Arsenal: Tierney checks on Leeds United ‘cheat’ Alioski after Pepe floors him with ‘headbutt’

Alioski

Working under the premise that scoring a goal is for glory-hunters who don’t fully understand the nuances of the game, Arsenal achieved another glorious 0 in a 0-0 draw with Leeds United. With Leeds already on top, and Arsenal accidentally almost scoring – “Pepe inadvertently hit the crossbar with an attempted cross from the left” (sources Arsenal.com) – Pepe was sent off for the first time in his career. What did he do?

Arsenal.com describes the incident thus:

Mikel Arteta brought on Reiss Nelson at half-time but our gameplan was undermined when Pepe was sent off by Anthony Taylor once the referee had checked footage of his altercation with Alioski.

What kind of ‘altercation” is dealt with by the official Leeds United website:

Mikel Arteta went to his bench during the interval, bringing on Reiss Nelson with Willian departing. Just four minutes into the half, Pepe would join his teammate in the dressing room by getting a red card, for head butting Alioski.

Pepe is a pillock. And that headbutt? Is Alioskji ok? Broken nose. Concussion? Worse?! The BBC tells us:

The Ivorian, who has rarely justified his £75m fee, had a running battle with Alioski and eventually lost his patience with a ‘football headbutt’.

Alioski threw himself to the ground…

A “football headbutt” is when you don’t actually headbutt someone?

After the match former Glasgow Celtic player Keiran Tierney was keen to offer advice to the stricken Alioski:

Football – why do we bother?

Leeds United sign Rodrigo for club record fee

Leeds United have invested a club-record fee of £26m in former Bolton Wanderers hopeful Rodrigo. The Brazil-born Spanish international, 29, joins Leeds from Valencia on a four-year contract. The signing breaks Leeds’ previous record transfer – the £18m they paid West Ham for Rio Ferdinand in 2000.

Rodrigo’s arrival is what pundits call ‘a statement of intent’ – the intent being not be relegated from the Premier League having spent 16 seasons trying to get back into it. Leeds were by far and away the best side in the Championship for the past two seasons, contriving to miss promotion two years ago but securing it last season. Marcelo Bielsa has moulded an exiting team. But up front they need help. Patrick Bamford is a talented player but lacks the pace and guile to regularly challenge top-flight defences. Rodrigo it is, then. He should be enough to keep them above fellow promoted sides, Fulham and West Brom, both decent bets for relegation.

Manchester United and Leeds great Eric Cantona’s UEFA awards speech in full

cantona

Eric Cantona was invited to say a few words before the 2019-20 Champions League draw in Monaco. That speech in full:

“As flies to wanton boys we are for the gods, they kill us for their sport.

“Soon the science will not only be able to slow down the ageing of the cells, soon the science will fix the cells to the state and so we will become eternal.

“Only accidents, crimes, wars, will still kill us but unfortunately, crimes, wars, will multiply.

“I love football. Thank you.”

And now for the classified results: Barking 1 – Braintree…

New Leeds United badge looks like an advert for Gaviscon

The news Leeds United badge – the one on which the club claims to have consulted 10,000 people (how many of whom are Leeds fans is not know but I’d guess none) – looks like…the design on a bottle of Gaviscon, the treatment for upset stomachs.

Leeds United Balls: Who Placed Secret Cameras In The Toilets And The Boardroom?

LEEDS United’s shiny new owner Massimo Cellino is a thorough sort. Before moving in at Elland Road he ordered a security sweep of the club stadium, which turned up hidden recording devices in both the boardroom and the toilets.

Cellino ordered the sweep after seeing the Football League’s decision to block his Leeds takeover overturned last week, with a private security firm finding several covert cameras dotted around the stadium which no-one appears to know anything about.

English football club mottos: the Latin, the motivators and the downright crap

NEWS that Everton Football Club™ has decided to modernise its historic badge, and in the process jettison its famous Latin motto, has caused not altogether unpredictable outrage among the Goodison Faithful ™.

Motto1

The motto in question translates as ‘Nothing but the best’, so the timing of its retirement is unfortunate, coinciding as it does with a period of uncertainty following the departure of the ‘Moysiah’ to Old Trafford.

All of which begs the question of whether some other long-established club mottos and slogans are fit for purpose in the modern game. A select few still favour the classical Latin, so we will consider them first.

Leeds United fan Aaron Cawley got away with it because he upset the elite boat races

AARON Cawley got away it it. The Leeds United fan has been sentenced to 16-weeks prison for assaulting Kris Kirkland, the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper. That Cawley committed a crime before 28,581 witnesses (plus playing staff and officials) and the TV cameras marks him out a special kind of pillock. Prison might be where he’s safest.

What we know about Leeds United fan Aaron Cawley

LEEDS United. They’ll chant! They’ll shout! They’ll knock your keeper out! It’s Leeds United!…

Some Leeds fans will doubtless revel in the antics of Aaron Cawley, who ran onto the pitch and slapped Sheffield Wednesday Chris Kirkland in the face. When Leeds United equalised, Crawley attacked a big professional athlete who was looking the other way.

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock said Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland “went down like a tonne of bricks”. But, come on, it looked like a foul…

The BBC Turns Leeds United’s Simon Grayson Into A Joke

LEEDS United manager Simon Grayson will not be used to illustrate how irony is dead in the age of the internet and soundbites.Context is all.

The BBC reports:

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson has also denied being interested in taking charge at the King Power Stadium.

He said: “I was a legend down there. It’s a club that’s very close to my heart but this club is far closer to my heart. I’ve had an affiliation with Leicester in the past, but my sole aim is to do well for Leeds. I’m totally focused on Leeds and that focus has never dwindled during my time at the club. ‘m delighted things are going well here and I want to continue doing the job I’ve set out to do.”

Leeds United Fans Know That Sex With Ken Bates Is Like Beating Hull

KEN Bates, the beared foemr Chelsea owner who took over at Leeds United, has a few tips for the fans who want him out of the Yorkshire club:

“I saved your club in 2005 and 2007 when nobody else would. The rebuilding of Leeds United is a bit like sex. In an age of instant gratification, Leeds United is having a long, drawn-out affair with plenty of foreplay and slow arousal. We’re in this for the long term. We may have had two disappointing results, but we will get there – we are building for the future.”

Leeds United Beat Manchester United In 27 Pictures

JERMAINE Beckford scores the 19th minute winner against Manchester United and Leeds United march on in the FA Cup. Manchester United had not been beaten a lower-division side during Sir Alex Ferguson’s 23-year reign as manager. In 1984, Bournemouth beat them 2-0.

Leeds United's Jermaine Beckford (centre) scores his sides first goal of the game

Because Man United were playing at home, the game was on the telly and Leeds scored in the middle of first half, it meant lots of Man U fans (between sanwhiches and trips to the club shop) saw the goal – save for a few thousand who left early to miss the rush back to London (the Jubilee Line is shut on the Tube at the weekends). Enjoy these pictures of the match…

How Lancashire Football Took Over The National Game

burnleyplay-offBURNLEY’S return to the top flight of English football was highly symbolic.
First, it came perfectly in time for the half-century commemoration of the legendary Clarets side that won the first division championship in 1960. (That’s the proper national title, by the way, not the puffed-up division three that calls itself “League One”.)

Secondly, it brings the total number of Lancashire clubs in the Premier League to eight. That’s an extraordinary 40 per cent.

Thirdly, it came at the expense of Sheffield United, who, by finishing third in the second tier of English football, hold the distinction of being Yorkshire’s burnley1960second best team, above local rivals Sheffield Wednesday, and the county’s most recent national champions Leeds United, whose own play-off defeat leaves them languishing in the third tier for another year. Hull clung on to Premier status by the skin of their teeth, making them Yorkshire’s top dogs for another season.

In the past 50 seasons, starting with Burnley’s historic triumph, and finishing with Manchester United’s latest title, Lancashire clubs have won the national championship no fewer than 33 times. In that period, Yorkshire lancashireclubs – or rather one Yorkshire club – have won just three. (Leeds United in 1969, 1974 and 1992. They are also the only Yorkshire club to win it since the war.)

Of course, Yorkshire has fared no worse than many other counties. In fact it is one of the most successful historically, with Huddersfield Town and the two Sheffield sides winning eight titles between them in all.

But the gulf between the two sports-mad counties is quite remarkable nevertheless.

You might argue that a large amount of Yorkshire’s sporting energy is channeled into rugby league. And you would be right. Over the last 50 sealeedssons the national championship has been won an impressive 23 times by Yorkshire clubs.

… And 27 times by teams from Lancashire.

Close, as they say, but no cigar.
