tomlinson Is Related To Jade Goody

IAN Tomlinson is now the subject of heated debate. He did not die in vain – his death is, very possibly, earning jobbing hacks more money than he earned in a lifetime as they fill space with opinions on how an innocent man was beaten up byu the polcie and then dropped dead not long after.

A smiling Amanda Platell sees it her job to tell Mail readers:

There is no way that I can defend the masked police officer caught on video striking a man on the back of his legs with a steel baton and then shoving him so hard that he fell to the ground. The man subsequently died of a heart attack.

Ian Tomlinson, New York New School Lies And Beating Up A Deaf Man

IAN Tomlinson’s death at G20 is not the only instance of police brutality.

Sure he was begging for it for wearing a Millwall top and treading on the cracks in the pavement, but he is not alone:

Gawker has this gem:

City Room finally posted this video from the New School protest that was crushed by the police earlier today. When you watch it, keep in mind that the NYPD’s spokesperson told the NYT it was “untrue that pepper spray or mace were used in effectuating the arrests.” Liar:

Menwhile in Texas:

It began with a routine traffic stop due to excessive speeding over one year ago.  The Deaf driver, Christopher Ferrell, attempted to retrieve his wallet to show the identification card regarding his deafness. The officer, J.A. Miller misinterpreted the actions for a person reaching for his gun and reacted aggressively. He grabbed the driver, swinging him around and smashed his face into the rear windshield, breaking his nose. The driver was then forced back to his seat.

The officer was disciplined with two days suspension without pay. He is currently appealing his decision.

There’s a video here.

New Video Of G20 Ian Tomlinson Being Beaten By Police

IAN Tomlinson died at the G20 protest. Pictures and video here. He had heart attack. Before it, he was hit with force on the legs and pushed hard enough to make him fall.

Here’s the second video. The police involved have yet to be identified. With all those CCTV cameras in London, why has that proved so difficult?

Not enough cameras. More cameras. Cameras on copper’s hats.

And get some Id cards and give everyone a number. What’s the copper’s number? If only someone had put thought of putting numbers on their shoulders and hats.

Still, they all the look the same. So long as the police get one of them yellow jacketed sods, who cares.

Right, Sambo?
