War In Libya: A Made-For-Media Nostalgic Snuff Movie

LIBYA rules the news cycle. The Indy declares from its front page “The UN Strikes Back“, seemingly ignorant of the fact that the UN has no air force and is reliant on the French, British and American to enforce its arbitrary decrees.

The NoTW’s front-page headline focuses on national identity. It is bellicose and glorying in death and destruction:

“BLOWN TO BRITS”

Adding:

“Our sub sinks despot’s thugs with 3000lb missiles”

There’ also the offer to “watch plane explode“. Yayy! Pull up a chair. Grab some popcorn. Watch a Libyan die.

Gaddafi Might Laugh: Libya Carved Up By Belgium And Friends

COLONEL Gaddafi, the old gangster, might laugh. This is how his country is being carved up by the great and good. The leaders of countries various held a chat for the Support of the Libyan People at the Elysee Palace in Paris, France.

All the big knobs were there – not least of all Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme (he’s the head of a country that in February became the title holder of the longest period any country has gone without a government – longer than Iraq).

The Libyan Rebels Are Revealed: Mustafa Abdel Jalil’s Government Of Chance

COLONEL Muammar Gaddafi is all set to crush the rebels. President Obama has done nothing other than erode the power of the West with his torpor. But one question: who are the rebels? Let’s see:

The BBC says they are the “opposition”.

Canadian TV says the spokesman is one Mustafa Gheriani. Al Jazeera says he’s the spokesman for the “February 17th Coalition, an anti-government group”.

So. What of the Transitional National Council in Benghazi?

And then there is the National Libyan Council:

Hafiz Ghoga, a spokesman for the council based in Benghazi, told a news conference that Gaddafi was using “African mercenaries in Libyan cities” which amounted to an invasion of the oil producing North African nation. We call for specific attacks on strongholds of these mercenaries,” he said, but added: “The presence of any foreign forces on Libyan soil is strongly opposed. There is a big difference between this and strategic air strikes.”

What are the aims of the council?

“The council declares it is the sole representative all over Libya,” former justice minister Mustafa Abdel Jalil told a news conference…

Libya And The IRA: Gaddafi’s EU And Sinn Fein Friends Vote Against No-Fly Zone

GADDAFI’S Libya still has some pals in the European Union. The EU press office tell us:

“‘EU governments need to stand ready for a decision in the UN Security Council on further measures, including the possibility of a no-fly zone’,” in compliance with a UN mandate and coordination with the Arab League and the African Union stressed MEPs in a widely-backed resolution (584 in favour, 18 against, 18 abstentions). During the debate, only the GUE/NGL group was against this idea.”

Topple The Tyrants Squat Gaddafi’s London Mansion: Photos

COLONEL Gaddafi, the squatter king of Libya, is watching his son Saif’s multi-million pound home in London being occupied by a squatting collective called “Topple The Tyrants”. The Spokesman is calling himself Montgomery Jones. Any actual Libyans in the house on Hampstead’s borders? Jones says “we have people from the Middle East and we’re hoping to disseminate the protests more widely”.

Will This Wiki Find Plagiarism In Saif Gaddafi’s PhD Thesis?

DID Saif-al -Islam, Colonel Gaddafi’s son last seen talking of civil war in Libya at no risk to himself, plagiarise his Ph.D in economics from the LSE?

If he did cheat then Saif’s current job as dad’s next in line must be in jeopardy. Saif may need to prove his intellect in some other way, say, by working out how many big sticks it takes to secure your billions, investing in his wardobe or juggling.

As a result of the school’s links with Libya, Sir Howard Davies has resigned as the director of the London School of Economics. He says:

“I have concluded that it would be right for me to step down even though I know that this will cause difficulty for the institution I have come to love. The short point is that I am responsible for the school’s reputation, and that has suffered.”

Tony Blair’s Role In Colonel Gaddafi’s Downfall, By Cherie Blair

CHERIE Blair, wife of Colonel Gaddafi glad-hander Tony Blair, was been on ITV’s This Morning show telling us how awful the Libyan despot is. She goes on to say that she does not want to meddle and tell the Prime Minister what to do.

This is the same Cherie Blair who said she can sympathise with Palestinian, jihadis and Islamist suicide bombers who attack Israel. (She made her thoughts known after 19 people, including schoolchildren, had been murdered by a bomber on a Jerusalem bus.)

In the video below you  can hear her talking about strengthening Africa’s legal systems.

Nelly Furtado Donates Gaddafi Concert Money To Sting

COLONEL Muammar Gaddafi and his kids in Libya (or the Caribbean and London – whichever is closer) love a good party. When Mickey Rouke and John Galliano get to play the Libyan dictator in film, they will be able to co-star with the likes of Nelly Furtado, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Usher, who have all been hired to perform for the family Gaddafi in recent years.

It should be a great show – perhaps the most tortuous musical since Godspell.

The Three Most Stupid Things Said About Libya By Western Experts

LIBYA is not so bad. It’s not bad bad. It’s not like, say, Poland under the Nazis, or Iran.

Martin Kramer has compiled a list of the three most stupid things Western boffins have said after visiting Gaddafi’s Libya.

3. The Shores of Tripoli by Stephen Walt:

“Libya doesn’t feel like other police states that I have visited.”

Libya: The SAS Have Gaddafi In Their Sights: But What’s The Exit Strategy?

THERE’S a US warship off the coast of Libya. The American Sixth Fleet is in the area – at least one aircraft carrier and attendant ships. The SAS are in the country. We told you that before anyone else.

Colonel Gaddafi will comply and leave or else be made to go.

The SAS are not going to leave soon.

But when their do leave, they had best have an exit strategy this time.

Do our politicians have a plan other than to get rich and keep their hands clean?

SAS Poised To Grab Gaddifi’s Collar: British Troops Hunting Libyan Leader

LIBYA and Gaddafi: THE SAS home camp in Hereford saw a lot of activity on Wednesday and Thursday this week and Old Man Anorak got a couple of tips one of the UK’s elite fighting units was likely to be heading south.

It was decided to say nothing and wait and see. Not a long wait since last evening the announcement was made two Hercules aircraft had flown into the Libyan desert south of Benghazi to airlift civilian oil-workers. Last night’s news came after the “extractions” , the arrival of the first plane in Malta and hinted of a bridgehead airstrip where the civilians had been told to assemble.

Libya: Gaddafi Will Never Make It The Hague

MUAMMAR GADDAFI says he will die a martyr, in Libya, or Venezuela, or Scotland. He won’t make it to The Hague alive. One court of law for all mankind is a weirdness and cause for concern. But this comment from Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor, shows how weak his organisation is:

“The decision to do justice in Libya should be taken by the Libyan people. Currently, Libya is not a State Party to the Rome Statute. Therefore, intervention by the ICC on the alleged crimes committed in Libya can occur only if the Libyan authorities accept the jurisdiction of the Court, (through article 12(3) of the Rome Statute). In the absence of such step, the United Nations Security Council can decide to refer the situation to the Court. The Office of the Prosecutor will act only after either decision is taken”.

Saudi Arabia Can’t Solve Libya: The Myth Of Spare Oil Capacity

THE talk in the news is that if Libya’s oil stays offline – it’s the world’s 12th largest producer – Saudi Arabia can make up for any short fall. But it’s not that easy. Barclays Capital’s Amrita Sen explains:

Firstly, the grades and quality of crude available from Saudi Arabia [are] likely to be different from Libya. For instance, the volume-weighted average of Libyan grades would have an API of around 37-38, while the current shut in Saudi production is biased towards medium crude. Moreover, Libyan crude is sweeter…

Prompt Brent markets have also flipped into slight backwardation, a trend we expect to continue in the short term, if sourcing immediate supplies is the concern. Moreover, the time taken to bring those Saudi barrels to the market is likely to be significantly longer compared to the ongoing Libyan production. Thus, the concept of a barrel for barrel replacement is not a correct one.

Gregor MacDonald explains spare capacity theory:

Of course, “everyone knows” that OPEC is sitting on lots of oil. However, as has been discussed here, at The Oil Drum, and elsewhere it remains decidedly unclear whether Saudi Arabia can indeed turn on extra taps at will. But the problems for world supply of oil do not merely end with production capacity. Even if OPEC is indeed sitting on 1-3 mbpd of spare capacity, it’s not clear for how long they can both increase production, and export that production to the world. Not only has Saudi Arabia’s production not increased in the past five years, but, Saudi is increasingly using its own oil for its own population. The result? Flat, to declining exports of oil from Saudi Arabia.

Spare Capacity Theory, therefore, looks alot like an unproven consensus reality. I’d like to define it as follows:

Spare Capacity Theorythe assumption among western bankers, policy makers, economists, and stock markets that OPEC producers can lift oil production at will, and, export all of that spare production to world consumers.

Graphic: Brent crude prices rise.

Gaddafi’s Killer Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi Heads Back To Safety Of Scottish Jail

LIBYA and The Gaddafi Duck: The Daily Probe had it right back in 2004 as the world shook hands with the Libyan des/chocolate tea/pot and made profitable arms and oil deals.

North Africa’s vicious (and maddest) old gal Imelda Gaddifi gets ready for a quick hat-buying trip to London and a holiday with old pal Tony Blair.
Anyone heard anything from the Middle East Envoy lately?

It;s rumoured Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi would like his old rooms back at the very comfortable suite built for him inside Greenock Jail, Scotland now Libya’s former justice minister has blown the myth of innocence out of the firmament and told a Swedish newspaper Colonel Gaddafi personally ordered the Lockerbie bombing.

Mustafa Abdel-Jalil told Expressen he had proof the Libyan leader was behind the bombing of Pan AM flight 103, which killed 270 people in 1988…and instructed Megrahi to organise it. He has yet to produce that proof.

Britain’s worst ever convicted mass murderer may now only have one safe house…back in Scotland. There is as yet no word on how Scottish legal services (duty-bound to keep an eye on the released bomber) are going to manage the necessary home visit to Tripoli.

Ashes to ashes? – AW

The Death Throes Of Civilisation: Egypt, Tunisia, Libya And Belgium

WHAT we are watching, therefore, is death throes – Tunisia, Egypt, Libya … the collapse always starts at the fringes. But add Belgium, a country that has now broken the world record for the most number of days without a government – and also add Greece. Ireland will follow shortly, and behind that, Portugal, Spain and then who knows … Italy, maybe. Even Germany. Dark things are happening there.

Greece, needless to say, is dead man walking, or more like live country rioting. Violent clashes, in a long line of violent clashes, broke out again yesterday – between protesters and the police. Now there’s a surprise. Police have a punch-up with rioters. Well, I never.

Gaddafi Knocked Out For Airborne Face Lift Flight To Venezuela

LIBYA: When Foreign Secretary William Hague said Colonel Gaddafi was in Venuezla, we believed him. If Hague says it’s true it must be true. Of course the woman he overheard revealing Gaddafi’s travel plans to the pigeons in the shopping precinct might not be the best source.

And it not only turns out that the old actor is in Libya but that if he does head to Venezuela he will be drugged – possibly anesthetized for an in-flight face lift:

Only a few days ago, as Colonel Muammar Gaddafi faced the wrath of his own people, he met with an old Arab acquaintance and spent 20 minutes out of four hours asking him if he knew of a good surgeon to lift his face.

As Wikileaks told us:

Qadhafi appears to rely heavily on XXXXXXXXXXXX and reportedly cannot travel with his senior Ukrainian nurse, Galyna XXXXXXXXXXXX. He also appears to have an intense dislike or fear of staying on upper floors, reportedly prefers not to fly over water, and seems to enjoy horse racing and flamenco dancing.

If any cruisers out there see a man wearing  a huge taffeta dress, sat on a rocking horse and holding an umbrella as the boat heads to the Americas, let us know. And we’ll tell William Hague’s pigeon fancier…

Passports Are No Good In Libya

CNN’s Ben Wedeman is the first Western journalist to enter Libya:

“Your passports please,” said the young man in civilian clothing toting an AK-47 at the Libyan border. “For what?” responded our driver, Saleh, a burly, bearded man who had picked us up just moments before. “There is no government. What is the point?” He pulled away with a dismissive laugh.

On the Libyan side, there were no officials, no passport control, no customs. I’ve seen this before. In Afghanistan after the route of the Taliban, in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Government authority suddenly evaporates. It’s exhilarating on one level; its whiff of chaos disconcerting on another.

Libya’s Umbrella Revolution: Ode To The Gaddafi Brolly

COLONEL Gaddafi is a bit special:

King of Kings Gaddafi Stands On His Pedestal As Libya Despairs

LIBYA: Worry yet note people of the Arab lands for your King is still on the golden sands:

As Gaddafi told us in 2009:

I am the leader of the Arab leaders, the king of kings of Africa and the imam of the Muslims.

The King of kings is on the telly. From his throne in the back of a van, he pokes his head out the side door, unfurls a brolly to keep his drown from getting wet and says:

“I am here to show that I am in Tripoli and not in Venezuela. Don’t believe those misleading dog stations.”

Libya: BP Exposed As Gaddafi Mistakes Own People For Yvonne Fletcher

LIBYA: Is it a good time to invest? BP secured a £900m deal with Gaddafi in 2007. BP has now suspended drilling.

Wonder how BP’s deal with the Russians will fare? The trouble with doing deals with despots is that they might one day need to leave the area quickly. Right now Gadaffi is shooting at his countrymen, just as his countrymen once murdered Yvonne Fletcher and 270 people on a plane flying over Lockerbie.

Gaddafi Murders More Than He Killed At Lockerbie: Who Speaks For Them?

COLONEL Gaddafi has ordered his own people to be murdered. The reports are of more than 300 dead. The world is outraged. But that number is not far off the 270 murdered in the Lockerbie bombing. Is the world still outraged by that? Are our political elite still demanding action on that?

On 21 December 1988, Pan Am flight 103 was blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland. Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi was head of security for Libyan Arab Airlines. In 2001, he was sentenced at a Scottish court sitting in a disused US air base, Camp Zeist, in the Netherlands.

Libya admitted responsibility and paid compensation to the victims. Al-Megrahi said he was innocent. But his appeal was never heard. He dropped it.

Huge Vulture Hangs Over Glasgow

GANDALF, the seven-year-old female Ruppell’s Griffon vulture called Gandalf, is on the loose in the skies over Glasgow. Gandalf has escaped the World of Wings in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.

Warning: If you’re feeling a bit poorly in Govan and thinking of lying down on a park bench to recuperate after a session celebrating the TV working or finding matching socks, might be best not to.

World of Wings director David Ritchie tells the BBC:

“She was taking part in her daily display and started to soar. She got caught in the wind and just went higher and higher until she disappeared.”

Colonel Gaddafi Fears Obama’s Death

UPDATES thick and fast on the Barack Obama Death Cult as Colonel Gaddafi opens the Libyan chapter:

“I fear that they could liquidate this young man or force him to submit to their imperialist policies.

“Obama is a flicker of hope in the middle of the imperialist darkness. There is a fear that they would liquidate him as they liquidated Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln.”
