Smoking Ban: Radioactive Cigarettes Are The New Chernobyl
THE smoking ban in England is coming into force. And the State can police it easily now that smokers glow in the dark:
If nothing else, this should worry smokers: the radiation dose from radium and polonium found naturally in tobacco can be a thousand times more than that from the caesium-137 taken up by the leaves from the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
Constantin Papastefanou from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece measured radioactivity in tobacco leaves from across the country and calculated the average radiation dose that would be received by people smoking 30 cigarettes a day. He found that the dose from natural radionuclides was 251 microsieverts a year, compared with 0.199 from Chernobyl fallout in the leaves (Radiation Protection Dosimetry, vol 123, p 68).

Poor Daniel’s grasp of the science is as good as his Grammar, here is an extract from a document from The Phillip Morris Company, one of the worlds largest tobacco growing companies explaining the connection of cigarettes to Polonium 210-pb
That phosphate fertilizer contains natural radioactivity is a well established fact. Natural uranium accumulates in the phosphate rock…Uranium and its daughters are thus carried through the mining and manufacturing process and appear in the commercial product [the fertilizer used on tobacco plants]. Soils to which these products are applied show an increase in radioactivity over that naturally present and this increase is a function of the rate of application and the number of years that the fertilizers have been used….Thus, the smaller particles [of the fertilizer] which would be more likely to be made airborne by normal farming practices, would be expected to settle out on the tobacco leaves during the growing season and/or be more readily taken up by the plant root system. 210-Pb [radioactive lead] and 210-Po [radioactive polonium] are present in tobacco and smoke….

Jules - The ‘amazing story’ came from ‘Constantin Papastefanou from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece’. Are you a journalist, or a scientist?
Unless you can prove Mr Papastefanou wrong, then you are not really in a position to say that this is lies.
Smoking does cause cancer and kill people. If this scares people into stopping smoking, then so what?
It’s not as though they are trying to scare us away from doing something healthy, good or useful.

I´ve never heard a such absourd before. They now made up all kind of lies and amazing stories about tobacco.
“Radioactive Cigarettes”??? Please. I think the press must to be more responsable and search the facts before publishing headlines like that above. It scares…
Where this information come from? It seems terrorism comparing Chernobyl nuclear accident, a horroble tragedy by the away, to smoking. It seems the nazi tact using in the second war.
I´m a journalist myself. In my opinion, this aproach have nothing to do with the fact that smoking seriously harms. Everybody knows that.
Please, let´s quit smoking but with the straight informations ok? No more amazing stories!!!
