The top ten dubious songs of the Jimmy Savile era

NOW that the dam has burst, and Sir Jimmy Savile stands exposed, the revelations about him and his fellow DJs confirm what many have known for years: that the pop music business of the fifties, sixties and seventies was a world in which middle-aged men surrounded themselves with young girls and boys and indulged themselves with impunity.

And the musical clues weren’t always subtle either. So as our contribution to the great debate, ladies and gentlemen/guys and gals, we present the top ten dubious songs of the Savile era…

Good Morning Little Schoolgirl – Sonny Boy Williamson (1937)

First recorded before the war, covered later by the legendary electric bluesmen, then later still by the bands of the mid-sixties British “blues boom” of the mid-sixties. This would be the template for all that followed.

Little Child – The Beatles (1963)

“Baby” and “child” were part of the rock’n’roll lexicon from the get-go, but this title nevertheless remains uniquely peculiar.

Young Girl – Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (1968)

This chart-topping Top of the Pops favourite is highly unusual, in that it actually questions the idea of “going too far”, and concludes that it might not be such a great idea after all…

Stray Cat Blues – The Rolling Stones (1968)

The 15-year-old subject of this sordid tail would later be adjusted to 16 for live performances

Vagabond Virgin – Traffic (1968)

“You were barely thirteen, so fresh on the scene…”

Born Late ’58 – Mott the Hoople (1974)

“Detonator, jail-baiter,” proclaims Overend Watts. Take the title and the release date and “do the math”.

Sick Again – Led Zeppelin (1975)

Jimmy Page’s 14-year-old girlfriend was referenced in “New Style” by the Beastie Boys (If I played guitar I’d be Jimmy page/the girls I like are underage) but Zep’s paean to juvenile groupies said it all years earlier…

Jailbait – Ted Nugent (1981)

“Jailbait’ was a popular phrase of the time, and several artists released tracks with that title, including Wishbone Ash, Nils Lofgren and Motorhead. This is Ted Nugent’s typically unsubtle take on the subject. (Well I don’t care if you’re just thirteen/You look too good to be true/ I just know that you’re probably clean
There’s one lil’ thing I got do to you.)

Lemon Incest – Serge & Charlotte Gainsbourg (1985)

The most inappropriate father-and-daughter duet since Frank and Nancy’s “Something Stupid”. Charlotte later described the single, recorded when she was 12, as a “provocation”. It is the 630th best-selling single of all time in France…

Playground Bang-a-round – Rye Spangle (2001)

OK, this is actually a Chris Morris spoof, but a gold disc would surely have awaited this glam classic back in 1973…

Name the BBC staff who let Jimmy Savile attack children and hired rebel ‘paedo’ John Peel

FOLLOWING the Jimmy Savile is a peado news, the Jimmy Savile Charitable Trust, will give the £3.7m in its coffers to “support charities that work with survivors of sexual abuse”. DJ Paul Gambaccini claimed Savile was allowed to get away with raping and sexually abusing underage girls because the Fixer threatened the ill and needy. Savile reasoned that if he were exposed the charities he worked for would suffer. So, The BBC and the newspapers kept quiet. You know, to help the kiddies.

Hands up anyone who wants the tabloids restricted and journalists licensed by the State? Lord Leveson..?

So far over 40 people have claimed they were attacked by Savile. Savile’s nephew, Guy Marsden, recalls his experiences when aged 13. He was taken to parties:

“I never saw Jimmy Savile sexually abuse any of the children, but as far as I am concerned he was part of a paedophile ring at those parties.”

Jimmy Savile and Gary Glitter’s ‘untouchable’ BBC paedo gang

KARIN Ward says Jimmy Savile attacked her when she was 14. She has told ITV News the same story that she told Newsnight. The BBC’s Newsnight dropped the story.

Karin Ward tells ITV:

“At the BBC, I told Newsnight that I saw Gary Glitter have sex with a girl in Jimmy Savile’s dressing room…in that little alcove bit. I didn’t see it completely but that’s what was going on and nobody batted an eye-lid. I also told them that I was horribly, horribly humiliated.”

Everyone knew someone raped by Jimmy Savile

JIMMY Savile sets the news agenda: the Star (“SAVILE QUIZZED BY COPS FIVES YEARS AGO”); the Daily Mail, which leads with the photographs of two women and the the headline: “WE WERE VICTIMS Of JIMMY SAVILE”; the Sun goes with “Jimmy Savile Molested Me When I was 14.”

The Mail’s women are:

Katrina Rose, 51, says she was attacked in Savile’s flat when she was 14. The BBC DJ had met Katrina’s mother through his work at Broadmore hospital. He asked if her daughter would like to see how Top of the Pops was made. He told the girl to come alone. She says:

“When he invited me to watch him record the show, I jumped at the chance as I went to stage school and wanted to be an actress. He asked that I come alone because he could only do tours for ‘special people’, so my parents gave me permission to get the train from Surrey where we lived. I walked with him from his flat in Belgravia to the BBC studios and he wore a balaclava as he said he would be mobbed by fans without it. I wasn’t worried as he was a family friend and my mother trusted him…I was sitting on a chair and he came in with the tea and sat on the sofa. He asked he if I’d had a good day.”

ChidLine founder Estzer Rantzen says she ignored Jimmy Savile child abuse stories

ESTHER Rantzen sinks her choppers into the Jimmy Savile child rapist allegations. The former BBC presenter says of her now dead BBC colleague in the ITV documentary Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile:

“We all blocked our ears to the gossip.”

That’s the same Esther Rantzen who set up ChildLine in 1986, a confidential phone service for under 19s to open up about abuse. As she said:

“There’s so much pain in life that you can’t avoid, but I don’t think there’s any cause more crucial than protecting children from the avoidable pain.”

Ken Lynch, parish councillor for Sandy, said that now that 84-year-old Jim’ll Fix It star is dead he is continuing with his demand for the brick to be taken out of the wall of the Adult Pit Stop off the A1, near Tempsford.

Why did Glencoe locals shun Jimmy Savile?

A READER writes on Jimmy Savile:

I expect he smells a lot better now he’s been buried face-down in concrete for a few months.

The BBC actually has a lot to answer for…the men in grey suits thoughts his antics were amusing and, , ‘after all old chap,’ he was only forcibly shagging “spotty common girls” from the frozen north. No “nice gals” were involved.

He bought a holiday place in Glencoe and I was told the locals simply shunned him. He had to travel to Inverness or Fort William for supplies. Whenever I asked (during Glen Coe regattas) every single query was met by a change of subject.

I was never aware of anyone so universally disliked by what are a normally warm and accepting bunch of people.

How to spot a paedophile: From Jimmy Savile and Pete Townsend

HOW do you spot a paedophile? Allegations that Jimmy Savile raped children at the BBC studios, among other places, make you wonder. When someone is called a child molester, the great unwashed eye them differently.

Pete Townshend, The Who’s back office, recalls his dalliance with thought police. In his autobiography, Who I Am, Townsend recalls his error in researching child abuse on the internet. He said the research was part of a campaign against images of child sex abuse on the web. He paid £7 with his credit card to access the child porn. It went badly. He ended up getting arrested. Townsend was placed on the sex offenders register for five years. In 2003, he was cleared of possessing illegal images of children.

He had looked but he had not downloaded. His crime was one of thought. If someone showed you a revolting image of child abuse on a piece of paper, can it be said that you downloaded it?

The Oldie’s limp saveloy enlivens the BBC’s Jimmy Savile ‘Cover Up Scandal’

THE cock of Sir Jimmy Savile may now be a shrivelled saveloy in its tilted grave that faces Scarborough’s sea, yet what Mrs Thatcher’s favourite DJ did with it and with whom is still the subject of immense fascination and conjecture.

The Oldie is now the unlikely source (via Guido) of further claims that the mummy-loving hospital worker was the subject of a BBC probe into allegations of his molestation of underage girls. A probe whose results never saw the light of day for reasons swathed in BBC beige.

Georgina Ray Is Jimmy Savile’s Daughter: The Joy Of Greasy Spoon Sex On A Rollercoaster

IS Georgina Ray, Jimmy Savile’s love child? The Sun say the woman with the straw blonde hair, shiny gold tracksuit and gibbery “arseabowt dat den” turn of phrase IS Savile’s daughter.

If she is, then who’s the mum? Is it:

Princess Diana?
Joan Collins?
David “Diddy’ Hamilton?

Georgina, of Cannock, Staffs, tells a “friend“, who tells the Sun:

“Jimmy Savile is my dad — my mum told me.”

It’s easy to believe Georgina. But Anorak sympathsies with the single mum who keen to inject a spot of pizazz into a fatherless child’s life points at the telly and says: “See him… He’s yer dad!”

Jimmy Savile Takes Princess Diana’s Secret To His Concrete Grave

WHY has Jimmy Savile’s coffin been encased in concrete?

Robert Morphet, of Bradford-based Joseph A Hey & Son, explains:

“We felt it was better to securely backfill the grave with a dry-mix of concrete for two reasons. One for security, so that the grave couldn’t and wouldn’t be opened again and secondly to provide a secure foundation for the memorial when it is placed on the grave.”

So. Nothing is of great value in the coffin?

“People may decide there is something of value but it was a steel-casket sprayed gold and I can confirm there was nothing of any value there. He was wearing his medal that he got from the marines, his cigars and his beret.”

Jimmy Savile: On Dog-Faced Jodie Marsh And Elvis Presley (Photos)

JIMMY Savile fans will be able to say “Now then” to the charismatic DJ and telly star when his coffin goes on display at the Queens Hotel in Leeds centre. The coffin will be closed. He will then be buried at the North Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough.

Anorak has delved into the archices and can now deliver a few wonderful photos of Sir James meeting Elvis Presley, and this from the Jersey Evening Post Aug 12, 2006:

FORMER Bergerac star John Nettles has told the JEP that he would have been delighted to appear at the Battle of Flowers if he had been asked. And veteran DJ Sir Jimmy Savile, a former Mr Battle, says that he would have done it for free. ‘I would have been enormously flattered to be asked, and, if available, I would have been very happy to do it,’ said actor John Nettles, who is again one of Britain’s favourite TV detectives thanks to the hugely popular Midsomer Murders. And he added: ‘I would have given any fee to charity.’ The decision by the Battle of Flowers Association at the last minute to spend £22,000 of their extra States grant of £90,000 on Jodie Marsh and X-Factor runner-up Andy Abraham has been widely criticised, but Sir Jimmy has leapt to Jodie’s defence after hearing that she had been booed by the crowd.
‘It’s not the Jode’s fault,’ he said. ‘She can’t help being what she is. If someone is going to offer you £22,000 or whatever it was, you are not going to turn it down. The Jersey organisers should not have put her in a position where she was going to get booed at the Battle of Flowers. Is Jersey the right sort of Island for somebody like the Jode? I’ve met her, and she’s a nice girl, but whoever asked for Jodie to come to Jersey did not make a good move. ‘If you get bitten by a rottweiler you can’t blame the dog. You know what they’re like. You shouldn’t be in a position where you get bitten.’
