YOU know what Celebrity Big Brother needs? Yeah, Mohamed Al-Fayed. Richard Desmond (prop. Channel Five and Princess Diana obsessed Daily Express) rubbed his magic speed dial phone and – poof! – the Fulham Pharaoh appeared to host an Egyptian-themed task in which housemates were swaddled in bandages before being told to lie down and try to get up.

Tara Reid won. Should they make Boxing Helena 2 – You Okay Mommy? – Tara’s a shoo-in for the lead role.

Madeleine McCann: I Foiled The ‘Maddie Conman’ From 300 Miles Away

MADDIE WATCH Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann: The true story of the arrest of the “Maddie fraudster” – the “Maddie conman” – Kevin Halligen, Maddie’s “James Bond spy“.

WHEN Kevin Halligen was arrested in a dispute over a bill at an Oxfordshire hotel, the UK press billed him as the “Maddie fraudster”. Halligen owned a detective company hired by Kate and Gerry McCann to find their daughter. His arrest had nothing to do the media’s Our Maddie. Halligen’s alleged fraud involves a dispute with a law firm in the US. The Sun said it found Halligen when its “investigators staked out a luxury Oxford hotel then tipped off cops”. But the man who really spotted him and tipped off the police and the press offers his account exclusively to Anorak. Christopher Winsley explains.

I FOILED THE ”MADDIE CONMAN” FROM 300 MILES AWAY

LIKE many 22-year-old students across the UK, my Sunday’s start with a spiltting headache, and very little memory from the night before. Last weekend, I regret to say, was no different. I woke up after an enjoyable evening, followed by coffee, and a trip to the local shop to buy a few newspapers to linger over throughout the day.

Madeleine McCann: Investigating The Detectives’ Failings

7677076MADELEINE McCann Watch: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at Madeleine McCann in the news – Private detectives fail, Private detectives do PI and PR and the Madeleine McCann Foundation is famous…

Daily Mail: “So why did Madeleine McCann detectives ask so few questions after major breakthrough?”

Dunno. Why?

Private detectives leading the hunt for Madeleine McCann faced questions last night after a Mail on Sunday investigation revealed apparent shortcomings in chasing a ‘strong lead’. The detectives failed to make even rudimentary inquiries before announcing a ‘significant’ development in the worldwide search for the six-year-old.

Watching the detectives… Following the news that “Victoria Beckham” possibly abducted Madeleine McCann, it occurs to the Mail that the private investigators may be clutching at dried grasses:

The Mail on Sunday, however, has established that members of Mr Edgar’s team who had visited Barcelona:

Failed to speak to anyone working at the seafood restaurant near where the agitated woman was seen at 2am.
Failed to ask the port authority about movement of boats around the time Madeleine disappeared.
Failed to ask if the mystery woman had been filmed on CCTV.
Knew nothing about the arrival of an Australian luxury yacht just after Madeleine vanished until told by British journalists, who gave them the captain’s mobile phone number.
Failed to interview anyone at a nearby dockside bar where, according to Mr Edgar, the mystery woman was later seen drinking.
Failed to ask British diplomats in Spain for advice before or during the visit.

* Succeeded in getting the missing child back in the news and kickstarting the belated Third Summer of Our Maddie. They say PI. Some say PR.

Last night Mr Edgar said: ‘We are not above criticism and I take responsibility for any shortcomings. If somebody has not done what they should have done, that’s my job to deal with that.’

Madeleine McCann Is Hijacked

5911113MADELEINE McCann Watch: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at Madeleine McCann in the news – The ‘Madeleine Foundation’ leaflet Kate And Gerry McCanns’ home town. It’s the Third Summer of Maddie and the ghouls are conducting a witch hunt…

The Sun: “Maddie villagers get ‘McCanns did it’ letter”

THE parents of Madeleine McCann were angry and upset yesterday after neighbours were sent leaflets claiming they were to blame for her death. Vile campaigners put copies of the four-page publication through every door in their home village of Rothley, Leics.

Produced by the “Madeleine Foundation”, it included “Ten Reasons Why Madeleine McCann was Not Abducted”. ..

There is no evidence that she was. And – get this – no evidence that she wasn’t. There is no proof of any crime. Madeleine McCann is missing.

The group, which claims wildly that Kate killed Maddie and Gerry helped hide the body, added “Reasons Why Her Parents Should Be Prosecuted.”

Kate and Gerry McCann are innocent. This claim is disgusting and unwarranted – unless it is fame you seek?

Its secretary is disgraced solicitor Anthony Bennett whose bid to bring a private prosecution against the McCanns last year was thrown out of court.

Sunday Express: “WILL MADDY NOW BE FOUND?”

It’s the Third Summer of Our Maddie, and the Sunday Express senses hope in news that a child, now aged 8, has been found in Panama?

“New hope for girl as McCann kidnap girl returns after 6 years.”

People can come back. But is the link to Our Maddie relevant or just a cynical ploy to spin the story and create front-page sensation?

Allison Pearson: The Sword, The Money Or The Poison Pen

ALLISON Pearson, of the Daily Mail, is still talking about those City “spivs” and how they are, well, just so worthless:

Throughout the boom years, the bankers justified their stellar incomes by saying they were working heroic hours to help bring greater prosperity to us all. Oh, really? Try telling that to a soldier who has spent 180 days dodging mortars in Helmand and dreamt of nothing more than enjoying a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken in front of the TV with the family he adores.

Most bankers never have to justify their incomes, wages being a matter of market rates. And do not soldiers dream of owning islands, flying first class and watching their football team play on a massive plasma screen? Do bankers eat KFC?

Still:
