Pablo The New York Tornado Speaks In The NY Times

THE storm struck New York last week. The New York Times reacted with a spot of a pros Adrian Mole would have considered it too flowery.

Tim Blair spots it and writes on the Tree-Mageddon. It wasn’t the arboreal 9/11 – but the Times has 1,000 words to deliver so it might come close:

Some were more than a century old but still sturdy and doing their jobs.

Their “jobs”? In Obama’s America? Not likely.

Many others were young and willowy, just getting going. Some of them were inscrutable; no one truly knew them or how they got there. But others felt like old friends.

If your friends are covered in bark and have birds in them, sure. By the way, it’s nice that only some of NYC’s trees are inscrutable. I prefer an open, chatty tree myself.

The tragedy of the storm, which meteorologists said Friday included two tornadoes, was Aline Levakis, 30, from Mechanicsburg, Pa., the sole person to die, when a tree, as it happened, hit her car …

Kind of ruins the whole “kind, gentle trees” concept, but the Times barges on:

Every single time? That must have been fun. Still, it’s not as though there’s anything else in New York to talk about. Except maybe the child with a companion stick:

Reuben Slater had his own tree-loss story. He is 13 and lives in Park Slope. When he walks to school, he passes a massive ash tree with a trunk that gives way to branches that form a V. When he was younger, he thought of it as the tree of life.

The storm carved off half the V. The tree is expected to survive, but to no longer resemble its old self. That saddens Reuben. He sees a tree “with a broken arm.”

He snatched a small branch off the ground. He said he would keep it in his room. “I’m going to name it Pablo,” he said. “I’ve always loved that name.”

Pablo doubles as a splint…

In Pictures: Queen Escapes 7/11 Carnage In New York

HER Majesty Queen Elizabeth II addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations at the UN Headquarters in New York, following an eight day tour of Canada. She’s avoided being caught up in the 7/11 tragedy that has befallen the Guardian.

Along with a smiling Duke of Edinburgh, Elizabeth met Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg at the British Garden at Hanover Square. She picked a few flowers and laid a wreath at the site of the World Trade Centre.

Then she settled Prince Harry’s bar tab, took a call from Prince Charles about whether or she’d offset her flight by taking shallower breaths and thought about heading home…

Thomas Prusik-Parkin ‘Posed’ As His Dead Mother to Claim Benefits

thomas-prusik-parkin-posed-as-his-dead-mother-to-claim-benefitsIN New York, Thomas Prusik-Parkin is arrested for impersonating his dead mother, Irene Prusik in order to claim her $115,000 in social security benefits and rent subsidies.

Mrs Irene Priski died in 2003. If Mr Thomas Prusik-Parkin was impersonating her, we marvel at how it took anyone six years to notice. For one thing, the smell must have been terrible. For another, with limbs falling off, how did he sign for anything?

Ian Tomlinson, New York New School Lies And Beating Up A Deaf Man

IAN Tomlinson’s death at G20 is not the only instance of police brutality.

Sure he was begging for it for wearing a Millwall top and treading on the cracks in the pavement, but he is not alone:

Gawker has this gem:

City Room finally posted this video from the New School protest that was crushed by the police earlier today. When you watch it, keep in mind that the NYPD’s spokesperson told the NYT it was “untrue that pepper spray or mace were used in effectuating the arrests.” Liar:

Menwhile in Texas:

It began with a routine traffic stop due to excessive speeding over one year ago.  The Deaf driver, Christopher Ferrell, attempted to retrieve his wallet to show the identification card regarding his deafness. The officer, J.A. Miller misinterpreted the actions for a person reaching for his gun and reacted aggressively. He grabbed the driver, swinging him around and smashed his face into the rear windshield, breaking his nose. The driver was then forced back to his seat.

The officer was disciplined with two days suspension without pay. He is currently appealing his decision.

There’s a video here.

The police are there not to protect the state. The police are there to serve the people…

In the quest to find the perfect middle school for her 10-year-old daughter, Aimée Margolis has zig-zagged across Manhattan for 11 school visits, grilled pre-teenagers at a school fair on music classes and the preferred attire at dances, and compiled a dog-eared folder full of notes.

Africa’s First Family: Obama Wins New York World Series

THE euphoria over the election of Barack Hussein Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America may have died down, but there remains a feeling – on the street, in people’s homes, in cafes and bars – that this momentous event is still percolating through society and will continue to do so for months, probably years, to come.

I live in a predominantly black neighborhood in Brooklyn, on the border of Crown Heights, where a race riot erupted in 1991, and Prospect Heights, a small, rapidly-gentrifying area where just a couple of generations ago few whites would consider living.

Spotting The Difference Between AIDS And Hipster Fashion In New York

HOW can you spot a genuine hipster from a non-genuine hipster, a square or an Aids victim?

Very tricky we know. But Lisa Pryor, writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, knows how.

Think hard. Is someone close to you at risk of being considered a hipster? An art student riding an old Malvern Star along Bourke Street while wearing skinny jeans, a khaki anorak and heavy-framed glasses with massive lenses could almost certainly be diagnosed as one.

Sounds like an AIDS victim. No?
