Indonesian man killed by own mother’s coffin falling on him

It’s quite clear – snigger – that we shouldn’t – gurgle, snort – laugh at this – tee hee – but a bloke in Indonesia – guffaw – has just been killed by his own mother’s coffin falling upon him at her funeral.

Bwahahahaha.

Err, yes, we really shouldn’t laugh at this:

An Indonesian man has died after his mother’s coffin fell from a funeral tower and crushed him during a service on the island of Sulawesi, police said on Sunday.

Funeral rites do change as we move around the world. We tend to fire the corpse or stick it in a hole in the ground. Parsis have been known to practice sky burial – chop the body up and feed it, quite literally, to the birds. Vikings stuck the body on a boat and burnt both.

So, sticking the coffin on a tower isn’t all that odd:

Samen Kondorura, 40, died when pallbearers lost their footing carrying the coffin up a bamboo ladder in the Parinding valley in North Toraja district.

The casket fell as the group hoisted it onto a lakkian – an ornately carved tower where the dead are placed before elaborate traditional funeral rites.

That lakkian is performing the function of a bier for us. A nice position where we can all see the coffin while we sing the hymns and lament the departed. Theirs is just a little higher up than our:

Mobile phone footage showed the team of men laboriously carrying the coffin to the platform at the top. When it was all but secure the ladder slipped, dropping the bearers to the ground and the coffin on top of them, to screams of horror from the mourners. Mr Samen suffered severe head injuries and died on the way to hospital.

And no, really, we should not, must not, laugh about this. Certainly not. But we do have to try and work out why every damn paper in the country is carrying this story. After all, random Indonesian man dies isn’t something that normally comes to the attention of The Times, Daily Mail and Guardian. They don’t even print most such reports that do reach them.

They reason they have all printed the story? Because they know we’ll laugh about it.

Police burning massive pile of marijuana get entire own stoned

weed Indonesia

There’s something in the air over Palmerah, a sub-district of West Jakarta. And that something is the smoke from a 3.3-ton heap of marijuana.

When masked police torched the seized mega-stash they didn’t bank on what the smoke would do to air quality. As the cloud drifted over the town, locals got a free blowback.

It turns out that you can dope an entire town without any need for mirrrors.

Indonesia jihadis says Assad is Hitler – praise indeed

YESTERDAY supporters of the Indonesia’s Islamist Prosperous and Justice Party (PKS) protested in Jakarta against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s use of violence. At the protest, party members carried a banner proclaims Assad to be like Adolf Hitler. Is this a good thing? The PKS have links to Indonesia’s Hizbut Tahrir:

Ata Abu-Rishta, the global leader of Hizb ut Tahrir…called for the “destruction” of Hindus living in Kashmir, Russians in Chechnya and Jews in Israel. “The Caliphate (global Islamic government) will liberate the countries and the people from the influence of the Kafer (non-believer) and its allies and the tyranny of its men and followers,” he said. Rishta also spoke recently at its annual conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, where, as video footage in the Panorama exposé shows, he whipped the 100,000-strong crowd into a frenzy by calling for a war on Jews

The free mass Circumcision festival in Indonesia highlights a problem

IN Indonesia a free mass circumcision sponsored by state-owned gas company PGN in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, has made us wince. It’s performed in accordance with Muslim law. Indonesia boasts more Muslims than any other – 240million. But the Jakarta Globe reports that not just Muslims are losing their foreskins.

Indonesia’s media has been buzzing with news that the Government intends to force every male in Papua New Guinea to get the snip.  This is, says a local named wonk Edison Muabuay, a Jayapura administration official, intended to combat the spread of AIDS. There is talk of “compelling evidence” that not having foreskin makes you less likely to get the disease.

It’s not the state slicing your penis to make you comply with religious doctrine and bring separatist, mainly Christian Papua into line. It’s for your own good. Really. It is.

Train operators use Total Wipeout tactics to kill fare dodgers

TO Indonesia, where the local fans of Total Wipeout are hanging concrete balls over train tracks to try to enliven the lot of the poor fare-dodging passengers who travel on the carriage roofs (or kill them and give the paying punters a sense of enormous satisfaction).

And that’s not all!

Those zany Indonesians have also coated the roofs in slippery oil and hired musicians to play a throbbing sound track (surely to perform safety songs? – ed) to give the fun still more oomph.

Anyone who survives the concrete balls, the oil and the music faces a time in the Tiswas cage known as “jail”.

And there is more!

Indonesian Bomb Teacher Blows Himself Up In Class

IN Indonesia, teaching is not what it used to be. Those who can so – those who can’t…

INDONESIAN police were locked in a tense standoff with armed students at an Islamic boarding school for a third day yesterday, after a bomb blast killed a suspected terrorist.

Police say the school is linked to cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who was jailed for 15 years last month for funding a terrorist group that was planning attacks against Westerners and political leaders.

Security forces arrived at the school at Bima town, West Nusa Tenggara province, late on Monday after a home-made bomb exploded in one of the rooms, killing a man suspected of being a Philippine-trained bomb expert.

Indonesia’s Justice Minister Wants To Export Terrorists To Attack Israel

IT’S not that Patrialis Akbar, Indonesia’s justice minister, is against all terrorists. He just doesn’t like the ones that terrorise Indonesians. He would prefer it – hey, he’d support it – if jihadis went and murdered Israelis instead. That would be much better. Bali Bombers book your return tickets:
