Behind Tebbitt's verbiage is an age old idea ie groom the youth into becoming cannon fodder to be sent abroad to fight Johnny Foreigner and bring back lots of booty for the ruling class. The fact that Tebbitt is saying this while there is a recruitment crisis in the British Army coupled with the ruling class's imperialist ambitions (Iraq, Afganistan, Iran etc etc) is no accident.

As usual the PC brigade have fired off at a perfectly good suggestion without reading what was actually said. Boys are different to girls in temperament and need a little excitment. I used the money from my paper round to go on the school skiing trip and to go on climbing and mountaineering expeditions. The thrill of participating in such activities meant that I couldn't see the interest some lads in my home city of Coventry had in picking fights on a Friday night. The biggest thugs were the ones who'd barely left the streets in which they had grown up.

Most of the guys in the air cadets (half of whom, in north Coventry, were from ethnic minorities) or army cadets went on to better things and I don't recall any getting into trouble with the police.

It saddens me to see so many young people wasting time on computer games when they should be falling out of trees or cycling to distant villages.
