Brazil’s Big And Bold Dam Project Is No Avatar Plot

THE Belo Monte dam on the Xingu River in Brazil, once complete, will be the world’s third largest hydroelectric dam complex, after China’s Three Gorges Dam and the Brazilian-Paraguayan Itaipu Dam.

The £7.5bn project, first initiated in 1975, is expected to provide electricity to 23 million homes and to create an estimated 41,000 jobs. According to Brazil’s Energy Research Company (EPE), “Belo Monte enables Brazil to meet two goals: to provide electric power to boost economic growth while at the same time avoiding emissions of greenhouse gases”. Indeed, with a booming economy that grew 7.5% last year, Brazil is facing a soaring energy demand.

But the dam project has been marred by controversy from the outset. In recent years, a string of environmentalist groups and celebrities have launched campaigns against Belo Monte, saying it will ruin biodiversity and disrupt the livelihoods of indigenous populations.

The Avatar Tree Of Souls Will Save R Souls From Papa Smurf

ALL hail the Tree of Souls at Speakers’ Corner, Hyde Park, environmentalist James Cameron’s latest attempt to save the world by using lots of electricity fast.

Cameron’s Avatar dirge is on DVD. And to make the even there’s a giant interactive replica of the film’s Tree of Souls. To save the world, it’s got 20 miles of fibre optic branches that glow. It’s every bit as tragic as it sounds.

James Cameron’s Wind-Up Avatar DVD With Stephen Lang

KING of wind-powered electronic arts James Cameron releases his DVD of Avatar, the too-long blue-in-the-face, 3D enviro-flick.

Before we get to Cameron’s latest quotes on global warming, note this explanation for being a man who burns tons of fossil fuels getting his green message to the masses. And, no, it’s not a plan to use up all the oil as fast as possible so we have to confront the inconvenient truth:

So how do I cancel the paradox? To me its not paradoxical – its not even meant to be ironic. For me, film is a technical medium. And you can use a technical medium to celebrate something that is purely natural. I think you can use the most cutting edge technology available – which we did, to basically celebrate the inventiveness of nature – which we did.

We are nature. We can invent. We are beyond parody. David Chen, who interviews Cameron, is faced with the biggest, most successful director of this age. He responds to that bit of self-serving nonsense with understandable reserve:

Chen: That makes sense. So I guess your use of technology in movie making is one of the good uses, you’d say.

Cameron: I would look at it that way, yes. We’re the good guys.

The Avatar Premiere Los Angeles With The Self-Entitled James Cameron And Leona Lewis: In Pictures

TO the Avatar premiere in Los Angeles, and time to recall the words of the film’s director James Cameron, currently jetting round the world to promote his electronic marvel:

“There’s a sense of entitlement — ‘We’re here, we’re big, we’ve got the guns, we’ve got the technology, we’ve got the brains, we therefore are entitled to every damn thing on this planet’, That’s not how it works and we’re going to find out the hard way if we don’t wise up and start seeking a life that’s in balance with the natural cycles of life on earth.”

And here they come to save Gaia by limo to an air-conditioned cinema: Leona Lewis, who felt connected enough to nature to sing the title song and travels the globe promoting it.

X Factor’s Leona Lewis Sees James Cameron’s Avatar As A Message For Hypocrites

leona-lewis-earth-wardenAVATAR is James Cameron’s huge budget, carbon burning look at the future of mankind. Before we get to what X Factor singer Leona Lewis thinks of it the film for which she sings the theme song I See You, let’s hear from James Cameron. Says he – brace yourselves:

I see it as a broader metaphor, not so intensely politicised as some would make it, but rather that’s how we treat the natural world as well. There’s a sense of entitlement — ‘We’re here, we’re big, we’ve got the guns, we’ve got the technology, we’ve got the brains, we therefore are entitled to every damn thing on this planet’.

“That’s not how it works and we’re going to find out the hard way if we don’t wise up and start seeking a life that’s in balance with the natural cycles of life on earth.”

To restore the balance Cameron has helpfully created a hi-tech, fossil fuel–fed electronic look at the figure.

In Pictures: The World Premiere Of James Cameron’s Avatar

THE world premiere of the much-hyped Avatar at the Odeon, Leicester Square, attracted such seat fillers as Una Healy and Mollie King from The Saturdays, former Strictly Come Dancing prof-celeb hofer boxer Joe Calzaghe, boxer David Haye, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Kimberly Wyatt of the Pussycat Dolls. Does the calibre of the celebs reflect the quality of the film? Thankfully, also on the blue carpet was Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver, Director James Cameron, Zoe Saldana and, er, Louis Winstone. Luckily, the film is shot in new kind of 3D that makes any celebrity look even shallower. They say watching it can cure any ills. The pictures:
