First penis transplant let’s patients go larger

Thomas Manning, 64, who lost his penis to cancer has received a penis transplant. If you could get one, would you go larger?

Relatives of the donor involved in the first successful penis transplant in the U.S. say they are opting to remain anonymous. Alexandra Glazier, CEO of the New England Organ Bank, says the family of the donor – who had died – is praying for recipient Thomas Manning’s continued recover. Glazier says the family indicates that Manning’s well-being is helping them cope as they mourn the loss of their loved one.

If you get a new penis, do you go for one larger than the one you had before, or is it just another organ, so you need a familiar fit?

Parasitic tapeworm with cancer kills man by cancer

This is an adult Taenia saginata tapeworm.

This is an adult Taenia saginata tapeworm.

The 41-year-old Colombian man was HIV positive. What killed him, as reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, was the cancer he caught from the parasitic tapeworm.

The US Centres for Disease Control and the UK’s Natural History Museum diagnosed the unusual type of cancer. Dr Atis Muehlenbachs, who discovered the oddity, says: “It didn’t really make sense… this had been the most unusual case”.

The tumours appeared to be normal and some were more than 4cm across and found in his lungs and liver. But after further inspection, the infected cells were found to be a tenth of the size of normal human cells. Molecular testing identified high levels of tapeworm DNA in the tumours. The patient was unable to be treated by the time doctors had identified what the tumours were. He died three days after the worm DNA was discovered.

The worm tissue came from the dwarf tapeworms, known as Hymenlopis nana, which is a specialism of Dr Peter Oslon from the Natural History Museum. He said: “It is able to carry out its whole lifecycle in one host and that is absolutely unique.”

And absolutely hideous.

Parasitic tapeworm with cancer kills man.

Parrot fashion

Parrot fashion

Ted Richards has inked his face and eyeballs to look more like his pet parrots Ellie and Teaka. Last month he had his ears cut off. Those ears are now preserved in resin. To keep his glasses on, Ted has had transdermals inserted at the sides of his head.

“I think it looks really great,” he tells the Bristol Post. “I love it. It’s the best thing that has happened to me. I am so happy it’s unreal, I can’t stop looking in the mirror.”

Isn’t that what budgies do?

Man sacked from pork roll factory for excessive farting and uncontrollable diarrhea

trenton farterLouann Clem of Trenton, New Jersey, is suing her employer Case Pork Roll Co., for firing her husband Rich for excessive farting. The Clems told the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), but they weren’t interested. Farters are not yet a recognised minority group.

So the Clems are suing. Their law suit says Rich’s gastric bypass surgery led to “extreme gas and uncontrollable diarrhea.” They allege company owner Thomas Dolan began giving them a hard time. The Clems say he told them:

“We have to do something about Rich. This can’t go on.”

“Why is Rich having these side effects?”

“Is Rich following his doctor’s recommendations?”

“We can’t run an office and have visitors with the odor in the office.”

“Tell Rich that we are getting complaints from visitors who have problems with the odors.”

The company’s owner says the Clems weren’t fired. They say the Clems refused a pay cut when the company’s fortunes declined.

We say, ‘What the hell are pork rolls made from?’

Watch: scientist hasn’t washed for 12 Years uses bacteria to ‘stay’ clean

American scientist Dave Whitlock says:

“No one did clinical trials on people taking showers every day. I have not taken a shower in 12 years.”

(Via Oddity Central):

….In fact, he says that the chemicals in our soaps and shampoos have destroyed all the friendly bacteria that once inhabited our skin and kept us clean.

Whitlock first started thinking about good bacteria when a woman he was dating asked him why horses liked to roll around in the dirt during summer.

No plumbing in the stable?

“The only way that horses could evolve this behavior was if they had substantial evolutionary benefits from it,” Whitlock explained. That’s when he realised that for the horses, this was actually a way of keeping clean.

Until then, no one had considered that skin bacteria was important and could be helpful to the body. “I didn’t have a biology degree – I wasn’t at an institution that was renowned for its biological research,” Whitlock said. “And I was proposing something completely off the wall.” But he went ahead and invented a one-of-a-kind spray – called ‘Mother Dirt AO+ Mist’ – consisting of ‘good’ bacteria.

Whether or not he scored another date is not known.

Sex: woman has 6 spontaneous orgasms every day in her foot

feet sex orgasm

Do you suffer from Foot Orgasm Syndrome (FOS)?Dr. Justin Lehmiller reports on on those who endure /enjoy orgasms via their feet:

“Mrs. A” (as she is identified in the case report) was having 5-6 orgasms per day in her left foot that were very similar in nature to orgasms she had experienced through genital stimulation; however, they were typically a bit shorter than a vaginal/clitoral orgasm, lasting 5-6 seconds before cutting off abruptly. These foot orgasms occurred suddenly and spontaneously—no sexual desire or arousal necessary. In addition, while they originated in the left foot, the orgasmic sensations traveled to other areas of the body, including up the left leg and to the vagina, and she sometimes experienced vaginal lubrication along with these orgasms.

Belgian state agrees to kill depressed woman who failed at suicide

belgium depressed suicide

The story in Newsweek is headlined:

Healthy 24-year-old granted right to die in Belgium.

On what measure is a woman who wants to die healthy?

Newsweek reports:

Doctors in Belgium are granting a 24-year-old woman who is suffering from depression but is otherwise healthy the right to die as she qualifies for euthanasia under the Belgian law, even though she does not have a terminal or life-threatening illness.

Aside from the poor mental health the woman is healthy. Or to ou it another way, apart from the crippling illness the patient is perfectly fine.

The 24-year-old woman, known simply as Laura, has been given the go-ahead by health professionals in Belgium to receive a lethal injection after spending both her childhood and adult life suffering from “suicidal thoughts”, she told local Belgian media.

Laura has been a patient of a psychiatric institution since the age of 21 and says she has previously tried to kill herself on several occasions. She told journalists: “Death feels to me not as a choice. If I had a choice, I would choose a bearable life, but I have done everything and that was unsuccessful.” The date of Laura’s death is yet to be decided.

Belgium passed a law to legalise euthanasia in 2002, the second country in the world to do so after the Netherlands. The law states that Belgian doctors can “help patients” to end their lives if they freely express a wish to die because they are suffering from intractable and unbearable pain.

Do we understand her suffering?

Unconscious colonoscopy patient records medics mocking his penis

The man anesthetized for a colonoscopy in Reston, Virginia somehow managed to get his smartphone into the theatre and enable it to record the anesthesiologist and other medics insulting him. The patient says he pressed ‘record’ “to capture the instructions his doctor would give him after the procedure.” But whn he saw the tape, he decided to sue. And he won. He’s been awarded $100,000 for defamation, $200,000 for medical malpractice, and $200,000 in punitive damages.

The Washington Post:

“After five minutes of talking to you in pre-op,” the anesthesiologist (Tiffany M. Ingham, 42) told the sedated patient, “I wanted to punch you in the face and man you up a little bit,” she was recorded saying.

When a medical assistant noted the man had a rash (on his penis, which he previously mentioned to the Ingham), the anesthesiologist warned her not to touch it, saying she might get “some syphilis on your arm or something,” then added, “It’s probably tuberculosis in the penis, so you’ll be all right.”

When the assistant noted that the man reported getting queasy when watching a needle placed in his arm, the anesthesiologist remarked on the recording, “Well, why are you looking then, retard?”

…The discussion soon turned to the rash on the man’s penis, followed by the comments implying that the man had syphilis or tuberculosis. The doctors then discussed “misleading and avoiding” the man after he awoke, and Shah reportedly told an assistant to convince the man that he had spoken with Shah and “you just don’t remember it.” Ingham suggested Shah receive an urgent “fake page” and said, “I’ve done the fake page before,” the complaint states. “Round and round we go. Wheel of annoying patients we go. Where it’ll land, nobody knows,” Ingham reportedly said.

Ingham then mocked the man for attending Mary Washington College, once an all-women’s school, and wondered aloud whether her patient was gay, the suit states. Then the anesthesiologist said, “I’m going to mark ‘hemorrhoids’ even though we don’t see them and probably won’t,” and did write a diagnosis of hemorrhoids on the man’s chart, which the lawsuit said was a falsification of medical records.

Doctors find 50-year-old foetus inside 92-year-old woman

fetus woman 50 years old

It was news to the 92-year-old Chilean woman that a 50-year-old foetus was inside her abdomen. The BBC says that after a fall, doctors x-rayed the woman. They found no broken bones – but they did discover a calcified fetus weighing 4.4 lb.

Inquisitr explains:

Known as a lithopedion, sometimes called a “stomach rock” or a “stone child,” this is a rare occurrence affecting just a few women. “Litho” comes from the Greek word that means “stone,” and the suffix “pedion” (also Greek) means “child.” This happens when the fertilized egg is implanted outside of the uterus (known as an ectopic pregnancy).

The medics did not remove the foetus.

Well, she’d not be the first woman to have a middle-aged man invading her personal space.

Man with first penile transplant gets lover pregnant

The 21-year-old South African who became the recipient of the world’s first penile transplant is to become a father – at age 18 he was let with just 1cm of his penis after a circumcision. The “transplant worked” says Andre van der Merwe, the surgeon who helped perform the nine-hour transplant at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital.

Dr Van der Merwe tells the BBC:

“This is what we intended, that he should be able to stand up and be able to urinate and have intercourse, so it is a milestone for him.”

The jokes write themselves. But they would pale against the human ingenuity, which really is incredible.

Watch a man play the guitar as surgeons operate on his brain

Kulkamp Dias tells The Telegraph:

“I played six soongs at certain times. My right hand was a bit weaker because that was the side that they were operating on. So I stopped and rested. I was interspersing songs and talking with them… The doctors asked me to repeat one of the country songs, so I even had an encore.”

Robo-ass: Patrick gets his prostate examined hundreds of times a year

Patrick the prostate ass

Meet Patrick, the “simulated patient that talks to medical students while offering real-time feedback about the virtual prostate exam he’s receiving.” Patrick is the voice of a robotic backside:

Medical Daily reports:

Patrick serves a dual purpose: personal and professional. Personally, he comes equipped with software that enables him to interact emotionally with the student and voice any concerns he has about the procedure. Dr. Benjamin Lok, one of the program’s designers, says the interpersonal relationship Patrick helps foster is invaluable from a practicing perspective. “This virtual human patient can talk to the learner, expresses fears and concerns about the prostate exam, and presents a realistic patient encounter,” Lok told Geekosystem.

The other purpose he serves is functional. Patrick is endowed with force sensors, which can alert the student when he or she is being too aggressive, and can report how thorough the student was in his or her examination.

“Consider this,” Lok said, “how would a medical student know if they are doing a good prostate exam? Currently it is impossible for the educator to gauge performance. This simulation provides performance, feedback, and an opportunity to learn and lower anxiety.”
